NEWSBREAKERS MLB
Matt Holliday, LF, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 11/4, 7:43 PM CT
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that the Cardinals have opened contract talks with outfielder Matt Holliday. The team reportedly opened discussions with a six-year, $98 million deal.

Our View: These talks are just preliminary, but that doesn't appear to be nearly enough to lock Holliday up. Scott Boras has said he will use Mark Teixeira's eight-year, $180 million as a benchmark, so the Cards better get that offer increased if they want to keep the slugger.
Scott Proctor, P, Atlanta BravesWednesday 11/4, 7:23 PM CT
The Atlanta Braves have signed pitcher Scott Proctor to a one-year deal, according to TCPalm.com. Proctor was released by the Marlins in October after missing the entire season due to Tommy John surgery.

Our View: No word on the specific financial details of the deal, but it appears to be heavily based on incentives. The Braves were very interested in Proctor as soon as he became available, so expect him to contribute of of the bullpen next season.
John Halama, P, Atlanta BravesWednesday 11/4, 5:04 PM CT
The Jays will scout lefty hurler John Halama in the Dominican Republic Thursday, according to MLB reporter John Bastian's twitter page.

Our View: Halama has not pitched in the majors since 2006 (with Atlanta), and Bastian is uncertain how serious the Jays are about him.
Ted Lilly, P, Chicago CubsWednesday 11/4, 4:41 PM CT
Ted Lilly underwent shoulder surgery Tuesday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times' Chris De Luca. The team hopes he will be ready sometime "within the month of April".

Our View: Lilly had shoulder soreness late in the year, so this isn't terribly surprising, though there hadn't been any whispers that surgery might be needed. De Luca says you can count the lefty out for opening day and maybe the entire month. He also notes the team's previous bogus early forecasts for Mark Prior and Kerry Wood after they went under the knife. You would be wise to knock Lilly down on your 2010 cheat sheet.
Shane Victorino, CF, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 11/4, 4:21 PM CT
Shane Victorino is in the Phillies' lineup for Game 6 on Wednesday, according to the Twitter page of beat writer Todd Zolecki. X-Rays on his index finger were negative.

Our View: Victorino wasn't going to let a little finger injury keep him out of the World Series, so there was never really any doubt he would play tonight. The Phils have their full lineup in tact, and they are ready to try and take this series to Game 7.
Joe Thurston, 3B, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 11/4, 1:44 PM CT
The St. Louis Post Dispatch reports that the Cardinals have outrighted infielder Joe Thurston and reliever Matt Scherer to the Triple-A Memphis roster.

Our View: The Birds just wanted to clear space on the 40-man roster and had to do a little housecleaning. Thurston was a career minor leaguer who finally got a shot to get it done at the big league level last season, but he managed to hit just .225 in 267 at-bats with one homer and 25 RBI. Don't expect him to crack the roster again next year.
Brad Thompson, P, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 11/4, 1:39 PM CT
According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the Cardinals have released right-hander Brad Thompson.

Our View: The club is cleaning up it's 40-man roster and with Thompson arbitration eligible for the first time, it made sense for the team to let him go instead of retain him. In his Cardinal career he held a respectable 4.36 ERA in five seasons, but was mostly relegated to mop-up and meaningless spot-start duty the last two years. Expect another team to take a flyer on his as a starter, reliever or even swingman, but don't expect him to pay any fantasy dividends.
Tim Hudson, P, Atlanta BravesWednesday 11/4, 1:35 PM CT
According to the MLBlogs.com, Tim Hudson has passed his physical and essentially ensured that his three-year extension is now a done deal. The team will likely make an official announcement after the World Series.

Our View: The deal was hinged on the two parties finding a doctor that would clear Hudson and be approved by the insurance companies. Looks like they hit pay-dirt, especially in Hudson's case as he stands to make around $9 million a year for the next three years. The Braves seem confident that he has fully recovered from Tommy John, so he could be a nice sleeper pick next season.
Vicente Padilla, P, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 11/4, 8:13 AM CT
According to the LA Times, Dodgers starter Vicente Padilla was treated for a minor gunshot wound in a Nicaragua hospital on Tuesday.

Our View: The wound was apparently self-inflicted and Padilla's agent is calling it a "hunting accident". The pitcher was treated for 30-40 minutes after being rushed to the hospital and it appears the bullet just grazed his leg. Hopefully this doesn't turn out to be another "Plaxico situation" as the Dodgers were looking into resigning the revamped veteran next season.
