Updating a previous report, Avalanche great Joe Sakic has officially announced his retirement from the NHL, according to the Toronto Star. Sakic played 20 years in the league and finished as the eighth leading scorer in league history. He also won two Stanley Cups with the Avs and made 13 All-Star games.

Our View:Sakic is one of the all-time greats in the game, and he will be missed terribly by everyone who enjoys the NHL. He is a sure-fire Hall of Famer, and will go down in history as one of the greatest of all time.

Joe Sakic is ready to hang up his skates after 20 seasons in the NHL, according to the Associated Press. He is expected to announce his retirement Thursday.

Our View:Sakic hoisted the Stanley Cup twice with the Avalanche, and was a 13-time All-Star. He leaves the NHL with 625 goals and 1,016 assists over 1,378 games.

According to the Denver Post, Avalanche center Joe Sakic has been invited to attend Team Canada's Olympic orientation. This could indicate that Sakic plans to return for another season with the Avs.

Our View:It may be reading too much into this, but why would they send him an invitation if he was going to retire? Add to that the fact that he has already informed the Avs' front office of his decision, and it seems like a real possibility he returns. Expect an announcement either way in the next week or so.

According to the Denver Post, franchise superstar Joe Sakic will make a decision in the next two weeks about whether he will hang up the skates or pursue another NHL season.

Our View:Sakic, a surefire Hall of Famer, says he's feeling good lately and has been working out regularly this offseason. It looks as if he's leaning towards coming back for another season, and if he can avoid serious injury he will be a worthy fantasy player.

According to the Denver Post, the Colorado Avalanche hosted Swedish goaltender Jonas Gustavsson for his visit to Denver. The Avalanche are one of four teams courting the 24-year-old netminder, but Colorado went first class with the visit in hopes that Gustavsson will sign with them. He has other visits scheduled for San Jose, Dallas, and Toronto.

Our View:Many pundits believe Gustavsson is the best goaltender in the world not playing in the NHL right now, and it looks to be a four horse race for his services. The early leader in the clubhouse seems to be the Maple Leafs, but Colorado will do what they can to intice him since they are desperate for help in net. Gustavsson will play in the NHL/AHL next season, now it's just a matter of for whom.

TSN reports that former assistant GM Greg Sherman has been named General Manager of the Avalanche.

Our View:This move is just one of many today with the Avs firing coach Tony Granato and five other staff members. Sherman served as the team's assistant Gm for seven years.

According to Avalanche.nhl.com, the Avalanche have fired coach Tony Granato.

Our View:The Avs ripped through their coaching staff and front office, laying off six staff members in total. Besides Granato assistant coaches Jacques Cloutier and Dave Barr, goaltending coach Jeff Hackett, assistant GM Michel Goulet and video coordinator PJ DeLuca were all given the ax.

Joe Sakic will visit a doctor today to see if he can play in one of Colorado's two weekend games, according to the Denver Post. He has been recovering from a herniated disc in his back, and three broken fingers.

Our View:He will miss tonight's game against Dallas, but the doctor will decide whether he will be able to return Saturday against Vancouver or in Sunday's regular season finale with St. Louis.

Joe Sakic is on track to return to the Avalanche in March, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Sakic would be an instant boost to the Avs offense if he can play even close to his normal ability. His fantasy value will be determined by how much ice time he is able to handle at this point of his career.

According to the Rocky Mountain News, forward Joe Sakic fully expects to play this season after undergoing back surgery and sustaining an injury to his hand from an incident with a snowblower.

Our View:Limited to 15 games this season, the 39-year-old veteran would be welcomed back to the Colorado offense as the team attempts to capture one of the Western Conference's final playoffs spots. Though he doesn't possess the same scoring touch he used to have, Sakic has shown he still has the ability to make players around him better.

Joe Sakic will likely miss the next 10 weeks of action after undergoing surgery for his injured back, according to NHL.com. "I understand that this was the best way for me to return to the ice, so now my focus and goal will be to get back as soon as possible to help my teammates in the final weeks of the season," Sakic said in a statement.

Our View:Sakic still has plenty of skill, he produced 12 points in 15 games before being forced out of the lineup, but it remains to be seen if the Avalanche will be able to win enough games to remain in the playoff hunt until Sakic is healthy enough to return.
