NEWSBREAKERS MLB
Scot Shields, P, Los Angeles AngelsMonday 2/8, 8:32 PM CT
Scot Shields, who has been recovering from June knee surgery, is not expected to be ready to throw off a mound at the start of spring training, according to ESPN.

Our View: Shields is not sure how quickly he will be ready to throw off a mound, and is taking things slow. He has confidence he will be ready to go by opening day though. Shields is among the Angels' most valuable relievers when healthy.
Todd Wellemeyer, P, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 2/8, 8:27 PM CT
The Giants have offered Todd Wellemeyer a minor league deal, according to the Mercury News.

Our View: Wellemeyer held a dismal 5.89 ERA and 1.77 WHIP over 122.1 innings (21 starts) with St. Louis in 2009, and the 31-year-old hurler is unlikely going to get a strong deal elsewhere.
Skip Schumaker, 2B, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 2/8, 7:03 PM CT
Skip Schumaker has agreed to a two-year deal with the Cardinals to avoid arbitration, according to team beat writer Matthew Leach's twitter page. It is believed to be worth $4.7MM.

Our View: Schumaker is batting .312 over his last three seasons in St. Louis, and scored 172 total runs over his last two. The 29-year-old middle infielder was worth retaining for another two years.
Kasey Olenberger, P, Florida MarlinsMonday 2/8, 6:56 PM CT
Kasey Olenberger has signed a minor league deal with the Marlins, according to the Sports Network.

Our View: The 31-year-old hurler is yet to appear in the majors, and was added merely as organizational depth for Florida.
Michael Brantley, CF, Cleveland IndiansMonday 2/8, 6:38 PM CT
Skipper Manny Acta believes that Michael Brantley is the top candidate for the starting gig in left field, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View: Brantley hit .313 over 112 at-bats with the Indians in 2009, and his fantasy stock looks to be on the rise for the upcoming campaign. Trevor Crowe and Austin Kearns will be the other outfielders competing for the No. 1 role in left.
Cliff Lee, P, Seattle MarinersMonday 2/8, 5:51 PM CT
Cliff Lee had surgery Friday to remove a floating spur in his left foot, according to Larry Stone's (Seattle Times) twitter page.

Our View: Lee is expected to resume normal baseball activities in around 2-3 weeks, and should remain a safe fantasy prospect for 2010.
Felipe Lopez, 2B, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 2/8, 5:40 PM CT
Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com states that the Indians are not interested in Felipe Lopez.

Our View: The Indians missed out on Orlando Hudson to the rival Twins, but apparently don't see Lopez as a worthy addition to help shore up their middle infield.
Braden Looper, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 2/8, 5:36 PM CT
Braden Looper reportedly won't settle for a minor league deal or a low base salary, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Our View: The Mets were among the teams believed to be interested in Looper. He is 35, and held an unimpressive 5.22 ERA and 1.49 WHIP over 34 starts with Milwaukee last season.
Vinny Rottino, C, Florida MarlinsMonday 2/8, 5:30 PM CT
Vinny Rottino has signed a minor league deal with the Marlins, according to TSN.

Our View: The 29-year-old first baseman is a career .208 hitter in the bigs. Rottino is not likely going to win a roster spot with Florida in spring training.
Marcus Thames, LF, New York YankeesMonday 2/8, 3:03 PM CT
The Yankees have signed Marcus Thames to a non-roster contract, according to Sports Illustrated.

Our View: Thames, who has decent power, would seem to have a pretty good chance of making New York's roster as a right-handed bat off the bench. He actually lands in a pretty good situation with the Yankees; of their three outfield spots and designated hitter gig, Curtis Granderson in center field is really the only sure thing as of now. Thames will compete for at-bats with the likes of Randy Winn, Brett Gardner, Nick Swisher and Nick Johnson.
