02.09  Yankees:  Report: Nats a finalist for Wang
The News
According to Bill Ladson of MLB.com, the Nationals are a finalist for Chien-Ming Wang.

Our View
This would gibe with Washington's other aggressive moves this offseason. If they are willing to give Wang more money than anyone else, they just might land him. Stay tuned.
02.09  Yankees:  Braves waiting for Damon to get desperate
The News
The Braves remain a potential Johnny Damon landing spot, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View
Of course, they are reportedly waiting to see "just how desperate" Damon and his agent Scott Boras get before making a formal offer. This is likely the attitude of most teams eyeing Johnny Ballgame. Stay tuned.
02.09  Yankees:  Wang choosing between two teams?
The News
Chien-Ming Wang is reportedly mulling over offers from two clubs, and could sign sometime in the next week, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Our View
All we really know is that those two teams are not the Mets or Dodgers, who, despite both being interested in Wang, are "lagging behind." Wang will most likely have to begin the season on the disabled list.
02.09  Cardinals:  Rox not eyeing Wellemeyer
The News
Despite recent speculation to the contrary, the Rockies are not interested in free agent righty Todd Wellemeyer, according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.

Our View
Wellemeyer supposedly has a minor league offer from the Giants currently on the table. After the way he stunk up the joint last season, it might be the best he can do.
02.09  Tigers:  Orioles eying Washburn
The News
According to FOXsports.com, the Orioles have shown interest in free agent left-hander Jarrod Washburn.

Our View
Washburn was considering retirement, but would likely bypass that if he got a decent offer from the O's. They missed out on Erik Bedard and are still looking for a plug for the hole in their rotation, but Washburn's price would have to come down substantially for this to play out. He could be a disaster in the AL East though, so the O's are better off looking for other, more affordable options.
02.09  Mets:  Egbert designated for assignment
The News
Jack Egbert has been designated for assignment.

Our View
In 2.2 innings for the White Sox last season, the only 2.2 innings of his major league career, Egbert allowed eight earned runs.
02.09  Mets:  Pridie claimed off waivers by Mets
The News
The Mets have claimed Jason Pridie off waivers from the Twins, according to USA Today.

Our View
Pridie logged a measly four at-bats the past two years with Minnesota and will look to crack the Mets' roster as a reserve.
02.09  Twins:  Jones reunites with the Twins
The News
Jacque Jones has signed a minor league deal with the Twins, according to ESPN.com.

Our View
Jones opened his career in Minnesota and had his best years there, most notably 2002 when he hit .300 with 27 home runs. Unfortunately, Jones has seen his production rapidly decline the past few years and didn't log a single major-league at-bat last season, though he'll have a chance to make the Twins' roster as a left-handed bat with some pop off the bench.
02.09  Brewers:  Brewers and Schoeneweis agree on contract
The News
Scott Schoeneweis has signed a minor league deal with the Brewers, according to the USA Today.

Our View
Schoeneweis has seen mixed success throughout his 11-year career as both a starter and reliever. He was pretty awful last year for Arizona, posting a 7.15 ERA and 1.75 WHIP in 45 appearances, though it should be noted that he was dealing with the tragic death of his wife. Hopefully things will work out better for him in Milwaukee.
02.09  Diamondbacks:  Webb throws off mound
The News
Brandon Webb threw off a mound on Tuesday, the first time he's done so since undergoing shoulder surgery in August, according to MLB.com. "[It] went good," Webb said. "[The] ball came out well, but I was just thinking about arm slot on every throw. That's to be expected, not having thrown on the mound in so long."

Our View
The Diamondbacks will surely be cautious with Webb heading into this spring as he continues to rehab. Webb does, however, expect to be ready by the start of the 2010 regular season as long as he continues to progress as he has been, and there's plenty of reason to believe he'll again be an excellent starting pitcher.
02.09  Athletics:  Taveras released by A's
The News
Willy Taveras has been released by Oakland, according to MLB.com.

Our View
The A's traded for Taveras last week, but it turned out that he was only included in their deal with the Reds as a salary dump that had to be included for the Reds to be willing to give up Adam Rosales. Taveras still has elite speed and should find interest somewhere.
02.09  Orioles:  Orioles agree to deal with Ohman
The News
The Orioles have signed Will Ohman to a minor league deal, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View
Ohman is coming off an injury-plagued season and could have a tough time cracking Baltimore's roster.
02.09  Orioles:  Orioles announce deal with Hendrickson
The News
Baltimore has officially announced it's one-year contract with Mark Hendrickson, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View
The deal includes a 2011 club option. Hendrickson is the only major league pitcher to make at least 10 starts and five relief appearances in each of the last four seasons, though there's not really any value in that statement. There's no need to give him any fantasy attention.
02.09  Indians:  Indians sign Wright to minor league deal
The News
The Indians have signed Jamey Wright to a minor league deal, according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.

Our View
Wright, who went 3-5 with a 4.33 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 65 relief appearances for Royals last year, is a versatile pitcher with the ability to start or come out of the bullpen. He'd seem to have a pretty good shot at making Cleveland's roster.
02.09  Royals:  Marte re-signs with Royals
The News
The Royals have re-signed Victor Marte to a minor league deal, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View
Marte pitched well in the minors last year but allowed 11 runs in 12 innings with the Royals.
02.09  Royals:  Royals sign Bianchi to minor league deal
The News
The Royals have signed Jeff Bianchi to a minor league deal, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View
The 23-year-old hit a nice .308 last year splitting 128 games between Northwest Arkansas and Single-A Wilmington.
02.09  Mets:  Pelfrey to enter camp 25 pounds lighter
The News
When Mike Pelfrey arrives at the Mets' camp next week, he'll be around 25 pounds lighter than the weight he finished last season at, according to the New York Post.

Our View
Starting off the year's training in shape is certainly a good start for Pelfrey, but he still has a lot more to prove before fantasy owners start to take interest. After a decent season in 2008 (13-11, 3.76 ERA, 1.36 WHIP), Pelfrey was pretty bad last year (10-12, 5.03 ERA, 1.51 WHIP).
02.09  Mets:  Murphy getting training at first base with Hernandez
The News
Daniel Murphy has been training with former Mets first baseman Keith Hernandez in an effort to improve his defense at first base, according to Newsdays' David Lennon.

Our View
There can't be many better mentors to teach the first base position than former Mets (and Seinfeld) great Hernandez, who won 11 Gold Gloves at first and is widely considered one of the best, if not the best, defenders ever to play the position. Murphy, a former outfielder, will enter 2010 as the Mets' starting first baseman, and upgrading his defense at the position could help ensure that he plays every day.
02.08  Angels:  Shields won't be ready
The News
Scot Shields, who has been recovering from June knee surgery, is not expected to be ready to throw off a mound at the start of spring training, according to ESPN.

Our View
Shields is not sure how quickly he will be ready to throw off a mound, and is taking things slow. He has confidence he will be ready to go by opening day though. Shields is among the Angels' most valuable relievers when healthy.
02.08  Cardinals:  Giants make offer to Wellemeyer
The News
The Giants have offered Todd Wellemeyer a minor league deal, according to the Mercury News.

Our View
Wellemeyer held a dismal 5.89 ERA and 1.77 WHIP over 122.1 innings (21 starts) with St. Louis in 2009, and the 31-year-old hurler is unlikely going to get a strong deal elsewhere.
02.08  Cardinals:  Schumaker avoids arbitration
The News
Skip Schumaker has agreed to a two-year deal with the Cardinals to avoid arbitration, according to team beat writer Matthew Leach's twitter page. It is believed to be worth $4.7MM.

Our View
Schumaker is batting .307 over his last three seasons in St. Louis, and scored 172 total runs over his last two. The 29-year-old middle infielder was worth retaining for another two years.
02.08  Marlins:  Olenberger signs with Marlins
The News
Kasey Olenberger has signed a minor league deal with the Marlins, according to the Sports Network.

Our View
The 31-year-old hurler is yet to appear in the majors, and was added merely as organizational depth for Florida.
02.08  Indians:  Brantley favorite for starting gig?
The News
Skipper Manny Acta believes that Michael Brantley is the top candidate for the starting gig in left field, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View
Brantley hit .313 over 112 at-bats with the Indians in 2009, and his fantasy stock looks to be on the rise for the upcoming campaign. Trevor Crowe and Austin Kearns will be the other outfielders competing for the No. 1 role in left.
02.08  Mariners:  Cliff Lee had surgery
The News
Cliff Lee had surgery Friday to remove a floating spur in his left foot, according to Larry Stone's (Seattle Times) twitter page.

Our View
Lee is expected to resume normal baseball activities in around 2-3 weeks, and should remain a safe fantasy prospect for 2010.
02.08  Brewers:  Lopez not on Indians' radar?
The News
Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com states that the Indians are not interested in Felipe Lopez.

Our View
The Indians missed out on Orlando Hudson to the rival Twins, but apparently don't see Lopez as a worthy addition to help shore up their middle infield.
02.09  Browns:  Stallworth to Lions?
The News
According to Pro Football Talk, Donte Stallworth is expected to work out for the Lions on Wednesday.

Our View
We don't have to tell you about the personal drama swirling around Stallworth, but it appears the Lions are desperate enough for a receiver to give him a look anyway. In 2008 with the Browns he had just 17 catches for 170 yards and a score in 11 games. It's not likely he has much left in the tank.
02.09  Chiefs:  Ravens work out Webb
The News
According to the National Football Post, the Ravens worked out former Chiefs receiver Jeff Webb last week.

Our View
Webb, 28, is a former sixth-round pick of the Chiefs and has caught 36 career passes for 382 yards and a score. The Ravens desperately need a receiver, but Webb certainly doesn't seem like the answer.
02.09  Rams:  Steven Jackson cleared of wrongdoing
The News
Due to a lack of evidence, Steven Jackson will not face charges for allegedly beating the mother of his child, Supriya Harris, last March, according to TMZ.

Our View
While this does not necessarily mean he is innocent, it is still good news for Jackson and his fans. This, coupled with the fact that Ms. Harris took over 10 months to come forward with her allegations, should leave his reputation relatively unharmed.
02.09  Eagles:  Westbrook not likely to retire
The News
Brian Westbrook isn't likely to retire this offseason, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View
In his own words, he is "just trying to enjoy this offseason and trying to get ready for this next upcoming season." With his lingering knee, ankle and head (concussion) problems, don't expect him to be a big fantasy contributor in 2010.
02.09  Bears:  Bears likely to cut Vasher
The News
Due $2.95 million in 2010, Nathan Vasher will most likely be released, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View
He finished up 2009 as barely a part-time contributor, and just isn't worth the money anymore. Perhaps a change of scenery will do him well, but for the moment, he won't be worth a look in IDP leagues next season.
02.09  Ravens:  Sypniewski has followup surgery
The News
According to Aaron Wilson on Twitter, Ravens tight end Quinn Sypniewski underwent a minor followup surgery on his injured left knee.

Our View
Sypniewski has now had three surgeries since originally injuring the knee in 2008 training camp. He was a fine blocker before the injury, but was never an offensive or fantasy option. Now he'll struggle just to get a shot in next season's training camp.
02.09  Browns:  Stallworth has workout scheduled for Wednesday
The News
Donte Stallworth's agent Drew Rosenhaus said that a number of teams have shown interest in his client and that Stallworth will work out for an undisclosed NFL team tomorrow, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View
Rosenhaus said he expects Stallworth to sign with someone over the next few weeks. While we've learned to take anything Rosenhaus says with a grain of salt, Stallworth is just 28 and apparently still in fine shape after being out of the league last season due to a suspension stemming from a DUI manslaughter conviction. It wouldn't be surprising to see a team in need of a deep threat give Stallworth a second chance.
02.09  Lions:  Dorsey apparently signs with Lions
The News
DeDe Dorsey claims to have signed a deal with Detroit, according to the Detroit News.

Our View
Dorsey is a smallish scatback with nice open-field moves, though unfortunately for him, Aaron Brown is pretty much the same thing. Dorsey will probably have to contribute on special teams if he wants a chance at opening the 2010 season on the Lions' roster.
02.09  Steelers:  London added to Steelers' roster
The News
Brandon London has signed a futures contract with the Steelers, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View
Pittsburgh signed punter Adam Graessle as well. Both will compete for roster spots heading into next season.
02.09  Bears:  Olsen to see significantly reduced role under Martz
The News
New Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz suggested that Greg Olsen will be asked to block much more than he has in the past, according to Pro Football Talk. "All tight ends, their first responsibility, they have to put their hand down on the line of scrimmage and be a successful blocker, and then they move to receiving," Martz said. "To just skip by that and say, 'He's a terrific receiver,' well, then you might as well just put another wide receiver in there."

Our View
Martz's offenses have never been friendly to tight ends, and in fact no tight end has ever caught 40 balls in any of his offenses. Olsen led the Bears with 60 receptions and eight touchdowns last year, but it looks like there's no way he'll approach those numbers under the Martz regime. You have to wonder if the Bears will consider trading him, because there are plenty of teams that would be ecstatic at the potential to land a pass-catching tight end of Olsen's talent.
02.09  Bears:  Martz plans to move Hester to slot
The News
New Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz indicated that he plans to reduce Devin Hester role on offense slightly so that Hester can focus more on special teams, according to Pro Football Talk. "It would be very difficult for [Hester] to play every snap on offense and still play effectively on special teams," Martz said.

Our View
Martz said that he envisions playing Hester in the slot, the same spot that he used Az-Zahir Hakim in back in his heyday with the Rams. It's worth nothing that Hakim never caught more than 53 balls or reached 750 receiving yards, needless to say that Hester's fantasy value seems to have taken a hit.
02.08  Dolphins:  Porter expected to be cut by Miami
The News
Joey Porter is expected to be cut by the Dolphins prior to the start of free agency, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View
The 33-year-old rush linebacker chipped in 32 sacks over three seasons with the Dolphins. He should be able to catch on with another club.
02.08  Giants:  Giants claim Taylor
The News
The Giants have claimed Herb Taylor off waivers from the Broncos, according to Brad Biggs of the National Football Post.

Our View
Taylor has appeared in 18 games (made one start) over three years in the NFL. He will compete for a roster spot with the Giants in training camp.
02.08  Bears:  Urlacher expected to be ready
The News
Brian Urlacher is expected to be ready to participate at the start of the Bears' offseason program, according to their official team website.

Our View
Urlacher has been recovering from a dislocated right wrist that limited him to one game in 2009. The veteran linebacker will turn 32 in May, but should have at least one more good season left in him with Chicago - assuming he can bounce back healthy.
02.08  Giants:  Phillips ahead of schedule
The News
Kenny Phillips is ahead of schedule in his rehab from knee surgery, according to the Star-Ledger.

Our View
Phillips was looking forward to a great 2009 campaign for himself and the Giants prior to going down early in the year. He could be a nice value pick in IDP leagues for 2010, if he can make a successful recovery.
02.08  Packers:  Hawk won't be asked to take pay cut?
The News
The Packers are not expected to ask A.J. Hawk to take a pay cut, according to Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

Our View
Hawk is slated to earn $4.6MM next season. He has racked up 400 tackles and 8.5 sacks over his first four campaigns in the NFL.
02.08  Jaguars:  Hayward is not finished
The News
Reggie Hayward expects to keep playing after suffering a season-ending fractured shin in 2009, according to the Jaguars' official website.

Our View
The 30-year-old vet may be done in Jacksonville though, namely as he has a poor track record with durability.
02.08  Panthers:  Falcons don't comment on Peppers
The News
Head coach Mike Smith would not comment if the Falcons are interested in Julius Peppers, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Smith said, "Until free agency opens (on March 5th), we cannot talk about other players."

Our View
Peppers previously noted that he is open to playing anywhere, and the Falcons will have a need for a strong pass rusher of his caliber. Atlanta only registered 28 sacks in 2009.
02.08  Broncos:  Broncos add B. Hall
The News
The Broncos have signed Bruce Hall, according to Aaron Wilson's (Ravens Insider) twitter page.

Our View
Hall did not see any action during his two-year stint with Buffalo, and the running back is not likely going to push for a roster spot with Denver.
02.08  Chiefs:  Chiefs release Rogers
The News
Justin Rogers has been released by the Chiefs, according to team writer Josh Looney's twitter page.

Our View
Rogers failed to impress during his stint in Kansas City in 2009. The linebacker is unlikely to make an impact in fantasy leagues next season.
02.08  Browns:  Bowie signs with Browns
The News
John Bowie has signed a deal with the Browns, according to agent Andy Simms' twitter page.

Our View
The former member of the Raiders is excited about getting a fresh start in Cleveland, but he is not expected to register a blip on the IDP radar for 2010.
02.08  Saints:  Brunell unsure of future
The News
Mark Brunell is unsure if he wants to continue his career in the NFL or hang up his cleats, according to Florida Times-Union.

Our View
Brunell will turn 40 in September, and may decide to end his career on a high note after the Saints won the Super Bowl yesterday. He has not thrown a touchdown pass since 2006 (with Washington).
02.08  Dolphins:  Miami could ask Wilson to take pay cut
The News
The Dolphins would reportedly consider retaining Gibril Wilson if he takes a deep pay cut, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View
The star safety is believed to be on the trading block, after being one of the Dolphins' top free agent signings of 2009. He refused to take a pay cut during his stay in Oakland.
02.08  Browns:  Browns officially done with Stallworth
The News
The Browns have terminated Donte Stallworth's contract, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View
The troubled receiver was under contract with Cleveland through 2014. Stallworth was re-instated by the NFL today after serving a one-year suspension for his DUI manslaughter conviction. He is now free to sign with any team, but won't be a hot target on the free agent market.
02.08  Bears:  Bennett pleased with Martz
The News
Earl Bennett was very pleased with new offensive coordinator Mike Martz after their meeting today, according to the Bears' official website. Bennett said, "He made a great impression. He is a mastermind offensive coach who is going to spread the ball around and wants to take us to that next level. I am ready to work hard for him."

Our View
Bennett hauled in 54 catches for 717 yards and two scores with the erratic Bears in 2009, and could potentially be headed for a breakout 2010 campaign, which will mark his third in the NFL. He will be on our radar when hunting for sleepers.
02.09  Nets:  Devin Harris out
The News
Devin Harris (shoulder) will not play on Tuesday night against the Cavaliers, according to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer.

Our View
In related news, the Nets have no chance on Tuesday night against the Cavs. Harris is day-to-day.
02.09  Clippers:  Davis more free?
The News
With domineering coach Mike Dunleavy out in Los Angeles, point guard Baron Davis will now be able to play a "little freer," and "off (his) instincts," according to Yahoo! Sports.

Our View
Translation, in theory he should no longer average "only" 16 points and 7.9 assists per game. Of course, that is only if Dunleavy, and not Davis' advancing age, was the cause of his struggles. Stay tuned.
02.09  Warriors:  Ellis iffy for Wednesday
The News
Monta Ellis has been diagnosed with a left knee sprain, and is questionable for Wednesday against the Clippers, according to Yahoo! Sports.

Our View
He will reportedly be re-evaluated on Wednesday. In daily leagues, be prepared not to have him tomorrow.
02.09  Lakers:  Kobe a game-time decision for Wednesday
The News
Kobe Bryant (ankle) will be a game-time decision against the Jazz on Wednesday, according to beat writer Mike Trudell.

Our View
The man who never misses a game has so far missed two. That might be all that he can bear. Tentatively expect him to be a go tomorrow.
02.09  76ers:  Iverson will miss two more games
The News
Allen Iverson will miss two more games while tending to his sick daughter, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer's Kate Fagan.

Our View
Iverson has already missed three games due to the personal matter, and it looks like he won't be back with the 76ers until after the All-Star break. No word yet as to whether or not he'll be available for the All-Star game.
02.09  Celtics:  Davis-for-Augustin being discussed
The News
The Celtics are in discussion with the Bobcats regarding a potential trade that would send Glen Davis to Charlotte in exchange for D.J. Augustin, according to ESPN.com.

Our View
Such a trade would seem to make some sense. Both are talented young players who could be potential starters down the road, though Davis has had a few off-the-court incidences that have soured his tenure in Boston, while Augustin has had trouble carving out a role for himself in Charlotte. Both could benefit in new uniforms, though it's unlikely either would start this season.
02.09  Trail Blazers:  Batum replaces Bayless in Blazers' starting lineup
The News
Nicolas Batum will be moved into Portland's starting lineup, according to the Oregonian.

Our View
He'll start at small forward, bumping Martell Webster down to the two and Jarryd Bayless to the second unit. The move will upgrade the Blazers on defense, though Batum will find it hard to garner much fantasy value, especially with Brandon Roy coming back shortly.
02.09  Nets:  Hayes should play despite bruised leg
The News
Jarvis Hayes (leg) is expected to play against Cleveland tonight, according to the Bergen Record.

Our View
Hayes has started all four of the Nets' games this month and probably will get his fifth on Tuesday. Owners in deeper leagues couldn't hurt to give Hayes a look.
02.09  Nuggets:  Billups likely to play despite sore ankles
The News
Chauncey Billups, who is recovering from two sprained ankles, is expected to play against Dallas tonight, according to the Denver Post.

Our View
Billups may not possess his usual burst tonight, but he can still be a fine source of assists and three-pointers. It'd probably be best to have him active in your lineup.
02.09  Nets:  Jianlian questionable against Cavaliers
The News
Yi Jianlian is questionable against the Cavs Tuesday with a sore right shoulder, according to the Bergen Record.

Our View
If Yi can't go, look for Kris Humphries to start in his place and make for a fine fantasy fill-in capable of posting a double-double.
02.09  Cavaliers:  West will remain sidelined on Tuesday
The News
Despite looking good in practice yesterday, Delonte West (finger) will not play when the Cavs take on New Jersey tonight, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View
With Daniel Gibson playing well, it's looking like Cleveland will play it safe with West and have him rest up through the All-Star break. Look for him to be back after that, though he'll have only a few weeks to start until Mo Williams returns.
02.09  Bobcats:  Chandler back tonight after six weeks off
The News
Tyson Chandler (foot) is expected to play tonight, according to the Charlotte Observer.

Our View
The big man has been out since late December with a stress reaction in his left foot, but it looks like he's finally ready to return to action. Still, expect Nazr Mohammed to continue to start, at least for now, while Chandler gets back into playing shape.
02.09  Bobcats:  Felton should be able to go tonight
The News
Raymond Felton (ankle) expects to play tonight, though coach Larry Brown says he'll be a game-time decision, according to the Charlotte Observer.

Our View
Felton is one of the tougher players of the league, and thus it'd come as a surprise if he wasn't on the court tonight. Check back in before game-time, but it seems relatively safe to keep him active in your lineup.
02.09  Grizzlies:  Arthur to return tonight after four months off
The News
Darrell Arthur (pectoral surgery) will make his season debut with the Grizzlies on Tuesday, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

Our View
Arthur had a solid rookie year last season where he saw a bit of fantasy relevance, though you can't expect him to make too much of an impact this year, and certainly not initially. Look for him to serve as one of Zach Randolph's backups.
02.09  Bulls:  Thomas' days with Bulls numbered
The News
Tyrus Thomas' days with the Bulls seem very much numbered, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View
The Bulls will do everything they can to trade him before the Feb. 18 trade deadline, and even if they're unable to find a suitor, you can expect them to let him walk after this season when he's due to become a restricted free agent. Thomas' ability to block shots does cater well to fantasy, and thus he could end up getting a boost in value if he lands on a team where he is not in the coach's doghouse and can get more minutes.
02.09  Warriors:  Ellis sprains left knee, MRI scheduled for Tuesday
The News
Monta Ellis suffered a sprained left knee on Monday night, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

Our View
Ellis will undergo an MRI at some point today, after which we'll know more about when he'll be back. Still, you can bet he won't be on the court tomorrow against the Clippers, meaning a return after the All-Star break against the Lakers next Tuesday seems like a best-case scenario.
02.09  Warriors:  G-State won't give Karl another 10-day contract
The News
The Warriors have opted not to sign Coby Karl to a second 10-day contract, according to the Contra Costa Times.

Our View
George Karl's son had been getting some decent minutes, and even a start, in his brief stint with the Warriors, but it looks like it's back to the D-League for him. He averaged seven points, four rebounds and 3.8 assists over his four games with Golden State.
02.09  Celtics:  Pierce expected to play on Wednesday
The News
Paul Pierce (left foot sprain) is expected to suit up and play tomorrow when the Celtics take on the Hornets, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View
Pierce has been dealing with a sore left foot for the past week and was held out of the end of Boston's practice yesterday, but it looks like that move was more precautionary than necessary. It can't hurt to check back in on his status tomorrow, but it looks like Pierce will be active.
02.09  Lakers:  Bryant to be a game-time decision on tomorrow
The News
Kobe Bryant said that he cannot push off his sprained left ankle, which has limited his ability to run and shoot, according to the Orange County Register.

Our View
Look for him to be a game-time decision yet again when the Lakers face Utah on Wednesday. Check back in tomorrow, as you can bet there will be plenty of coverage on Kobe given his status as one of the league's most talked-about superstars.
02.09  Rockets:  Ariza out tonight, Budinger will start in his place
The News
Trevor Ariza (hip) will not be available for the Rockets when they face Miami tonight, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View
Luckily, tonight's contest against the Heat is Houston's only game before the All-Star break, and Ariza is fully expected to be back next Tuesday when the Rockets have on date with the Jazz on Feb. 16. Chase Budinger will start in Ariza's place tonight and makes for a fine temporary fill-in.
02.08  Mavericks:  Beaubois won't be traded
The News
Dallas owner Mark Cuban made it clear that Rodrigue Beaubois is not available in a trade, according to ESPN. Cuban said, "There is maybe one or two guys in the league that I would trade him for. That is it. Other than that, he is pretty much untouchable."

Our View
The young point guard has good upside, and could be the eventual replacement for Jason Kidd.
02.08  Hornets:  Collison looks good at Orlando
The News
Darren Collison poured in 27 points in tonight's 123-117 loss at Orlando. He also notched three rebounds, nine assists and four steals.

Our View
The rookie continues to do a good job in place of the injured Chris Paul, and is averaging 22.6 points over his last three games.
02.08  Hornets:  West fares well at Orlando
The News
David West fared well in Monday's 123-117 loss at Orlando, as he racked up 27 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Our View
West left a bit to be desired in the rebounding department, but he scored above his season average over 17.9 points per game. He was coming off a 21-point effort at Charlotte.

02.09  Devils:  Salmela out Wednesday
The News
According to TSN.com, Devils defenseman Ansi Salmela will miss Wednesday's contest with a concussion and broken nose.

Our View
Salmela left Monday's game on a stretcher after getting leveled by the Flyers Jeff Carter. He doesn't have any super-serious injuries and appeared to be fine leaving Monday's game, but don't be surprised if he misses a little more time this week while his bruises heal and his head clears up.

Our View
Don't expect Getzlaf on the ice tomorrow against Edmonton, though the Ducks have games on Saturday and Sunday, so hopefully he'll be back for at least one of those. The News
Martin Biron will get the nod against the Predators tonight, according to Newsday.

The News

02.09  Canadiens:  Bergeron could miss up to two months
The News
Marc-Andre Bergeron leg injury is expected to keep him out the next 6-to-8 weeks, according to the Montreal Gazette.

Our View
Bergeron was hit in the leg by a shot on Feb. 4, and it looks like the subsequent injury is worse than originally thought. With the lengthy timetable, it might make sense to cut him loose if there's someone else you've been eying in free agency.
02.09  Capitals:  Goalie Varlamov recalled by Capitals
The News
The Capitals have recalled Semyon Varlamov (knee) from his conditioning stint in the AHL, according to the Washington Post.

Our View
There's no word yet on whether Varlamov will get the call for tomorrow's game at Montreal, though it seems like a good bet that he'll get at least one start over Washington's three remaining games before the Olympic break. Varlamov, who's been out since Dec. 7, was a fantastic 12-1-2 prior to getting hurt while posting a 2.21 GAA and .924 save percentage and should regain his starting role over Jose Theodore and Michal Neuvirth before long.

The News
Ray Emery underwent an MRI yesterday and may have a torn labrum that could require surgery at some point down the road, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Our View
It looks like Emery should be able to play through the hip ailment for the time being and very well may be between the piper for the Flyers on Wednesday when they face the Devils. Still, his fantasy owners should know that he may not be at full strength the rest of this season.
02.09  Hurricanes:  Ruutu will return tonight after 15 games off
The News
Tuomo Ruutu (upper body) will be back in action for the Hurricanes when they take on Panthers, according to the Raleigh News and Observer.

Our View

02.09  Hendrick Motorsports looks to rebound after shaky Shootout
The News
Despite having all four cars in the Budweiser Shootout, Hendrick Motorsports failed to have a single driver finish in the top five, according to Yahoo! Sports.

Our View
Jeff Gordon was the only HMS driver that cracked the top 10, finishing sixth. Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the Shootout in 2008, but HMS hasn't won a regular season event at Daytona since Jimmie Johnson won the 500 in 2006. The organization will look to get back to victory lane at the famed 2.5-mile track this weekend with Mark Martin and Dale Earnhardt Jr. already earning front row starting spots.
02.09  Edwards shines in the Shootout
The News
Although a late wreck dropped him to 17th, Carl Edwards led a race-high 42 laps in the Budweiser Shootout, according to SceneDaily.com.

Our View
After going winless last season, Edwards won't want to waste much time getting back to victory lane. He has posted up-and-down results at plate tracks in his career, but he has been showing signs of putting things together. With three finishes of fourth or better in his last five Daytona starts, he is worth considering this weekend.
02.09  JR Motorsports still seeking sponsorship
The News
According to The Associated Press, Dale Earnhardt, Jr is still seeking associate sponsors for his Nationwide Series teams.

Our View
JR Motorsports isn't in financial trouble by any means, but the fact that sponsorship opportunities are still available with the sport's most popular driver says something about the economic state of NASCAR. Many teams are forced to use multiple sponsors instead of one primary sponsor.
02.09  Ambrose facing high expectations entering Daytona
The News
After a surprising 17th-place finish in the standings last season, Marcos Ambrose has been tabbed as a Chase contender in 2010, according to Yahoo! Sports.

Our View
Based on his numbers last season, Ambrose should start his Chase push off on a good note. He finished 17th in his Daytona 500 debut last year, and he followed it up with a sixth-place finish in the July event. His 11.5 finishing average is the top mark among active drivers at the track.

The News
After a disappointing 2009 season, David Ragan will look to start the 2010 season off on the right foot with a strong showing in the Daytona 500, according to SceneDaily.com.

Our View
Running well at Daytona has never been a problem for Ragan. His sixth-place finish in the 500 last year was his best run all season, and his 13.8 finishing average at the track is the third best among active drivers. Ragan is a solid fantasy option in the opener, but owners need to take a wait and see approach with Ragan during the next few weeks.
02.09  Kenseth wants to rediscover consistency
The News
Although he has a chance to be the first driver since Sterling Marlin to win back to back Daytona 500s, Matt Kenseth is focusing on the big picture, according to TBO.com,

Our View
Kenseth won the first two races of the 2009 season, but he struggled the rest of the year and missed the Chase for the first time in his career. That being said, fantasy owners shouldn't be afraid to put Kenseth in theri lineups this weekend. He has three straight finishes of eighth or better at Daytona.

Unlike other races, teams may change engines prior to Happy Hour practice for the Daytona 500 and not forfeit their starting position, according to Jayski.com.

Our View
Baldwin already had Bliss sponsored for 10 races, meaning Bliss has the opportunity to attempt at least 24 complete races this season. 02.08  No. 09 team loses primary sponsor
The News
According to FoxSports.com, Miccosukee Resort and Gaming will no longer serve as a sponsor for Phoenix Racing.

Our View
The decision to end the sponsorship came after a change in tribal leadership. Aric Almirola was slated to run a full schedule in 2010 in the No. 09, but those plans could now change. Team owner James Finch still plans to try to qualify for the Daytona 500, but the long-term state of the team is in doubt.
02.08  Patrick to compete in Nationwide opener
The News
Danica Patrick will make her Nationwide Series debut in the season opener at Daytona, according to MRN.com.

Our View
She finished sixth in her ARCA debut last weekend, and that was apparently enough to convince Patrick and JR Motorsports that she is ready for Nationwide competition. The Daytona 500 may be the main event of Speedweeks, but Patrick's Nationwide debut is going to draw just as much hype.

The News
According to ESPN.com, Kyle Busch and his girlfriend Samantha Sarcinella are now engaged.

The 24-year-old Joe Gibbs Racing driver popped the question Thursday night. It looks like NASCAR's bad boy has a heart after all. Maybe the engaged Busch can find his way back to the Chase in 2010.

This leaves four transfer spots up for grabs in Thursday's Gatorade Duel 150s.

The News
Kevin Harvick emerged from a wild final two laps with his second straight Budweiser Shootout victory, according to MRN.com.

He took the lead from Greg Biffle with two laps to go as the No. 16 car was sent spinning by a tap from Jeff Gordon. Harvick became the fourth driver to win the event in consecutive seasons. Last year, he followed up his win with a second place finish in the Daytona 500.

The News
According to NASCAR.com, Danica Patrick finished sixth in her ARCA debut.

02.06  Newman's father out as spotter
The News
According to NASCAR.com, Ryan Newman will no longer have his father serve as his spotter.

Our View

02.06  Martin scores first Daytona 500 pole
The News
The pole for the 52nd running of the Daytona 500 went to Mark Martin, according to MRN.com.

Our View
It was Martin's first career pole for the event, and he will be joined on the front row by his teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. Martin won seven poles and five races a year ago, but he has never won the Daytona 500. The pole is a good first step towards exorcising some demons at the plate tracks after having nothing but bad luck at Daytona and Talladega last year.

The News
Danica Patrick briefly claimed the top spot for her ARCA series debut, but settled for a 12th-place qualifying effort, according to MRN.com.

02.05  Wrecks highlight Shootout practices
The News
Contact between Mark Martin and Denny Hamlin during the first practice session for the Budweiser Shotoout triggered a six-car wreck, according to MRN.com.

Our View
Hamlin, Martin, Greg Biffle, Jamie McMurray and the No. 29 team were all forced to back-up cars. Kurt Busch was sent into the wall by Juan Pablo Montoya in a separate incident, and he will also use a back-up car. Hamlin, Martin and Busch will start from the rear of the field because they did not practice in their back-up car. If this was any indication, it looks like Saturday's Budweiser Shootout could be an exciting one.
02.05  Harvick suffering from the flu
The News
As he attempts to recover from a bout with the flu, Kevin Harvick skipped Thursday's selection show that determines the starting lineup for the Budweiser Shootout, according to MRN.com.

02.05  Edwards draws Shootout pole
The News
According to the MRN.com, Carl Edwards will start on the pole for Saturday's Budweiser Shootout.

Our View

Our View
Several golfers gave chase with better rounds on the final day, including Luke Donald, J.B. Holmes, and Dustin Johnson, but Stricker held tight and posted back-to-back birdies after the turn to pull away and secure the win. He finished at 268 (-16) on the week to beat Donald by two strokes, earning $1.152 million to push his career earnings over $25 million. Johnson and Holmes tied for third, three strokes back.
02.08  Na, Verplank, Campbell get spots in Match Play Championship
The News

The top 64 players in the world, barring withdrawal or refusal, make the grade and those three players all pushed into that group following positive results at the Northern Trust Open.

Our View
Phil Mickelson has announced he will not attend and reports indicate Tiger Woods will be taking a pass as well. That could give Ross McGowan, sitting at #65 in the latest World Golf Rankings, a spot in the field but we won't have those finalized plans until Friday. Stay tuned.
02.08  Jimenez tops Westwood in playoff at Dubai
The News
Miguel Angel Jimenez defeated Lee Westwood on the third hole of a sudden death playoff Sunday to win the Dubai Desert Classic, according to the Associated Press. Westwood missed a 5-foot par putt on the third playoff hole to leave Jimenez with a 4-footer for the win, which he calmly sank for the 16th victory of his career. "After so many years of coming to Dubai and playing well, I am proud to have finally won this title," the Spaniard said. "I have always loved the course, the ambiance and the people here."

Our View
Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand and Alvaro Quiros or Spain were also tied for the overnight lead but faded in the final round. Thongchai shot a 73 to finish third, while Quiros ended up in a tie for sixth after a 75 as strong crosswinds and faster greens led to higher scores than in previous rounds at the Emirates Golf Club. Golf icon Tom Watson continued to impress, shooting 68 - his best score of the week - to find a share of eighth place in his first visit to Dubai.

Our View
Luke Donald also went low on the day with a 66, sitting in the clubhouse with the lead when Stricker took to Hole 1. J.B. Holmes was on the mark as well with a 67 of his own to join the pack, along with Andres Romero, sitting at 9-under par. Stricker topped 'em by five strokes and was absolutely stellar.

Westwood won at the Dubai World Championship back in November and seems likely to emerge once again on Sunday. Tune into The Golf Channel for the telecast.

The News
Sources claimed to be "close" to Tiger Woods are reporting the golf great will not be returning to PGA play at the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship in two weeks, according to FoxNews.com. "As far as I know (Woods' return) will not be at the Match Play," a source close to Woods told FOXSports.com Friday. A second insider said he had no direct knowledge of when Woods would make his comeback but that his "gut feeling" was that it would not be in Arizona.

Our View
The Fox reports also cites a report from the Australian tabloid the Melbourne Herald-Sun which claims to have been told Tiger has been preparing for a return at the Match Play Championship at the Ritz-Carlton Dove Mountain course in Tucson. PGA Tour officials as well as representatives from Accenture both report no communications have been had with Tiger and they have no indication at this time if he will be in the field or not. If you want to stretch speculation, Tiger has reportedly been in a Mississippi clinic confronting his sexual urges since early January. The therapy runs six weeks, which would leave him perhaps a week to prepare for the Match Play -- not enough time for a player renowned for his painstaking preparation.
02.06  Stricker pulls into tie atop Northern Trust Open
The News
First-round leader Dustin Johnson needed a hole-in-one to keep the pace at the Northern Trust Open today as Steve Stricker made a serious charge, carding a round of 65 (-6) on the day, according to the Associated Press.

Our View

Jaidee carded six birdies without a single bogey on the day, holding a one-shot lead on Lee Westwood, Stephen Dodd, and the great Miguel Angel Jimenez.

Our View
The Day 1 leader, Rory McIlroy, was on pace to stay ahead until he suffered a double bogey on the 18th hole to fall two strokes back of the lead with four other golfers. Tom Watson made the cut, shooting 70 today to pull within five strokes of the lead. Thongchai has four career wins on the European Tour, including the Indonesia Open and the Ballantine's Championship in 2009.

Romero closed with four consecutive birdies to post his 65 while Stadler posted a 30 on the back nine to keep pace. Brandt Snedeker and Ricky Barnes are one-stroke back of that group, both posting 66. 02.04  Tiger tops endorsement list despite fall in total value
The News
It would appear the drama did little to damage Tiger Woods's personal value as Forbes announced today that Tiger ranks at the top of their new list of the world's top sports brands (in the athlete category), according to Alan Bastable with Golf.com. "Even though Woods isn't likely to see a repeat of the $105 million he earned from sponsors last year anytime soon, his remaining deals, including those with Nike, Electronic Arts and Procter & Gamble's Gillette, will still earn enough to keep him the world's highest-paid athlete in 2010, even if he does not hit a single golf ball all year. Woods' 2009 endorsement total, on which this list is based, was more than the next three highest-earning athlete spokesmen combined."

Bastable also noted Phil Mickelson, the only other golfer in the top 10 (tied for seventh with tennis star Maria Sharapova).
02.04  Faldo thinks Tiger will return for The Masters
The News
Golf great Nick Faldo spent some time with Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton on New York sports radio station WFAN today, stating (among other things) his belief Tiger Woods will return for The Masters, according to Alan Bastable with Golf.com. "It's a funny place to start maybe, but personally I think it's a great place to start," Faldo said, citing the tournament's airtight security and the fact that reporters and photographers are prohibited inside the ropes. "It's just you and your caddie."

Our View
Faldo also noted he was surprised to hear of Tiger's troubled personal life and spoke on the challenges that lie ahead for golf's best. "I don't think the golf is the challenge, the hurdle, to start off with," Faldo added. "I think the golf is the easy bit. It's the coming out - in a different way [chuckles]. He hasn't seen the media at all, the public. Tiger's probably never faced any fears in his life since he was 2-years-old. He was built for success, wasn't he? And everything has been successful in his career."
02.04  Pavin surprises with Ryder Cup assistants
The News
Corey Pavin, the veteran duffer tasked with serving as captain for this year's US Ryder Cup team, announced his choices for the four assistant roles on the team, according to the Associated Press. The list includes two players that have never served the US team in play against Europe, those being Jeff Sluman and Paul Goydos. They will join Tom Lehman and Davis Love III to round out the coaching staff for this year's tourney.

Our View
Fans may be a bit surprised by the choice of Goydos and Sluman but both are widely respected by players from the Tour and fans alike. They are widely experienced and still manage to swing with the big boys on Tour from time to time, thus their additions could be as beneficial as any other choice available. Fantasy owners may be a bit surprise do see DL3 as a captain. While he has not been as successful over recent season, Love III enjoyed a fantastic 2009 campaign and could have been considered as alternate on the player roster. The Ryder Cup will be Oct. 1-3 in Wales. The United States is the defending champion after beating Europe at Valhalla in 2008.
02.04  Mickelson takes Ping Eye2 out of the bag for Northern Trust
The News
It was another busy day for equipment talk as Phil Mickelson, in preparation for this week's Northern Trust Open, has announced he will be taking the controversial Ping Eye2 wedge out of his bag for the week, according to the Associated Press. "I won't be playing that wedge. My point has been made," Mickelson said Wednesday on the eve of his two-time title defense at Riviera. "But if these governing bodies cannot get together to fix this loophole, if players stop using this wedge - which would stop the pressure of the issue - then I will relook at it and put the wedge back in play."

Our View
The Ping Eye2 is the one club allowed in PGA Tour play the employs square grooves, believed to give golfers improved feel and control in longer grass. The Ping wedge has grooves that no longer conform under a new USGA regulation, adopted by the PGA Tour. However, any Ping wedge made before April 1, 1990, is approved for play under a legal settlement from two decades ago. Mickelson is one of five players that has employed this club in play this season, a list that also included John Daly (credited with discovering the loophole) and Dean Wilson.
02.02  Ping responds to groove controversy
The News
With the continued drama surrounding the rules of golf, the shape of club face grooves, and the loophole allowing golfers to use older Ping Eye2 wedges with non-conforming grooves prompted John Solheim, Ping's chairman and CEO, to issue a statement today, according to David Dusek with Golf.com. It is a lengthy statement and we ask that you follow the provided link to read it all.

Our View
The Cliff Notes version: Ping wants to insure fans they are not hoping to help professional golfers bend the rules, they believe the recent characterizations describing their wedges with "U" shaped grooves as "non-conforming" is untrue and unwarranted, and that while they want golfers to utilize these clubs, Ping is going to seek opportunities to work with the PGA Tour to find a solution for the current situation. More over, Solheim wanted to remind golfers that recent rumor of course or event-specific rules designed to ban the Ping Eye2 would be against the PGA Tour's agreement to avoid utilizing rules that "differed from a USGA rule."
02.02  Kim focused and ready for 2010
The News
Anthony Kim was on hand for practice rounds at Riviera today in preparation for this week's Northern Trust Open and spent time talking to reporters about the stress of failures in 2009 and his drive to reverse fortunes in 2010, according to the Associated Press. "After the year I had two years ago, even though people said it was a breakout year, I don't feel like I did anything super special," Kim said Tuesday morning while driving to Riviera. "I would like to do something super special this year." When asked what he has in mind to get back on track, Kim replied, "Win golf tournaments. Nobody cares if you finish in the top 10."

Our View
Two years ago Kim was the rising star of the golf show, moving into 6th place in the World Golf Rankings at 22-years of age. Last season he struggled mightily, suffering through a stretch of 14 consecutive starts without a top-10 finish, falling to #26 on the World Golf Rankings. To his credit Kim closed strong, finishing 2nd at the European Tour's Volvo World Match Play Championship followed by T10 at the WGC HSBC Championsa nd T14 at the Chevron World Challenge. This week's event at Riviera will be his first PGA start of the '10 season.
02.02  McIlroy suggests golf could do more to limit technology
The News
Rory McIlroy took time out of practice for this week's defense of his Desert Classic title to talk to reporters, suggesting the PGA Tour as well as the Royal & Ancient (the governing bodies of professional golf) should be doing more to curb the advances of technology rather than asking golfers to conform to equipment policies, according to the Associated Press. "I don't see why they don't firm greens up and get the rough longer to bring down scores," McIlroy exclaimed. "They can make golf courses a lot toughter and turn 20-under winning scores into 12 under. I think they are trying to bring the whole professional game and the amateur game closer together. When I turn on TV and I am watching a tournament, I don't like to see guys struggling for pars all the time. I think people like to see birdies as well."

Our View
The controversy surround club grooves and the Ping Eye2 wedge has caused many in the game to voice opinion and McIlroy seems ready to serve as the voice of the fan. We do enjoy seeing good golf with low scores, but he also feels the chase to limit the technology in the game isn't enough to keep scores reasonable. This is a debate that has raged for several weeks now and it appears there is no end in sight.
01.31  Crane earns third career PGA win at Farmers Insurance Open
The News
Ben Crane put his best foot forward today, shooting a round of 70 (-2) to seize victory at the Farmers Insurance Open, according to the Associated Press. "Obviously, being in the news a month ago was bizarre," Crane said. "Someone made some stuff up that I said something about Tiger, which I didn't. To be in the news again? Yeah, my name keeps popping up. It's good to be (in the news) on a good note."

Our View
Crane sank not one but two amazing birdie putts on the day, both measuring over 45 feet in length. He finished at 13 strokes under par (275) to earn his third career PGA victory, earning invites to the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship and The Masters. Marc Leishman, Brandt Snedeker, and Michael Sim finished one stroke back in a tie for second place with an impressive group finishing in the top ten, including phenom Rickie Fowler, Nick Watney, Charles Howell III, Robert Allenby, Lucas Glover, Ryuji Imada, and Ernie Els.
01.31  Karlsson finds a win at Qatar Masters
The News
He was lurking all week long and today Robert Karlsson caught the pack and emerged victorious at the Qatar Masters, closing with a round of 65 (-7) to finish at 15 strokes under par (273) for the tourney, according to the Associated Press.

Our View

Alvaro Quiros, the defending champ, also surged on Sunday to finish second. Lee Westwood pushed to tie for 1st place but lost that spot over the final three holes, falling into a tie for third place with Bret Rumford.
01.30  Imada seizes lead at Farmers Insurance Open
The News
While the rest of the field found struggle and heartburn at Torrey Pines, Ryuji Imada remained steady, carding a round of 70 (-2) to take the lead at the Farmers Insurance Open, according to the Associated Press. Imada's card shows he failed to register but two birdies but he, unlike most of the field, failed to make a major mistake and now stands at 203 (-13) for the tourney, two strokes ahead of Ben Crane and Michael Sim.

Our View
Defending US Open champion Lucas Glover had a great day as well, carding a 68 despite shooting a double bogey on the back nine. He is in sole possession of fourth place and is three shots off the lead. Phil Mickelson carded a round of 70 and is part of a group sitting four shots back of the top spot.
01.30  Tour responds to square groove controversy
The News
The PGA Tour responded to recent criticism and question surrounding the ever-growing groove debate that has allowed Phil Mickelson, John Daly, and others to utilize wedges normally outlawed by Tour guidelines, according to Golf.com. The statement reads, "Under the Rules of Golf and the 2010 Condition of Competition for Groove Specifications promulgated by the USGA, pre-1990 Ping Eye 2 irons are permitted for play and any player who uses them in PGA Tour sanctioned events taking place in jurisdictions of the USGA is not in violation of the Rules of Golf."

Our View
The wedges in question would be the Ping Eye 2, originally produced before the 1990 season. Those irons are constructed with square grooves and will allow golfers better control on approach shots to hard greens. The loophole allowing those older non-conforming clubs allowed the debate to grow when Mickelson brought them to the Farmers Insurance Open this week, leading fellow PGA Tour member Scott McCarron to call him a "cheater." In response to McCarron's statements, the Tour added, "Because the use of pre-1990 Ping Eye 2 irons is permitted for play," the statement says, "public comments or criticisms characterizing their use as a violation of the Rules of Golf as promulgated by the USGA are inappropriate at best."
01.30  Daly clarifies issues, "retirement" via Twitter
The News
Shortly after proclaiming he was done with golf, John Daly retracted his "retirement" via Twitter and noted financial troubles are causing issues, according to the Associated Press. "To ALL my Fans---my financial situation is putting me where I cannot focus on my game, I'm putting too much pressure on myself, the few sponsors that I have are great but it's not getting me thru these times--," the first part of the message read. "I want to thank my fans throughout all these years & I don't like to continue to embarass myself-- maybe my mind may change down the road but right now i don't have the money to be on the tour. My game has never been the same since my rib injury during the Honda Classic in 2007. God Bless! JD"

Our View
According to the AP reports, this is the second time in six months Daly has said he was retiring. He threatened to quit after shooting 88 in the Buick Open last summer, although his swing coach attributed that to rapid weight loss. Daly went on to play four more times. The Golf Channel has been promoting a reality show starring Daly that is to debut in March. Daly is scheduled to play in two weeks at Pebble Beach, and he has received a sponsor's exemption to the Transitions Championship outside Tampa, Fla., in March.
01.30  Casey takes top spot after three rounds at Qatar Masters
The News
The powers of the international golf scene continue to battle in Doha as Paul Casey pulled into the top spot today at the Qatar Masters, carding a round of 66 (-6) to force a tie for 1st place with Bradley Dredge, according to the Associated Press.

Our View
Casey has been fighting rib muscle injuries for most of the last two years and has told reporters he still feels discomfort as a result. This is his fourth start of the season on the Euro Tour, having missed the cut at each. Today he carded seven birdies and is on top of his game. Lee Westwood trails by just one stroke while Brett Rumford (the leader coming into the day) and Robert Karlsson are sharing fourth place heading into the final day.
01.30  Points, Imada surge at Farmers Insurance Opening as Mickelson, Allenby lurk
The News
The second round of this week's Farmers Insurance Open was ruled by D.A. Points, carding a round of 65 (-7) to move in front for a tie with Ryuji Imada for first place heading into weekend play, according to the Associated Press. Both Points and Imada were playing on the tougher South Course at Torrey Pines with Imada carding a 68 on the day, putting both golfers at 133 (-11) after two days.

Our View
Michael Sim and Matt Every trail by two strokes. Robert Allenby followed his 67 on Thursday with a 69 today and is three shots off the lead. Phil Mickelson carded a round of 67 today and is four shots off the top spot (well within striking distance). The tournament will be played exclusively on the South Course, having served as the host venue for the US Open two years ago, and that could put proven performers like Mickelson and Allenby right in the hunt.
01.30  Daly retires from golf?
The News
Following his second missed cut in as many PGA starts this season, John Daly told reporters at the Farmers Insurance Open that he is done with golf, according to the Associated Press. "I'm done... I can't compete... Just can't play like I used to."

Our View
Daly carded a round of 71 at Torrey Pines and missed the cut line by nine strokes. This is the second time in six months that Daly as supposedly retired (having threatened to quit after carding a round of 88 at the Buick Open last season).
