Nicklas Lidstrom chipped in a pair of assists in Thursday's 5-2 win over the Kings at Joe Louis Arena. He was named the First Star of the game.

Our View:Lidstrom scored the 1,000th point of his career tonight, and became the first European-born defenseman to do so. The loyal home fans gave the 39-year-old vet a standing ovation after reaching the milestone.

The Detroit News is reporting that Red Wings' coach Mike Babcock will be named the head coach of Team Canada for the 2010 Olympic games in Vancouver. The official announcement is expected at a press conference on Thursday.

Our View:Babcock has been the front-runner for awhile now, and his back-to-back trips to the Stanley Cups Finals certainly helped his resume. He obviously knows how to win, and maybe more importantly, he knows how to handle great talent, so he seems like the perfect man for the job.

The Detroit Free Press is reporting that the injury that sidelined Red Wings' defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom for two games in the Western Conference Finals resulted from surgery on his testicles after getting speared by Chicago's Patrick Sharp in Game 3. Lidstrom is not expected to need any further surgery in the offseason.

Our View:There had been no indication during the playoffs that Lidstrom had surgery, but apparently he tried to play through the pain and was unable. He is expected to be fine this summer, but he will be cautions with the injury, as anything in the testicle region is something you don't want to mess around with.
