The Mets are apparently close to signing first baseman Mike Jacobs to a minor-league contract, according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.

That should probably read "first baseman" because of Jacobs' defensive deficiencies. The Mariners outrighted right-hander Yusmeiro Petit to Triple-A Tacoma after he was designated for assignment last week.

Our View
Petit was claimed off waivers from the Diamondbacks this offseason and he'll likely join the M's Triple-A rotation. According to FOXsports.com, the Orioles have shown interest in free agent left-hander Jarrod Washburn.

Washburn was considering retirement, but would likely bypass that if he got a decent offer from the O's. They missed out on Erik Bedard and are still looking for a plug for the hole in their rotation, but Washburn's price would have to come down substantially for this to play out.
