NEWSBREAKERS NFL
Julius Peppers, DE, Carolina PanthersTuesday 2/9, 6:06 PM CT
Claiming that the Panthers have "ignored" him this offseason, Julius Peppers says he will not sign a long-term contract with the organization, according to ESPN.

Our View: Meaning, the only way he'll be back in Carolina in 2010 is via the franchise tag. Seeing as that would call for a salary north of $20 million, consider it unlikely at best.
Donte Stallworth, WR, Cleveland BrownsTuesday 2/9, 5:28 PM CT
According to Pro Football Talk, Donte Stallworth is expected to work out for the Lions on Wednesday.

Our View: We don't have to tell you about the personal drama swirling around Stallworth, but it appears the Lions are desperate enough for a receiver to give him a look anyway. In 2008 with the Browns he had just 17 catches for 170 yards and a score in 11 games. It's not likely he has much left in the tank.
Jeff Webb, WR, Kansas City ChiefsTuesday 2/9, 5:01 PM CT
According to the National Football Post, the Ravens worked out former Chiefs receiver Jeff Webb last week.

Our View: Webb, 28, is a former sixth-round pick of the Chiefs and has caught 36 career passes for 382 yards and a score. The Ravens desperately need a receiver, but Webb certainly doesn't seem like the answer.
Steven Jackson, RB, St. Louis RamsTuesday 2/9, 5:00 PM CT
Due to a lack of evidence, Steven Jackson will not face charges for allegedly beating the mother of his child, Supriya Harris, last March, according to TMZ.

Our View: While this does not necessarily mean he is innocent, it is still good news for Jackson and his fans. This, coupled with the fact that Ms. Harris took over 10 months to come forward with her allegations, should leave his reputation relatively unharmed.
Brian Westbrook, RB, Philadelphia EaglesTuesday 2/9, 4:52 PM CT
Brian Westbrook isn't likely to retire this offseason, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View: In his own words, he is "just trying to enjoy this offseason and trying to get ready for this next upcoming season." With his lingering knee, ankle and head (concussion) problems, don't expect him to be a big fantasy contributor in 2010.
Nathan Vasher, CB, Chicago BearsTuesday 2/9, 4:43 PM CT
Due $2.95 million in 2010, Nathan Vasher will most likely be released, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: He finished up 2009 as barely a part-time contributor, and just isn't worth the money anymore. Perhaps a change of scenery will do him well, but for the moment, he won't be worth a look in IDP leagues next season.
Quinn Sypniewski, TE, Baltimore RavensTuesday 2/9, 4:42 PM CT
According to Aaron Wilson on Twitter, Ravens tight end Quinn Sypniewski underwent a minor followup surgery on his injured left knee.

Our View: Sypniewski has now had three surgeries since originally injuring the knee in 2008 training camp. He was a fine blocker before the injury, but was never an offensive or fantasy option. Now he'll struggle just to get a shot in next season's training camp.
Donte Stallworth, WR, Cleveland BrownsTuesday 2/9, 3:46 PM CT
Donte Stallworth's agent Drew Rosenhaus said that a number of teams have shown interest in his client and that Stallworth will work out for an undisclosed NFL team tomorrow, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Rosenhaus said he expects Stallworth to sign with someone over the next few weeks. While we've learned to take anything Rosenhaus says with a grain of salt, Stallworth is just 28 and apparently still in fine shape after being out of the league last season due to a suspension stemming from a DUI manslaughter conviction. It wouldn't be surprising to see a team in need of a deep threat give Stallworth a second chance.
DeDe Dorsey, RB, Detroit LionsTuesday 2/9, 2:19 PM CT
DeDe Dorsey claims to have signed a deal with Detroit, according to the Detroit News.

Our View: Dorsey is a smallish scatback with nice open-field moves, though unfortunately for him, Aaron Brown is pretty much the same thing. Dorsey will probably have to contribute on special teams if he wants a chance at opening the 2010 season on the Lions' roster.
Brandon London, WR, Pittsburgh SteelersTuesday 2/9, 11:49 AM CT
Brandon London has signed a futures contract with the Steelers, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: Pittsburgh signed punter Adam Graessle as well. Both will compete for roster spots heading into next season.
Greg Olsen, TE, Chicago BearsTuesday 2/9, 8:16 AM CT
New Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz suggested that Greg Olsen will be asked to block much more than he has in the past, according to Pro Football Talk. "All tight ends, their first responsibility, they have to put their hand down on the line of scrimmage and be a successful blocker, and then they move to receiving," Martz said. "To just skip by that and say, 'He's a terrific receiver,' well, then you might as well just put another wide receiver in there."

Our View: Martz's offenses have never been friendly to tight ends, and in fact no tight end has ever caught 40 balls in any of his offenses. Olsen led the Bears with 60 receptions and eight touchdowns last year, but it looks like there's no way he'll approach those numbers under the Martz regime. You have to wonder if the Bears will consider trading him, because there are plenty of teams that would be ecstatic at the potential to land a pass-catching tight end of Olsen's talent.
Devin Hester, WR, Chicago BearsTuesday 2/9, 8:11 AM CT
New Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz indicated that he plans to reduce Devin Hester role on offense slightly so that Hester can focus more on special teams, according to Pro Football Talk. "It would be very difficult for [Hester] to play every snap on offense and still play effectively on special teams," Martz said.

Our View: Martz said that he envisions playing Hester in the slot, the same spot that he used Az-Zahir Hakim in back in his heyday with the Rams. It's worth nothing that Hakim never caught more than 53 balls or reached 750 receiving yards, needless to say that Hester's fantasy value seems to have taken a hit.
