|

The News
The Red Sox have claimed pitcher Robert Manuel off waivers from the Mariners, according to the Boston Globe. Our View Manuel did not allow any runs over 4.1 innings of relief with the Reds in 2009, and had one walk and two strikeouts. The Red Sox have a well-stocked bullpen, but the 26-year-old right-hander should be given a shot to compete for a job in spring training. |
|

The News
The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated pitcher Jeff Karstens for assignment, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Karstens was 4-6 with a 5.42 ERA in 39 appearances (13 starts) last season. Our View It looks like Karstens isn't in the future plans for the Pirates next season, which is a bit of a surprise. |

The Mariners remain interested in acquiring Tigers' starting pitcher Edwin Jackson, according to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated. Our View Jackson is due a raise from his $2.3 million 2009 salary, and the Tigers don't seem willing to pay it. With the Mariners more competitive than expected in 2009, they could be going for it in 2010. Pitching in Seattle's very spacious Safeco Park, much like Detroit's Comerica Park, Jackson could have another big season were he to be shipped to the Northwest. |

|

|

|

Giants:
Pierce out indefinitely with bulging disk
The News
The New York Giants have announced that linebacker Antonio Pierce will be out indefinitely with a bulging disk in his neck, according to the Twitter page of beat writer Ralph Vacchiano. Our View Bad news here for the Giants, as Pierce is one of their best defenders. He has 55 tackles, one sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery this season, so his loss is huge for a team that has struggled a bit on defense as of late. IDP owners will want to find a replacement, as it sounds like Pierce could be done for awhile. |

Our View According to Harig, the revisions reads as follows: Any former Open winner who finishes among the top 10 and ties will be exempt for the following five years. Watson lost via playoff holes to Stewart Cink this season, giving him full exemption into the Open Championship through 2014. His last Open win came in 1983. |

Duval turns to Q School
The News
David Duval, facing the likely loss of his PGA Tour card for next season, reports he will be attending the PGA National Qualifying Tournament next week, according to the Associated Press. Our View Duval entered this final week of the PGA regular season ranked 125th on the Tour's money leaders list, the last spot granted full playing status for the following season. After missing the cut at the Children's Miracle Network Classic Duval is projected to fall to 131st, and thus he will only be granted entry into approximately one dozen tourneys as a member of the top 150. Duval is hoping to improve that status by performing well at Q School, though he is likely to find support via sponsor exemptions that will raise the number of tourneys he might find next season. |

Rose takes early lead at Children's Miracle Classic
The News
Justin Rose carded a round of 65 (-7) in today's opening round at the Children's Miracle Network Classic, holding a slight lead over upstart Rickie Fowler, according to Bob Harig with ESPN. Our View Rose failed to find a single bogey on the day despite inclimate conditions (rain). Fowler, Greg Owen, and Casey Wittenberg are one stroke back of the lead. We noted a strong history of performance for Rose at this event but worried his struggles this season would override the effort. Thus far we are being proven wrong, but it is one day. We will see if Rose can maintain (and possibly improve) on Friday. |

PGA passing on comeback player award
The News
For the first time since 1991, the PGA Tour has decided to withhold nominations and will not award the comeback player of the year for this season, according to Bob Harig with ESPN. Our View The Tour reports they feel no golfer has proven worthy of the award, typically presented to a player returning from illness or injury. Steve Stricker has won this award in consecutive seasons before but this season the Tour failed to identify a player worthy of the accolades (though we would ask why Paul Goydos and Phil Mickelson were not given due consideration, both having faced immense personal stress in their private lives early in the season only to rebound for tremendous second-half surges). |

Marino calls it a season one week early
The News
In checking the latest field updates for the final PGA tourney of the season, the Children's Miracle Network Classic, we find Stephen Marino (listed as one of our players to target for the week) is not longer included in the field, indicating he has likely filed for early withdrawal, according to PGATour.com. Our View Marino has enjoyed a wonderful season and is quickly earning respect as one of the best young fantasy commodities on the market. Scott contemplates leaving Euro Tour
The News
Adam Scott reports he is considering a decision to relinquish hi membership on the European Tour should league officials decide to increase the minimum number of tournament starts required to maintain privelege, according to the Associated Press. Our View Scott notes the ability to compete at a high level on both tours is becoming almost impossible, and the powers that rule both the PGA and Euorpean Tours are so strong that he feels a dedication to one or the other would be necessary to achieve goals as a professional golfer. The European Tour is considering a rise in the number of tourney starts necessary to maintain membership in an effort to strength the dedication from these golfers to their league. That decision is expected to arrive in the next two weeks. |

Taylor files for early withdrawal at Children's Miracle
The News
In reviewing the official field for this week's Children's Miracle Network Classic, it is found that Vaughn Taylor, originally listed as a participant for the event, is no longer found as a member of the field, according to PGATour.com. Our View Taylor isn't sitting in position to fall out of the Tour's top 125 money leaders (currently ranked 75th) and thus has nothing to risk losing by taking the week off. If our notes are correct, Jason Gore should be taking his place in the field, originally listed as the first alternate in the field. |

Mickelson emerges victorious at HSBC Champions
The News
Before this season the HSBC Champions had witnessed only two of the 54-hole leaders move on to win the entire tourney, one of those being Phil Mickelson from 2007. Lefty was in the top spot entering the final round again this season and once again he made good on the opportunity, carding a round or 69 (-3) to secure the third international victory of his career, according to PGATour.com. Our View Several of the world's best, including Ernie Els, Rory McIlroy, Nick Watney, Tiger Woods, Martin Kaymer, and Lee Westwood all gave chase but none were able to catch the only golfer posting scores under 70 in all four rounds (69-66-67-69). This is the 40th victory of Mickelson's career as he becomes the first two-time winner at the HSBC Champions. In their last five meetings, Mickelson has topped Tiger Woods in all but one that put the world's top-ranked duffers in the same pair. Lefty is just the fourth player in WGC history to win multiple events (Tiger, Darren Clarke, Geoff Ogilvy). He and Tiger are the only golfers to ever win two WGC events in the same season. |
