Mets closing in on Mike Jacobs

      				The News
The Mets are apparently close to signing first baseman Mike Jacobs to a minor-league contract, according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.

Our View
That should probably read "first baseman" because of Jacobs' defensive deficiencies. While the Amazins would probably like us to believe he isn't seriously being considered for a roster spot, with the team's current first basemen being Fernando Tatis and Daniel Murphy, expect him to see a good deal of at-bats in 2010 if he signs.

Petit outrighted to Triple-A

      				The News
The Mariners outrighted right-hander Yusmeiro Petit to Triple-A Tacoma after he was designated for assignment last week.

Our View
Petit was claimed off waivers from the Diamondbacks this offseason and he'll likely join the M's Triple-A rotation. In parts of four seasons in the majors he has a 5.57 ERA, so he won't hod any fantasy value if he's called up, but he's only 24 so his future isn't necessarily bleak.

Hernandez outrighted to Triple-A

      				The News
The Mariners outrighted right-hander Gaby Hernandez to Triple-A Tacoma after he cleared waivers.

Our View
Hernandez was DFAed last week and went untouched on the waiver wire. He'll bring his 5.23 ERA in 146 1/3 innings from last year to the Triple-A rotation once again this season.

Mariners sign Speigner

      				The News
The Mariners signed right-hander Levale Speigner to a minor league contract.

Our View
The former National have been miserable at the big league level, posting a 9.19 ERA in 48 innings from 2007-08, but has been decent in the minors with a career 3.37 ERA. He will likely join the Mariners Triple-A rotation.

Amazins lower wall

      				The News
Citi Field's center field wall will be eight feet tall in 2010, according to New York Daily News. That's eight feet shorter than its height of 16 feet in 2009.

Our View
Maybe now David Wright will start hitting some home runs again. Seeing as the height-reduction is in center field, however, it shouldn't benefit him, or any other Mets hitter, a great deal.

Report: Nats a finalist for Wang

      				The News
According to Bill Ladson of MLB.com, the Nationals are a finalist for Chien-Ming Wang.

Our View
This would gibe with Washington's other aggressive moves this offseason. If they are willing to give Wang more money than anyone else, they just might land him. Stay tuned.

Braves waiting for Damon to get desperate

      				The News
The Braves remain a potential Johnny Damon landing spot, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View
Of course, they are reportedly waiting to see "just how desperate" Damon and his agent Scott Boras get before making a formal offer. This is likely the attitude of most teams eyeing Johnny Ballgame. Stay tuned.

Wang choosing between two teams?

      				The News
Chien-Ming Wang is reportedly mulling over offers from two clubs, and could sign sometime in the next week, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Our View
All we really know is that those two teams are not the Mets or Dodgers, who, despite both being interested in Wang, are "lagging behind." Wang will most likely have to begin the season on the disabled list.

Rox not eyeing Wellemeyer

      				The News
Despite recent speculation to the contrary, the Rockies are not interested in free agent righty Todd Wellemeyer, according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.

Our View
Wellemeyer supposedly has a minor league offer from the Giants currently on the table. After the way he stunk up the joint last season, it might be the best he can do.

Orioles eying Washburn

      				The News
According to FOXsports.com, the Orioles have shown interest in free agent left-hander Jarrod Washburn.

Our View
Washburn was considering retirement, but would likely bypass that if he got a decent offer from the O's. They missed out on Erik Bedard and are still looking for a plug for the hole in their rotation, but Washburn's price would have to come down substantially for this to play out. He could be a disaster in the AL East though, so the O's are better off looking for other, more affordable options.
