The News
Nyjer Morgan will likely be suspended by Major League Baseball, according to Buster Olney of ESPN. Tulo playing Thursday
The News
Updating an earlier item, Troy Tulowitzki (groin) is in Colorado's Thursday evening lineup, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post. He will bat cleanup. Our View The Rockies appear to be playing with fire, as any worsening of Tulo's groin injury would almost certainly require a stint on the disabled list. With every game now a must win, however, they are willing to take that chance. |
|

|

The News
According to the Kansas City Star's Sam Mellinger, elite hitting prospect Mike Moustakas is unlikely to make his Royals debut before the middle of next summer. Our View Recently named Kansas City's minor-league hitter of the year, the club thinks he needs to work on his plate discipline just a little bit longer before earning a recall. However, if he has an impressive spring training or absolutely tears the cover off the ball in Triple-A next April, he could be called up before the 2011 calendar flips to June. |
|
09.02
Yankees:
A-Rod fires Boras
The News
Alex Rodriguez has fired long-time agent Scott Boras, according to NBC Sports. Our View Of course, Boras' work has already been done here, so to speak, as A-Rod has netted two separate 10-year contracts since 2000. His new agent, Pittsburgh attorney Jay Reisinger, should have considerably less to do and accomplish with A-Rod than Boras did. |
|

|
09.02
Rams:
Danny Amendola starting for Rams in preseason finale
The News
Danny Amendola will start for the Rams in their preseason finale Thursday, according to the team's Twitter page. Our View Amendola was bumped up to the No. 2 receiver role after starter Donnie Avery was lost for the season with a knee injury. Still, this doesn't guarantee that he'll hold onto the job. Brandon Gibson and rookie Mardy Gilyard both have a shot to wrest the job away before the regular season kicks off. |
|
09.02
Bills:
CJ Spiller held out of preseason finale
The News
The Bills will hold rookie running back C.J. Spiller out of the team's preseason finale for precautionary reasons, according to the Buffalo News. Our View Makes sense. With Fred Jackson (hand) likely to miss the regular season opener, there's no reason to take any chances with Buffalo's newest toy. Especially considering how impressive he's looked thus far. Spiller scored three times and totaled 16 yards over the first three preseason games. |
|
09.02
Buccaneers:
Josh Freeman (thumb) throws before preseason finale
The News
Josh Freeman (thumb) was spotted throwing passes prior to Tampa's preseason finale Thursday, according to the team's Twitter page. Our View Freeman won't play tonight, but he reportedly looked good throwing the ball, and that's a great sign for his week one status. The Bucs offense could surprise if sleeper running back Cadillac Williams and rookie receiver Mike Williams come through. Mike's been very impressive throughout the preseason. |
|
09.02
Lions:
Jahvid Best not playing in preseason finale
The News
The Lions are keeping rookie Jahvid Best out of the final preseason game as a precaution, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. Our View Best averaged an awesome 8.6 yards on 15 carries in his preseason work. He had some "tightness" in the third exhibition game, but it won't affect his week one status, and he still looks like the man in Detroit's backfield. |
|
09.02
Chargers:
Report: Seattle clearing room for Vincent Jackson
The News
According to Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Seahawks are apparently looking to trade TJ Houshmandzadeh in order to clear salary space for Vincent Jackson. Our View There's very little chance that the 'Hawks will find a willing trade partner for Housh and his $7 million guaranteed salary, but it's a nice idea. It seems like their best bet would be to release TJH and just pay him the money anyway. Of course, they'd still have to work out a deal for Jackson, and the Chargers have been stubborn. Stay tuned. |
|
09.02
Seahawks:
Seattle shopping Houshmandzadeh
The News
According to NFL.com's Jason La Canfora, the Seahawks are actively shopping veteran receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Our View Due to make over $7 million this season, however, his market should be extremely limited. Look for him to either remain in Seattle, or to get released. |
|
09.02
Redskins:
Johnson, Parker battling for roster spot
The News
According to the Redskins' official website, one of Larry Johnson and Willie Parker will most likely be cut this weekend. Further removed from his former greatness, Johnson is the more likely of the two to get cut. |
|
09.02
Raiders:
Raiders expected to release Colt Brennan
The News
Colt Brennan will most likely get cut by the Raiders this weekend, according to the Contra Costa Times. Our View The brash University of Hawaii record setter simply does not have a strong enough arm to stick in the NFL. This could be the end for him. |
|
09.02
Raiders:
Johnnie Lee Higgins may get cut
The News
According to the Contra Costa Times, Johnnie Lee Higgins is in danger of getting cut this weekend. Our View The owner of just 41 receptions the past two seasons, it's not as if he has a great pedigree to fall back on. Even with Chaz Schilens in injury limbo, Higgins seems likely to get cut. |
|
09.02
Bears:
Jay Cutler won't play Thursday
The News
Jay Cutler will not play in the Bears' final preseason game on Thursday evening, according to the Chicago Tribune. Our View It's customary for starters to skip the final game of the preseason, but considering how poorly Cutler has played this summer, he could likely use the extra reps. Heading into Chicago's Week 1 game against the Lions, he remains a mystery. |
|
09.02
Titans:
LeGarrette Blount may get cut
The News
According to the Nashville Tennessean, rookie running back LeGarrette Blount is not guaranteed a roster spot. Our View Competing with veterans Samkon Gado and Alvin Pearman, Blount is apparently hurt by his limited pass protection skills and lack of knowledge of the playbook. That being said, expect the Titans to end up going with his upside over Gado and Pearman's experience. |
|

Jets:
Revis' grandma unloads on Jets
The News
Searching for holdout cornerback Darrelle Revis in his hometown of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, ESPN's Rich Cimini got lengthy comments from his grandmother about his contract situation. "Darrelle does what he does because he loves it," she began. "For this to be happening to him, it's almost like a slap in the face, because he's not appreciated. I know he wants to play, but Darrelle understands contract negotiations. Some players don't get it, but Darrelle can read a contract. I think he's comfortable with his decision (to hold out) because he knows what he was told by the Jets and he knows what he's worth." She finished, "people are trying to portray him as greedy, but he has outperformed his contract. For them to put him in this position is just unreal." Our View The Jets' hardball strategy is clearly beginning to unravel, as it is widely believed they did not believe Revis would dig in this deep. Their chances of winning the AFC East without him are remote. |
|
09.02
Seahawks:
Whitehurst failing to impress
The News
According to Pro Football Talk, "there's a sense in Seattle that (back-up quarterback Charlie Whitehurst) isn't as good as advertised." Our View Acquired with much fanfare earlier this offseason, he failed to put any heat on incumbent Matt Hasselbeck, and has played extremely poorly since the first game of the preseason. Barring injury, he will not get on the field in 2010. |
|
09.02
Bengals:
Brian Leonard remains out indefinitely
The News
According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Brian Leonard could miss the first few weeks of the season as he continues to recover from a left foot injury. |
09.02
Cardinals:
Raiders not interested in Leinart
The News
According to the Denver Post, the Raiders have no interest in adding embattled Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart. Our View Happy with their trio of Jason Campbell, Bruce Gradkowski and Kyle Boller, they have little reason to pursue Leinart. Amazingly, Leinart could soon find himself in a similar situation to former Raiders signal-caller JaMarcus Russell: out of the league. |
|
09.02
Cowboys:
Crayton's roster spot in grave danger
The News
There is a good chance that receiver Patrick Crayton will be either released or traded by Saturday evening, according to ESPN's Tim MacMahon. Our View It seems odd that the Cowboys would release such a workmanlike receiver, especially since they could have done so at any point during the offseason, but they appear to be ready to move on. With many teams having a need at wideout, he should have little trouble finding a new club should be cut loose. |
|
09.02
49ers:
Ginn in no danger of being cut
The News
Ted Ginn will be a part of the 49ers' final 53-man roster this weekend, according to CSN's Matt Maiocco. Our View Not only has the disappointing Ginn locked up a roster spot, but apparently San Francisco's number three receiving job. You could do worse picking a late-round dark-horse receiver in deeper PPR leagues. |
|
09.02
49ers:
Nate Davis set to make 49ers
The News
According to CSN's Matt Maiocco, quarterback Nate Davis is expected to survive the 49ers' final round of cuts this weekend. Our View As has been expected all along. If Alex Smith again struggles this year, Davis could get some late season starts. |
|
09.02
Rams:
Darby, Ogbonnaya on the bubble
The News
Running backs Kenneth Darby, Chris Ogbonnaya and Keith Toston are all candidates for release this weekend, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Our View None of the three have established themselves as Steven Jackson's primary back-up this preseason, meaning St. Louis could decide to just go with the youngest and cheapest option. For the moment, Ogbonnaya seems like the least likely to get released. |
|
09.02
Rams:
Daniel Fells on roster bubble
The News
Tight end Daniel Fells is on the Rams' roster bubble, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Our View After reeling in 21 balls for 273 yards and three touchdowns last season, he signed one-year, $1.5 million deal this offseason. However, Michael Hoomanawanui has looked very impressive this summer, potentially making Fells expendable for the Rams. Stay tuned. |
|
09.02
Bills:
Florence becomes NFL's latest unfortunate tweeter
The News
According to Pro Football Talk, Bills cornerback Drayton Florence appeared to tweet that he had just finished smoking marijuana on Thursday morning. "Wake and bake great day to be great," was his exact tweet. Our View It was a similar tweet, of course, that first landed then-Steelers receiver Santonio Holmes in hot water last offseason. It's bad enough that Florence appears to be smoking marijuana as the Bills begin their final preparations for the regular season, but it is even worse that he has so little common sense as to tweet about his transgression. Expect him to hear from commissioner Roger Goodell in short order. |
|
09.02
Cardinals:
Cards ready to unload Leinart
The News
According to the Arizona Republic, Matt Leinart could be traded or released by Saturday. Our View The club is apparently still considering keeping him as Derek Anderson's back-up. What they are no longer considering is naming him the starter, however. What little fantasy value he had is now completely gone. |
|
09.02
Redskins:
Devin Thomas on roster bubble
The News
According to the Washington Examiner, "Redskins receiver Devin Thomas is definitely on the bubble." Our View His possible release shows just unproven and untalented Washington's receiving corps really is. He's worth nothing more than a late-round flier in PPR leagues. |
|
09.02
Jets:
Holmes can workout at Meadowlands
The News
According to the New York Post, Santonio Holmes will be allowed to workout at the Jets' practice facility during his four-game suspension to begin the season. Our View Good news for the Jets, if not necessarily good news for fairness. If you can snag him in the middle rounds of your draft, he could prove to be a huge mid-season reinforcement at receiver. |
|
09.02
Jets:
Cromartie's hip injury not serious
The News
According to the New York Post, Antonio Cromartie's right hip injury is not serious. Our View He was limited in practice on Tuesday, but head coach Rex Ryan insists the injury is minor. In 2008, Cromartie fractured his right hip. |
|
09.02
Thunder:
Hawks sign Etan Thomas
The News

|
09.01
Celtics:
Delonte West signed by Celtics
The News
According to the Associated Press, the Celtics have signed guard Delonte West. Our View West had a career-high 12.3 points per game the last time he was in Boston in 2006-07, but he'll struggle to make that kind of impact this time around. Plus, he's suspended for the first 10 games of the season. |
|
08.31
Grizzlies:
Darius Miles working out for Spurs
The News
Veteran small forward Darius Miles is expected to work out for the Spurs later this week, according to Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News. Our View Multiple microfracture surgeries have crippled Miles' career, and he'll be lucky to earn a spot with San Antonio. The Bobcats have already passed on him, and the most impressive thing he's done lately was appear in Van Wilder. |
|
08.31
Cavaliers:
Williams to be focus of offense
The News
The Akron Beacon-Journal reports that Byron Scott expects Mo Williams to be a focus of the offense this season, as he was in his final years with the Bucks. Our View Williams was a strong fantasy option as he averaged more than 17 points and six assists in his last two seasons in Milwaukee. He'll dominate the ball more often with LeBron James out of the lineup, and while his three-pointers may decline, we expect the rest of his numbers to climb. |
|
08.31
Nuggets:
Kings pursuing Carmelo
The News
The Sacramento Bee reports that trade discussions between the Nuggets and Kings regarding Carmelo Anthony are ongoing. Our View The Kings have nearly $20 million dollar in cap room and plenty of expendable assets. Samuel Dalembert would be quality insurance for the Nuggets and he holds a $12.2 million expiring contract. The Nuggets could also offer one of Jason Thompson or Carl Landry, as well as one of Francisco Garcia, Donte Greene, or Omri Casspi. |
|
08.31
Rockets:
Yao to be limited this season
The News
The Sporting News reports that Rockets GM Daryl Morey said that Yao Ming will have his minutes limited this season and could also sit out portions of back-to-back games on the schedule. Our View Really no big surprise here. The signing of Brad Miller indicated that Ming would be heavily limited, particularly in the first half of the season. We wouldn't expect him to log 30 minutes in a game much before the playoffs. Before he injured his foot, he was in the top fantasy center conversation, but he's not outside of the top 10. |
|
08.31
Knicks:
Turiaf to start for Knicks?
The News
Alan Hahn of Newsday tweets that the Knicks will probably start Ronny Turiaf at center this season. Our View This provides a big boost to Turiaf's value if it proves true. As a starter, he could be a top-five shot blocker. He's also a high field goal percentage player he can make a positive impact on rebounds, steals, and assists as well. Consider him a nice sleeper. This negatively affects the value of Anthony Randolph, as he would likely be moved to the bench. |
|
08.30
Suns:
Suns bring back big man Dwayne Jones
The News
The Suns signed Dwayne Jones Monday, according to the Arizona Republic. Our View Jones was shipped to Toronto earlier this year as part of the Leandro Barbosa trade, but he hit waivers pretty quickly. He's now back in Phoenix, though he's not a threat to earn significant, if any, minutes this season. |
|
08.30
Heat:
Heat sign Da'Sean Butler
The News
The Heat signed rookie second-rounder Da'Sean Butler Monday, according to the Associated Press. Our View The rookie forward tore his ACL in the Final Four earlier this year, and he would have been a higher pick otherwise. He's not expected to make a large impact in Miami as a rookie, especially playing behind this roster as he recovers from the injury. |
|
08.29
Pistons:
Pistons hoping T-Mac is at 85-90 percent health for training camp
The News
The Pistons are hoping that Tracy McGrady is at 85-to-90 percent health by the start of training camp, according to the Detroit Free Press. Our View The Pistons will probably take it easy on T-Mac in training camp with hopes for him to be at 100 percent health by the time the season starts. We wouldn't hold our breath. |
|
08.28
Hawks:
Crawford demands contract extension
The News
Jamal Crawford has told the Hawks that he wants to be traded if they don't offer him a contract extension, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Our View We'll have to wait and see what the Hawks' organization thinks of this. Crawford has one year left on his current contract. |
|
08.27
Knicks:
Knicks sign Ewing Jr.
The News
Patrick Ewing Jr. has been signed by the New York Knicks, according to Frank Isola of the New York Daily News. Our View A 26-year-old second round draft pick from 2008, Ewing has never before appeared in an NBA game. However, he looks to have a good shot at being the Knicks' 15th man this season. He should average less than five minutes per game. |
|
08.27
Kings:
Tyreke Evans suspended
The News
Tyreke Evans has been suspended for the first game of the 2010-11 season after being charged with reckless driving earlier this month, according to Yahoo! Sports. |
08.27
Pacers:
Report: Brandon Rush suspended
The News
According to Yahoo! Sports, Brandon Rush has been suspended five games for violating the NBA's drug policy. Our View The two-year veteran averaged 9.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per game for the Pacers last season. Already not much of a fantasy option, this isn't likely to increase his minutes in Indiana this season. |
|
08.26
Nuggets:
Could Nuggets be looking to deal Carmelo?
The News
The Nuggets may opt to trade Carmelo Anthony some time this season, according to Yahoo! Sports. Our View It's starting to become clear that Anthony does not see a future in Denver, and he's set to become a free agent after the 2010-11 season. He's indicated that he'd like to land with the Knicks, though they don't have a realistic and enticing-enough trade package that they'd be able to offer Denver. Team's in contention could be the Nets, Clippers, Warriors, Rockets or Bobcats. |
|
08.25
Clippers:
Del Negro expects Blake Griffin (knee) to play in opener
The News
Coach Vinny Del Negro said that he expects Blake Griffin (knee) to be ready for opening night, according to the Sporting News. Our View He also added that he'll start Griffin at power forward. Del Negro wants to "slow to him down and stick with the plan" even though Griffin is chomping at the bit to get back out there. There's plenty of time for him to heal, but it's a situation to watch closely. |
|
08.25
Spurs:
Danny Ferry to return to Spurs front office
The News
The Spurs have reportedly reached an agreement with Danny Ferry to return to their front office, according to Yahoo's Adrian Wojnarowski. He has a great relationship with the Spurs and will become their director of basketball operations. |
|
08.24
Rockets:
Yao's foot has fully healed
The News
According to Jason Friedman of NBA.com, the hairline fracture in Yao Ming's surgically-repaired foot has fully healed. Our View He worked out in front of media on Tuesday, and the reports were positive surrounding his one-on-one skills. Yao called his chances of playing opening night "pretty good," but he mentioned that he has a lot of work to do in the conditioning department. Still, he has plenty of time to correct that problem before the season begins. |
|
08.24
Jazz:
Mehmet Okur (Achilles) may not be ready for opener
The News
Mehmet Okur (Achilles) is rehabbing hard, but he still may not be ready for the season opener, according to David Locke of NBA.com. Our View The Jazz will really lean on Al Jefferson until Okur gets back, which may not happen for a while. Locke speculates that the real question may be about Okur's ability to play to his potential not his unknown return date. |
|
08.24
Celtics:
Rondo cut from Team U.S.A.
The News
Rajon Rondo was an unexpected cut from Team U.S.A.'s roster on Tuesday, according to Pete Thamel of the New York Times. Our View A bizarre, bizarre move considering that besides maybe Chris Paul and Deron Williams, Rondo is the best point guard the United States of America has to offer. A selfless player, he would have been great on a team full of egos. |
|
08.24
Bobcats:
Bobcats will waive Dampier
The News
The Charlotte Observer confirms that the Bobcats are expected to waive Erick Dampier and his non-guaranteed $13 million contract before training camp. The move would get the team comfortably under the luxury tax. Our View The Bobcats would probably like to trade his instant cap relief for a future draft pick and they may still be shipping him. Dampier has said that he would be open to re-signing with the 'Cats if they do waive him, and it would be a nice landing spot for what little is left of his fantasy value. Nazr Mohammed is atop the center depth chart, and Dampier may be considered an upgrade. |
|
08.23
NBA:
Hornets sign guard Shakur
The News
The Hornets signed guard Mustafa Shakur to a partially guaranteed contract, according to Jordan Reid of the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Our View Shakur will compete for a roster spot during camp. |
08.23
Bobcats:
Brown signs one-year deal with Charlotte
The News

A player who misses his pro-am obligation in its entirety will still be ruled ineligible for the tournament unless he has been excused in accordance with the provisions of the regulations." Our View Jim Furyk was disqualified last week due to this rule, missing the first stage of the FedExCup Playoffs at The Barclays, and while he is still in the hunt many golfers came to Furyk's defense and ripped the Tour's decision to DQ the guy. Steve Stricker and Kevin Streelman tied for third. Kuchar has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2010 and a push to win this year's FedExCup would surprise no one. He doesn't have a ton of FedExCup experience but he's enjoyed consistent play throughout the schedule, no matter the venue. |

Laird moves out front at The Barclays
The News
With all eyes officially falling off Tiger, Martin Laird has seized the spotlight at The Barclays, carding a round of 65 (-6) on Saturday to move into sole possession of the lead at 12 strokes under par (201) heading into the final day, according to the Associated Press. Laird owns a three-stroke lead over Dustin Johnson and Jason Day at the Ridgewood Country Club. Our View A win for Laird (or any of these golfers) would push him to #1 on the FedExCup point standings and would automatically make Laird a serious contender for the $10 million prize. Adam Scott is four strokes behind the lead at eight strokes under par with a strong group - including Justin Rose, Ryan Palmer, Matt Kuchar, John Senden, Vaughn Taylor, and Kevin Streelman - one stroke further back. Ian Poulter, Rickie Fowler, Steve Stricker, Angel Cabrera, Charlie Wi, Paul Casey, and Padraig Harrington are also in striking distance. It should be an exciting Sunday for the final round. |

After shooting his best round of the year to open The Barclays with the lead, Tiger Woods has fallen well off the pace, shooting 72 (+1) on Saturday to fall to three strokes under par (210) for the tourney, sitting nine strokes off the lead, according to the Associated Press. Our View Woods started with an odd 3-wood drive off the tee on Hole 1 that sent over trees and off golf property at the Ridgewood Country Club, leading to a triple bogey. Tiger failed to get those strokes back and needed back-to-back birdies on the final holes to get to 72. He entered the tourney ranked 112th on the FedExCup point standings and will need a strong Sunday to get up on the leaderboard and in the top 100 that make the field for the Deutsche Bank Championship. |

Our View Oliver Wilson, Simon Dyson (seeking a push to make the European Ryder Cup team), Gregory Bourdy, Julien Guerrier and Stephen Gallacher are all one stroke back of Edoardo who has not qualified for an automatic spot on the Ryder Cup team, unlike brother Francesco. Colin Montgomery will make two captain's picks on Sunday with plenty of choices, including Justin Rose, Padraig Harrington, Luke Donald and Paul Casey all in the mix. |

The News
With all eyes on Tiger Woods it was young Australian duffer Jason Day seizing today's spotlight at The Barclays, the first of four stages for the FedExCup Playoffs, carding a round of 67 (-4) to grab a one-stroke lead at eight strokes under par after two days of work, according to the Associated Press. Day tops Kevin Streelman and Vaughn Taylor, both sitting just one stroke back. Our View Day is enjoying a breakthrough campaign in 2010 and he continues to impress despite suffering from a substantial sinus infection that doctors fear may require surgery. He's playing through and doesn't seem too bothered by the problems, but we stil have two full days of golf with plenty of top names well within reach of the top of the leaderboard. Stewart Cink followed his 67 on Thursday with a round of 69 today, sitting at six strokes under par with Martin Laird and John Senden. Adam Scott, Ben Crane, Padraig Harrington, Matt Kuchar, and Tim Petrovic are al in the top 10 as well as we head into the weekend. It should be fun to watch it unfold. |

He wasn't the story of the day but he continues to hoard the spotlight as Tiger Woods, coming off his best round this season on Thursday, surged early only to fall flat late and finish at 73 today, falling to four strokes under par for The Barclays, according to the Associated Press. Our View Tiger was looking as strong on the front nine as he had all through his opening round on Thursday only to find four bogeys on the back nine and fall four strokes back of the leaders. Two short and disturbing missed putts really tested Tiger's patience, resulting in two of those bogeys. Otherwise he was still rather formidable and positive in working the links today, missing only two fairways at Ridgewood in a round in which he failed to use his driver one time. Meanwhile Phil Mickelson, the only man capable of reaching Tiger and removing him from the top spot on the Official World Golf Rankings, has missed the cut. With Lee Westwood out with injury it means Tiger will not only stay on top but he is likely to build on his current lead. |

Simon Dyson, needing a top finish to push forward in the Ryder Cup point standings for the European team, shot 70 and is tied for seventh place at six strokes under par. He shares that spot with Paul McGinley, Miguel Angel Jimenez, and Edoardo Molinari. |

Tiger enjoys positive start, shared lead at The Barclays
The News
Millions of golf fans got what they've been waiting for today as Tiger Woods, fresh off news that his divorce is final, fired a round of 65 (-6) to grab a share of the lead after the first day of competition at The Barclays, the first of four stages for the FedExCup Playoffs, according to the Associated Press. Woods shares the top spot on the board with Vaughn Taylor. They lead Adam Scott, Brian Gay, and Ryan Palmer by one stroke. Our View Woods and Taylor were blessed to share early AM tee times as the greens were a bit soft, smooth, and without damage from the wind. Reports indicate the afternoon wind was especially gusty and may have caused negative influence on those greens (evidenced by a bogey by Scott on the 18th that cost him a shot to share that lead). Woods was last at the top of a leaderboard on November 15th of last year at the Australian Masters, about two weeks before he planted his car into a fire hydrant without shoes on. We all know where the story went from there. Ranked 112th in FedExCup points coming into Stage 1, Tiger needs to stay near the top to insure he advances to the Deutsche Bank Championship. |

F.Molinari punches Ryder Cup ticket for Euro squad
The News
Francesco Molinari has secured a spot on the European Ryder Cup team, thanks to today's withdrawal by Ross McGowan from the Johnnie Walker Championship, according to the Associated Press. Our View McGowan reportedly walked out on the event after posting a horrific round of 77 (+5) at Gleneagles. Rumors suggest McGowan has been playing with undeniable pain caused by a pinched nerve in his shoulder. McGowan would need a first or second-place finish at the Johnnie Walker Championship to have a shot at a guaranteed spot on the Ryder Cup roster, and with the bad start and an apparent need to heal, he bowed out. That gives the spot to Molinari. |

Finch grabs early lead at Johnnie Walker Championship
The News
Richard Finch carded a round of 66 (-6) today to take the early lead at the Johnnie Walker Championship in Scotland, according to the Associated Press. Our View Finch hasn't won on the Euro Tour in two years, but he's being chased by a strong group that includes Robert Rock, Richard Bland, Gary Boyd, and David Lynne, all one stroke off the pace. Simon Dyson is four strokes under par as he seeks the ninth and final automated spot on the Euro Ryder Cup team. He stands in 13th place on the points list today. |

Tiger admits divorce has affected his play
The News
Tiger Woods stepped into the press tent today to speak with reporters, and for the first time this season, he spoke somewhat candidly about his personal life and the struggles he has endured in working as a professional golfer during his recent divorce, according to Mike Walker with Golf.com. "I wish her the best in everything," Woods said after finishing his pro-am round at the Barclays tournament in Paramus, N.J. "You know, it's a sad time in our lives. And we're looking forward to - in our lives and how we can help our kids the best way we possibly can. And that's the most important thing." Our View Elin Nordegren granted a lengthy interview to People Magazine who will feature the divorce on their upcoming cover, and it seems both sides of the split are taking this opportunity to speak on their feelings and reflections on recent events. Woods is ranked 112th in total FedExCup points coming into The Barclays and he'll need rapid improvement to stay in the playoff. He seems to be moving forward and his focus is as strong as we've seen this season. We'll see if he can pull it off at Ridgewood this week. |

Furyk disqualified from The Barclays
The News
Jim Furyk has been officially disqualified from this week's opening stage of the FedExCup Playoffs at The Barclays, according to the Mike Walker of Golf.com.. Our View Furyk overslept and missed his tee time for the pro-am event on Wednesday morning, and new rules instated by the Tour (meant to encourage all golfers to take part in this events for sponsors) issues automatic disqualification for such "offense." Multiple golfers spoke out in defense of Furyk, including Phil Mickelson who was animated in noting (a) only half of the weekly field gets invited to the pro-ams, thus only half of the field is subject to the rule, and (b) the penalty is too steep for such a minor offense, and while he understands the motivations of the Tour, the golfer shouldn't be punished so severely for such a minor offense. |

Tiger continues work with Foley at The Barclays
The News
Practice rounds and this week's pro-am took place at Ridgewood today and Tiger Woods, as anticipated, was working with coach Sean Foley in preparation for The Barclays, according to Charlie Hanger with Golf.com. "I worked with Sean two times at home," Woods said. "We worked on the same stuff that we worked on at the PGA. And it's just a matter of getting it more solidified." Our View It shouldn't be news but folks want to see Woods improve, and this is one definitive observation that suggests he might. Getting his game in focus and putting in work with an objective instructor should give Tiger his best shot at quick improvement on a course he has not played too often. Tiger comes in needing a surge to continue on in the playoff. We'll see if his efforts with Foley pay off. |

Hanson hopes to secure Ryder Cup spot at Johnnie Walker Championship
The News
Last week we reported on Peter Hanson, his rise to victory at the Czech Open, and his public desire to secure a spot on the European Ryder Cup team. The win last week put him in great position to earn that honor and this week, at the Johnnie Walker Championship in Gleneagles, Scotland, Hanson is working hard to achieve that goal, according to the Associated Press. Our View Hanson enters this week's Euro stop ranked eighth on the Ryder Cup points list. The top nine earn automatic spots on the roster. This week's event is the final in which European golfers can earn Ryder Cup points and there are several quality golfers chasing those final spots, including Miguel Angel Jimenez, Ross McGowan, and Simon Dyson. All are playing this week. |

Weir suffering from partially torn elbow ligament
The News
Mike Weir has reported he is suffering from a partially torn ligament in his right elbow and he will likely take the rest of the PGA season off to let that injury heal, accoring to the Associated Press. Weir revealed to members of the Canandian Press that an MRI exam over the weekend revealed the injury and that he hopes the injury will heal without surgery. Our View Weir had reportedly believed he was suffering from tendinitis as he complained about elbow pain during practice rounds for the Open Championship in July. Weir told reporters a conversation held between he and Scott McCarron while playing together at the Wyndham Championship prompted him to seek medical attention, thus revealing the injury. He wasn't serving fantasy owners well playing with the pain, suffering through one of his worst seasons in recent memory. The time off will do him well and we'll look forward to his return in 2011. |

Tiger, Elin make divorce final
The News
Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren have finalized their divorce, releasing a joint statement via Tiger's website, according to Golf.com. "Elin Nordegren and Tiger Woods confirmed today that they have divorced. Judgment was entered today in Bay County (Florida) Circuit Court dissolving the marriage. The Judgment provides for shared parenting of their two children," the statements says. "We are sad that our marriage is over and we wish each other the very best for the future. While we are no longer married, we are the parents of two wonderful children and their happiness has been, and will always be, of paramount importance to both of us. Once we came to the decision that our marriage was at an end, the primary focus of our amicable discussions has been to ensure their future well-being. The weeks and months ahead will not be easy for them as we adjust to a new family situation, which is why our privacy must be a principal concern." Our View That's that. Woods and Elin were married in October of 2004 and their relationship, as well as Tiger's golf game, came crashing down following a series of incidents taking place on Thanksgiving night of 2009 that led to revelations of rampant infidelity. Financial terms of the agreement were not made public. Elin is asking for her maiden name back and she has worked hard to stay out of the public light since the events of that night took place. |

Will Tiger take on controversial swing system?
The News
Tiger Woods made headlines for his life off the course today but a hot new rumor has those of us worried about his game on the links rather intrigued. A new article from Bill Pennington this morning notes Sean Foley, generally recognized as the new swing coach for Tiger, is a proponent of a controversial swing system known as the Stack and Tilt and some wonder if Tiger won't be steered in that direction, according to the New York Times. Our View According to Alan Bastable with Golf.com (Sports Illustrated) no swing system has stoked more controversy than the Stack and Tilt. Made famous by instructors Andy Plummer and Mike Bennett, the S&T is built on the design of shifting your weight on the front foot with the spine tilted toward the ball's target, rather than leaving your weight back as you begin the backswing. You can bet Tiger will be getting more attention in practice rounds this week as reporters clamor to see if the rumors prove true. We'll keep you posted. |

Goydos withdraws from The Barclays
The News
In combing through the published field for this week's trip to The Barclays, the first of four events serving as the playoff venues for the FedEx Cup Playoffs, we note Paul Goydos has been removed and has likely filed for early withdrawal, according to PGATour.com. Our View The Tour, as usual, fails to note the withdrawal or provide reason why he has left (and Goydos isn't one for Twitter). If we get one we will share. Ranked 63rd in FedEx points heading into Stage 1, Goydos is likey to advance to Stage 2 at the Deutsche Bank Championship, thus it is not a great surprise. |

Atwal breaks a few barriers with win at Wyndham Championship
The News
For the first time in 24 years, a golfer earning entry to a PGA Tour event via local Monday qualifier has emerged victorious as Arjun Atwal fired a grinding round of 67 (-3) today to secure a one-stroke win at the Wyndham Championship, according to the Associated Press. Atwal found the travel on Sunday tough as a large group of accomplished PGA professionals surged to join the fight, but he sank a tough six-foot putt on the 18th green to make par and secure the win at 20 strokes under par (260). Our View Atwal is the first Indian-born golfer to win a PGA Tour event. He had lost his Tour card due to struggles in play over recent seasons and was playing without inhibition as a result. David Toms took sole possession of second place at 19 under while John Mallinger, Michael Sim, John Rollins, and Justin Leonard tied for third at 18 strokes under par. |

Hanson pulls through 3-man playoff at Czech Open
The News
Peter Hanson pulled victory through a tough fight, including a three-way playoff with Gary Boyd and Peter Lawrie, at the Czech Open, according to the Associated Press. Hanson won the event on an 18-foot birdie putt on the second hole of the playoff after touting a four-stroke lead coming into the final day. He carded a round of 74 (+2) to finish at 10 under par for the tourney (278) at the Prosper Golf Resort. Our View The Europeans have one more week to compile Ryder Cup points and this win puts Hanson on the positive path to an automatic invite. He is now ranked ninth on the Euro list and should be in good standing with captain Colin Montgomerie in hopes of getting a spot on the roster. |

Atwal continues to sit in front at the Wyndham Championship
The News
Arjun Atwal has been in front from the get go and he continues to hold the lead at the Wyndham Championship, today carding a round of 65 (-5) to move to 17 strokes under par, good for a three-stroke advantage over the field, according to the Associated Press. Our View We've seen several golfers this season taking three-days worth of leads only to collapse on Sunday so we'll see what the fates brings. Atwal is being chased by Scott McCarron who shot 63 today as well as Scott Piercy (64), Lucas Glover (67), Will MacKenzie (65), Garrett Willis (65), David Toms (65), Justin Leonard (66), John Rollins (68), and Brandt Snedeker (69). Kevin Na (on our list of players to start for the week) matched the course record on Saturday shooting 61, now sitting at 12 under par. |
