NEWSBREAKERS NFL
Eli Manning, QB, New York GiantsThursday 7/2, 9:22 PM CT
ESPN reports there is "no way" contract talks will become contentious between the New York Giants and franchise quarterback Eli Manning.

Our View: Eli is asking for a king's ransom, but the Giants are determined to keep the face of their franchise happy and will surely do so without a hitch.
Jared Cook, TE, Tennessee TitansThursday 7/2, 8:32 PM CT
Rookie tight end Jared Cook inked a four-year deal with the Titans, according to the Tennessean. He will earn $310,000 this season, $395,000 in 2010, $480,000 in 2011, and $565,000 in the final year of the contract.

Our View: Cook has turned heads in practice with fantastic catches, and the Titans intend to use his size (6-5, 246 pounds) and good athletic ability to create mismatches. He should register a blip on the fantasy radar as a rookie, but his playing time will be limited while stuck behind Bo Scaife and Alge Crumpler on the depth chart at tight end. He is worth targeting in keeper leagues.
Amani Toomer, WR, Kansas City ChiefsThursday 7/2, 7:15 PM CT
Amani Toomer is believed to be rated higher on the free agent market than Marvin Harrison, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Our View: Toomer is listed high on a few NFL teams' emergency list among free agent receivers. He should find work for the 2009 campaign, while there is belief that Harrison may be done and may not even want to resume his career as a reserve.
Chris Perry, RB, Cincinnati BengalsThursday 7/2, 5:49 PM CT
Police have issued a warrant for Chris Perry's arrest for failing to pay taxes to the City of Wyoming dating back to 2006 and 2007, according to WCPO.com. He was released by the Bengals back in April.

Our View: Perry was absent from his June 17 hearing. He will hold no fantasy value for 2009 while playing with Orlando of the UFL.
Phil Dawson, K, Cleveland BrownsThursday 7/2, 5:22 PM CT
Adam Schefter noted on his twitter page that he has been hearing whispers that Phil Dawson will not kick for the Browns in 2009.

Our View: Dawson covets a new contract, and there is belief he will not kick until he gets one. The Browns signed free agent kicker Parker Douglass earlier in the offseason for insurance.
Andrew Davie, TE, Carolina PanthersThursday 7/2, 5:13 PM CT
The Panthers claimed rookie tight end Andrew Davie off waivers from the New York Jets on Thursday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: "Rookie" isn't exactly the right word for Davie, as he is 26. But he has spent the last four years in the St. Louis Cardinals minor league baseball system, and not on a football field. He's probably a longshot to make the Panthers at this point, but a good story to keep an eye on.
Vontae Davis, CB, Miami DolphinsThursday 7/2, 4:04 PM CT
Charges against Vontae Davis have been dismissed, according to ProFootballTalk.com. John F. Murphy of the Champaign police department said, "We have dismissed the traffic ticket and ordinance violation issued in Vontae Davis' name. We are satisfied that he was not the individual we had contact with June 9, 2009."

Our View: It turned out to be a case of mistaken identity, as Davis initially stated. The Dolphins' cornerback can now concentrate on gearing up for his first season in the NFL.
Calvin Pace, LB, New York JetsThursday 7/2, 2:09 PM CT
According to Adam Schefter's Twitter account, Jets defensive end Calvin Pace has been suspended for four games.

Our View: No word yet on why he was suspended, as the announcement wasn't planned to be released until July 4th. Four games though is standard for violation of the league's banned substance policy.
Vernon Gholston, LB, New York JetsThursday 7/2, 12:52 PM CT
According to Adam Schefter's Twitter account, Vernon Gholston has not impressed in OTAs so far this offseason.

Our View: Gholston, the Jets' first-round pick in 2008, failed to make an impact last season as a rookie and isn't off to a great start in 2009. The team has said encouraging things about him, but observes of his practices tell a different tale. If anyone can get him going, it's Rex Ryan, but so far Gholston looks far from sharp.
Brandon Marshall, WR, Denver BroncosThursday 7/2, 12:48 PM CT
According to Adam Schefter's Twitter page, the Broncos are willing to listen to offers for troubled wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

Our View: The Broncos aren't shopping Marshall and won't actively make any calls involving him, but at this point they are willing to listen to deals. A first-round draft pick would certainly open their ears a bit wider.
Keith Null, QB, St. Louis RamsThursday 7/2, 11:19 AM CT
According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the Rams plan on giving rookie Keith Null multiple opportunities to earn the third-string quarterback job.

Our View: The Rams feel Null has a strong and accurate arm, but he'll have to prove himself in training camp, as he has yet to really "turn any heads".
Jason Smith, OT, St. Louis RamsThursday 7/2, 11:15 AM CT
According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, first-round draft pick Jason Smith is expected to start on opening day.

Our View: Smith is extremely talented, not to mention the fact that the Rams are paying him a bundle, so it doesn't make sense to sit him. He is slotted at right tackle, but may move around depending on his performance. He was the number-two overall pick in the draft and is expected to be a difference maker in St. Louis this season.
Terrelle Smith, RB, Detroit LionsThursday 7/2, 9:47 AM CT
According to MLive.com, Terrelle Smith may have a lock on the starting fullback job in Detroit.

Our View: Jerome Felton is in the mix as well, but it appears the team is leaning towards keeping both players. Smith, a 10-year NFL veteran, is an exceptional blocking fullback. He won't get many carries, but should be adept at clearing the way for running back Kevin Smith.
J.D. Folsom, LB, Miami DolphinsThursday 7/2, 9:43 AM CT
According to Scout.com, the Dolphins have signed line backer and seventh-round draft selection J.D. Folsom to a four-year contract.

Our View: The deal is worth $1.812 million and Folsom will receive a signing bonus of $62,000. He should challenge for a spot on the team during training camp.
