Newsbreakers
March 28, 2010
Rick DiPietro (knee) will not tend goal for the Islanders again this season, according to Newsday.

Our View:Another sad chapter in the increasingly sad career of DiPietro. While anything is possibly, the odds of his left knee ever being 100 percent again seem very faint. The 15-year deal the Islanders gave him last decade is increasingly looking like one of the worst in sports history.

Rick DiPietro will be out at least the next few games for the Islanders as he deals with a left knee injury, according the Newsday.

Our View:DiPietro has played well when he's been on the ice this season but has struggled to stay healthy. Look for Dwayne Roloson to get the call between the pipes in the meantime, with Martin Biron serving as his backup.
February 13, 2010
Out Saturday with the flu, Rick DiPietro will be unavailable on Sunday, as well, according to Newsday.

Our View:The silver-lining for DiPietro owners is that this is an injury we know the ever-fragile goalie can get over soon. Look for him to be good to go after the league's Olympic break.
February 6, 2010
Rick DiPietro is likely to be in goal for the Islanders on Saturday, according to Newsday.

Our View:In seven games (six starts) since returning from his knee injury last month, DiPietro is 2-4-0 with a mediocre .903 save percentage.
January 31, 2010
Rick DiPietro stopped 23 of the 25 shots he faced on Sunday, but the Islanders couldn't muster any offense in a 2-0 loss to the Panthers.

Our View:DiPietro has played in just seven games this season due to injury, and has only won two games in the process. Still he's more talented than Dwayne Roloson and will likely overtake the starting gig at some point this season.
January 28, 2010
Rick DiPietro will be in goal for the Islanders on Thursday night, according to AOL FanHouse.

Our View:It will be his first start in five days, though he did give up three goals in two periods of relief of Dwayne Roloson on Tuesday night. Expect him to overtake Roloson sooner rather than later for the team's number one job.
January 18, 2010
Rick DiPietro rejected all 20 shots fired in his direction in today's 4-0 home win over the Devils.

Our View:DiPietro earned a win in back-to-back starts, and collected his first shutout of the season. He looks good following his long recovery from knee surgery, and his fantasy stock in back on the rise.
January 16, 2010
Rick DiPietro turned away 31-of-33 shots in tonight's 3-2 shootout win over the Sabres. He was named the First Star of the game.

Our View:DiPietro performed well and earned his first win of the season following his long recovery from knee surgery. His fantasy stock should start to go back up.
January 16, 2010
Updating an earlier item, Rick DiPietro has been officially named the Islanders starter in goal on Saturday, according to Newsday.

Our View:It will be his first start at home since December 26, 2008. Expect his starts to pick up greatly in frequency in the coming weeks.
January 16, 2010
Rick DiPietro will almost surely make his second start of the season on Saturday, according to the New York Post.

Our View:DiPietro, who allowed four goals in his first start since January 2009 on January 8, will be facing the Sabres. If his outing goes well, he will likely begin starting much more often before eventually reclaiming his starting job from Dwayne Roloson.
January 15, 2010
Rick DiPietro will likely make his second start of the season on Saturday, according to Newsday.

Our View:The rehabbing franchise goalie for the Isles will be starting for the first time since January 8. He allowed four goals to the Stars in that game. For the very immediate future, Dwayne Roloson is still the man in New York. However, it's hard to believe DiPietro won't be getting the bulk of the team's starts before too long. Stay tuned.
January 8, 2010
Rick DiPietro will start for the Islanders tonight, according to NHL.com.

Our View:With the start, DiPietro will see his first NHL action in over a year, as his last start came on Jan. 2, 2009. Fantasy owners might be best to take a wait-and-see approach with DiPietro for now, though he could make sense as a handcuff to Dwayne Roloson owners.
January 6, 2010
Rick DiPietro, who will be active on Wednesday night for the first time in over a year, will serve as Dwayne Roloson's back-up, according to TSN's Darren Dreger.

Our View:Don't expect him to start too many of the Islanders' next few games, as he will be worked back into the lineup gradually. But remember, it's not "if," but "when" New York's franchise player will re-take his old starting job.
January 5, 2010
Rick DiPietro could start for the Islanders in one of the team's three games this week, according to Newsday.

Our View:New York is facing Colorado on Wednesday, Dallas on Thursday and Phoenix on Saturday. DiPietro's workload will certainly be limited for the time being, but if he can stay healthy, he will eventually be the better own between him and Dwayne Roloson.
January 4, 2010
Rick DiPietro (recovery from knee surgery) has completed his conditioning stint with Bridgeport of the AHL, and been recalled to the New York Islanders, according to Newsday.

Our View:He apparently felt no ill-effects after starting twice in three days, and is practicing with New York on Monday. While he will obviously not immediately take over as New York's everyday goalie, the status of Dwayne Roloson going forward this season is officially clouded. If you are desperate for goaltending help and DiPietro is available, snatch him up.
January 3, 2010
Rick DiPietro (knee) will make his second rehab start in three days with AHL Bridgeport on Sunday, according to Newsday.

Our View:If he can somehow survive the game without suffering a setback, he could be ready to return to the Islanders lineup within the next 7-to-10 days. Consider that a massive "if." That being said, if you are a Dwayne Roloson owner, DiPietro could soon be a necessary add.
January 1, 2010
Rick DiPietro will make another rehab start with AHL Bridgeport on Friday, according to the New York Post.

Our View:It's the latest step in his never-ending rehab from his knee woes. He was removed from his last start with Bridgeport on December 11 after experiencing stiffness in his leg that was "unrelated to the knee injury that has kept him out of action since last season." Sure. He last played for New York on January 2, 2009.
