Newsbreakers
November 19, 2009
Jonas Gustavsson allowed five goals on 45 shots Thursday as the Leafs fell to the Canes 6-5 in a shootout. Gustavsson is 3-4-4 for the team on the season.

Our View:The Monster didn't get any help from his defense tonight, as the Canes just kept coming throughout the entire game. Five goals isn't a good night, but he still made 40 saves, so it wasn't a total disappointment.
November 10, 2009
Jonas Gustavsson has taken over as the Maple Leafs' number one goalie, according to the Toronto Star.

Our View:He made Vesa Toskala his back-up by stopping 59-of-62 shots in Toronto's first pair of back-to-back victories over the weekend. Barring a meltdown, the Leafs' high-priced trophy does not seem likely to cede the job back to Toskala any time soon.
November 7, 2009
Jonas Gustavsson was masterful again on Saturday as the Leafs handled the Red Wings with a 5-1 win. Gustavsson stopped 35 of the 36 shots he faced in the win.

Our View:The Monster is living up to the hype, as he has faced 36 shots in each of the last two games and has allowed only three goals. He has assumed the starting job sooner than expected, and he is good enough to have a fine fantasy season despite playing for the Leafs.
November 7, 2009
Jonas Gustavsson is likely to be the Maple Leafs' starting goalie on Saturday, according to team beat reporter Jonas Siegel. This would mark the first time he has started on back-to-back days in his young NHL career.

Our View:The Monster saved 34-of-36 shots on Friday, but faces a very stiff test in the form of the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday. Tonight would be his third straight start over Vesa Toskala.
October 30, 2009
Despite Vesa Toskala being declared healthy, Jonas Gustavsson will start in goal for the 1-7-2 Maple Leafs on Friday, according to the Toronto Sun.

Our View:Gustavsson has been far from stellar this season, getting lit up to the tune of a 3.29 goals against average in four games (three starts), but he's obviously the Leafs' goalie of the future, and there's no point in not testing him early. Toskala isn't going to be taking them anywhere this season.
October 28, 2009
Jonas Gustavsson only stopped 32-of-36 shots in tonight's 4-3 OT loss at Dallas.

Our View:The young netminder allowed three or more goals in three of his four outings (three starts) this season, and only has one win.
October 27, 2009
Jonas Gustavsson picked up his first NHL win on Monday as the Leafs thrashed the Ducks by a score of 6-3. Gustavsson stopped 25 of the 28 shots he faced in the game.

Our View:Monster might have allowed three goals tonight, but he also made several timely saves to keep his team in the lead. This was undoubtedly the first of what will be many NHL wins for the Monster, and it looks like he will be the main man going forward.
October 26, 2009
Maple Leafs' rookie goalie Jonas Gustavsson is starting in net for Toronto against the Ducks on Monday, according to SLAM! Sports. Gustavsson has been out for the last two weeks with a groin injury.

Our View:The Monster looks to finally be 100 percent, and tonight could be the first step in his quest to become the team's starting goaltender. He is good enough, but he will need to prove he can stay healthy if he wants to be the everyday guy.
October 26, 2009
As has been speculated, Jonas Gustavsson (groin) is expected to return to the Maple Leafs and start in goal on Monday night, according to the Toronto Sun.

Our View:The situation is dire in Toronto, where the Leafs remain the NHL's only winless team at 0-7-1. If their big offseason acquisition can play at or near the level many think possible of a man nicknamed "the Monster," it could provide a nice silver-lining in what is obviously going to be a long season.
October 22, 2009
The Maple Leafs are hopeful that Jonas Gustavsson (groin) will be able to start in goal on Monday when they play Anaheim, according to the Toronto Sun.

Our View:The Monster hasn't played since October 6, but is progressing very well in his injury recovery. Vesa Toskala is also close to rejoining the team.
October 19, 2009
Leafs' rookie goaltender Jonas Gustavsson returned to the ice in full pads on Monday, according to the Toronto Star. Gustavsson is expected to practice fully later in the week, and should travel with the team this weekend.

Our View:The Monster said his groin felt fine today, and it looks like he will start next Monday against he Ducks. Monster should be able to establish himself as the team's number one, and his fantasy value should be solid as long as he stays healthy.
October 18, 2009
The Maple Leafs are targeting October 26 as Jonas Gustavsson's return date from a groin injury, according to the Toronto Star.

Our View:The Monster's injury has caused him to miss a huge opportunity to establish himself as the team's starting netminder as Vesa Toskala has struggled with injury and ineffectiveness. Hopefully he won't be out any longer than the team's desired return date. Stay tuned.
October 16, 2009
The Toronto Sun is reporting that Leafs' rookie goaltender Jonas Gustavsson has eyed October 24 as his potential return date. Gustavsson has missed time over the last few weeks with a groin injury.

Our View:The leafs desperately need the Monster to get back in net, because Vesa Toskala has imploded already this season. Joey MacDonald is starting now with Toskala sidelined by injury as well, so expect Monster to be the regular in Toronto very soon, assuming he can stay healthy. Fantasy owners might want to give him a look if he is available in your league, as he could be a nice value coming off injury.
October 14, 2009
Dealing with a minor groin injury, Jonas Gustavsson will begin skating on Wednesday, according to the Toronto Star.

Our View:He's not quite ready to resume practicing yet, but will be shortly. With starting Leafs goalie Vesa Toskala getting routinely battered this season, Gustavsson will likely soon get an extended chance to nail down Toronto's number one goaltender job.
October 8, 2009
Updating a previous report, the Toronto Maple Leafs have placed goaltender Jonas Gustavsson on injured reserve with his groin injury, according to the Toronto Star. The team called up Joey McDonald from the AHL to serve as the backup to Vesa Toskala while Gustavsson is out.

Our View:Apparently the injury is a bit more severe than the team originally let on, because it was thought that Monster would be back on the ice today. The team expects him to be out at least a week, so his quest to unseat Toskala will have to be put on hold for the time being.
October 8, 2009
The Toronto Star is reporting that Maple Leafs' goalie Jonas Gustavsson missed practice on Wednesday with a minor groin injury. Gustavsson is expected to return to the ice on Thursday.

Our View:Apparently the Monster has been dealing with tightness in his groin for a couple of weeks, so the team wanted to shut him down after making his first NHL start on Tuesday night. He should be fine going forward, and while his fantasy value isn't great right now, he still looks poised to take the starting job from Vesa Toskala at some point this season.
October 6, 2009
Jonas Gustavsson stopped 26-of-28 shots in tonight's 2-1 loss to the Senators at the Air Canada Centre.

Our View:Gustavsson had a nice outing between the pipes, but was forced to take a loss as his teammates were shut down by opposing goalie Pascal Leclaire. Gustavsson will push Vesa Toskala for starts if he continues to perform well.
October 6, 2009
Jonas Gustavsson is set for his first NHL start on Tuesday night, according to the Toronto Star.

Our View:It will come against the Ottawa Senators. "The Monster" looked great in the preseason, though he did allow three goals on only 19 shots in relief of Vesa Toskala against the Capitals on Saturday. For now, he's not a great fantasy option, but it still seems likely that he will supplant Toskala at some point this season as the Leafs starter.
October 4, 2009
The Toronto Star is reporting that the Leafs will consider replacing starting goaltender Vesa Toskala with rookie Jonas Gustavsson if Toskala continues to struggle. Gustavsson replaced Toskala in net in the Maple Leafs' loss to the Caps.

Our View:Toskala has been awful in two games this season, allowing seven goals on 35 shots. The team will likely try to ease the Monster into the everyday job, but expect him to take over at some point this season.
September 27, 2009
Jonas Gustavsson stopped all 16 shots he faced in two periods of preseason action on Saturday, according to the Toronto Star.

Our View:The Monster has yet to be scored on in three periods so far this preseason, and could very quickly supplant Vesa Toskala as the Leafs' starting goalie. Gustavsson is worth a mid-round flier, while Toskala has to be considered a very risky pick at this point.
September 16, 2009
TSN is reporting that Maple Leafs' rookie goaltender Jonas Gustavsson had a minor heart procedure performed on Tuesday. Gustavsson is only expected to miss a few days from the procedure that helps restore the heart to a correct beat.

Our View:This procedure is fairly common for athletes, so it isn't anything to be concerned about. Monster still figures to be the backup to start the season in Toronto, but if he adjusts to the league quickly he could find himself as the starter before long.
September 13, 2009
Maple Leafs' rookie goalie Jonas Gustavsson was taken to the hospital on Friday ater suffering from dehydration during the team's physical testing, according to the Toronto Star. Gustavsson was released and is expected to be fine.

Our View:The Monster didn't eat before practice yeterday, and he paid for it later. GM Brian Burke said this kind of thing happens to a few guys every year, so this is nothing to worry about.
September 7, 2009
Jonas Gustavsson saved 35 of the 36 shots he faced in the Maple Leafs' rookie scrimmage against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday, according to the Toronto Star. Gustavsson is expected to be the team's backup to Vesa Toskala this season.

Our View:The Monster certainly looked the part on Sunday night, albeit against a group of rookies. He will go through an adjustment period as he transitions to the NHL, but the kid looks to have a bright future in the league. He should take some time away from Toskala this season.
July 7, 2009
According to a report at Sportsnet.ca, Swedish goalie Jonas Gustavsson has decided to sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs for the 2009-2010 season. Gustavsson agreed to a one-year, $900,000 deal to start the season backing up starter Vesa Toskala.

Our View:The Monster has finally made a decision, and he has put himself in a pretty solid situation. He will get the opportunity to work with a very good goaltender coach in Toronto, and he should get some opportunity to play, considering Toskala isn't exactly Patrick Roy. The Monster will have very little fantasy value, but if he can take over as the starter at some point this year he could be a nice pickup.
June 30, 2009
TSN.ca is reporting that Swedish goalie Jonas Gustavsson will not make a decision on his NHL future until after free agency opens on Wednesday. Gustavsson had originally set a deadline of June 30 to make his choice, but it has been pushed back due to the passing of his mother.

Our View:The Monster was expected to announce today who he was going to sign with, but apparently he has decided to wait. It appears as if it will be either Toronto or Dallas, but Colorado and San Jose remain dark horses.
