NEWSBREAKERS NBA
Trevor Ariza, F, Houston RocketsThursday 7/2, 9:16 PM CT
Trevor Ariza has signed with the Houston Rockets, according to the Houston Chronicle's Richard Justice.

Our View: Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Ariza's curious spurning of the Lakers appears to be mostly motivated by money, and he is now joining a team that will be without its three top players from 2008-09 for most of the season. He should not be an impact fantasy player.
Ron Artest, F, Los Angeles LakersThursday 7/2, 7:41 PM CT
Prized free agent forward Ron Artest has reached a verbal agreement with the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers for three years and $18 million, according to ESPN.com.

Our View: The rich just got richer with this deal. Artest is still one of the premier defenders in the NBA, and shores up a defense that has been classified as "soft" for some time now. This also all but ends any chance Houston had of competing in 2009-10.
Trevor Ariza, F, Houston RocketsThursday 7/2, 7:06 PM CT
Trevor Ariza visited the Rockets Thursday, according to OregonLive.com.

Our View: The Lakers are seemingly ready to let Ariza go, as they are reportedly close to a deal with Ron Artest. Ariza averaged 8.9 points over 24.4 minutes per game with Los Angeles in 2008-09.
Ron Artest, F, Los Angeles LakersThursday 7/2, 7:02 PM CT
Ron Artest is reportedly nearing a deal with the Lakers, according to OregonLive.com.

Our View: The 30-year-old vet is fond of the city of Los Angeles, and was seen courtside during the NBA Finals for some of the Lakers' games. He can still play at a high level and help the club defend their title, as he averaged 17.1 points last season.
Ben Gordon, G, Detroit PistonsThursday 7/2, 5:35 PM CT
Ben Gordon revealed on Thursday that the Bulls never made him an offer this offseason, according to Hoopsworld.com.

Our View: Gordon's departure likely means a bigger role once again for Kirk Hinrich in the Windy City, though the Bulls could still replace Gordon via trade or free agency.
Allen Iverson, G, Memphis GrizzliesThursday 7/2, 5:23 PM CT
The Miami Heat have interest in free agent guard Allen Iverson, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View: Despite Iverson's woeful (by his standards), and headache inducing 2008-09 season, he figures to be a hot commodity this summer. He would provide a nice scoring compliment to Dwayne Wade in Miami, provided he can play second fiddle, which is by no means a given.
Marcin Gortat, C, Orlando MagicThursday 7/2, 5:10 PM CT
Marcin Gortat is reportedly set to sign an offer sheet with the Mavericks next Wednesday, which the Magic will have seven days to match if they wish to keep him, according to ESPN.

Our View: Gortat is the apple of many teams' eyes this offseason, but the Mavs appear to be halfway toward landing him. The deal is rumored to be for five years at roughly $5.5 million a year in hopes of dissuading Orlando from matching it.
Ron Artest, F, Los Angeles LakersThursday 7/2, 4:13 PM CT
The Heat are reportedly interested in Ron Artest, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View: The club also has Allen Iverson on their radar, and would like to add at least one of them. When healthy and focused, Artest is among the top forwards in the NBA.
Sean Singletary, G, Philadelphia 76ersThursday 7/2, 3:41 PM CT
According to the Charlotte Observer, did not renew the team option on Sean Singletary. With that move he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Our View: Singletary wasn't activated for a game after February 11th, and was in a reserve roll to that point. He won't hold any fantasy value, even if he latches on with another team.
Marcin Gortat, C, Orlando MagicThursday 7/2, 3:36 PM CT
According to the Dallas Morning News, the Mavericks have reportedly made an offer to big man Marcin Gortat.

Our View: The Mavs have to now sit and wait to see if the Magic come back and match the offer. No word on how long or how much the contract is worth, but if this gets done it could help convince Jason Kidd to return.
Ricky Rubio, G, Minnesota TimberwolvesThursday 7/2, 2:00 PM CT
According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Ricky Rubio plans to remain in Spain and play out the remaining two years of his contract with DKV Joventut instead of joining the NBA.

Our View: This spells bad news for the T-Wolves. Rubio could obviously still change his mind, but right now he seems convinced. He's even dropped the contract lawsuit against DKV Joventut, according to the Barcelona newspaper El Periodico. Rubio made $97,000 last season.
Rasheed Wallace, C, Boston CelticsThursday 7/2, 1:55 PM CT
According to CelticsBlog.com, Boston is said to be willing to offer Rasheed Wallace the full $5.8 million mid-level exception, but are only willing to go as long as two years.

Our View: This is far from a done deal, but it does show genuine interest by the Celtics. Wallace is said to have other interested suitors as well, including San Antonio and Cleveland.
Josh Childress, F, Thursday 7/2, 11:51 AM CT
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Josh Childress is considering a return to the NBA. The restricted free agent is set to meet with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Our View: If Childress is going anywhere he's going to have to opt out of his current contract with Olympiakos in Greece. If the Bucks make him an offer below the $6 million dollar mark, the Hawks would likely match it and bring him back to Atlanta. Everything is up in the air at this point, but it's looking like Childress could wind up in the NBA again.
Ron Artest, F, Los Angeles LakersThursday 7/2, 11:45 AM CT
According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Cavaliers are making a push to sign free agents Ron Artest and Trevor Ariza.

Our View: LeBron James met with Artest on Tuesday night in LA and Ariza has shown interest since being unsatisfied with the Lakers' initial offer to him. The Cavs have already landed Shaq and could become an instant powerhouse if they can sign one of these two impact players. However, figuring out all the finances could be tricky.
David Lee, C, New York KnicksThursday 7/2, 10:23 AM CT
According to Hoopsworld.com, the Raptors are interested in free agent David Lee.

Our View: The Grizzlies were going hard after Lee, but ownership didn't want to pay up, so they settled for the less expensive Zach Randolph. Now the Raptors lead the charge for Lee, but the Tunder are said to be interested as well. If he doesn't get a big pay day from either of those suitors, expect him to return to the Knicks.
Ben Gordon, G, Detroit PistonsThursday 7/2, 10:19 AM CT
According to Hoopsworld.com, Ben Gordon stated that he expects to be the sixth man behind Rip Hamilton next season.

Our View: The Pistons think the two can play together (at least more effectively than Hamilton and Allen Iverson), but Hamilton may not want Gordon eating into his minutes and could demand a trade. Stay tuned for drama.
