NFL.com reports that Tedy Bruschi has decided to retire from football. He will make an official announcement on Monday morning.

Our View:Bruschi had been contemplating this decision most of the offseason, and with his playing time decreasing the past couple of seasons, the 13-year career Patriot has decided to hang up his pads. The fan favorite linebacker amassed 30.5 career sacks and 12 picks, had five 100-plus tackle seasons and was a Pro Bowler in 2004. He appeared in a franchise record 22 playoff games and captained three Super Bowl winning teams. He won't make the hall, but the Pats will almost certainly elect him into their ring of honor.

Tedy Bruschi is uncertain if he will extend his NFL career beyond the 2009 campaign, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:The 36-year-old vet has seen less action with the Patriots over the past few seasons, and missed three games in 2008 due to injuries. He has not reached 100 or more tackles since 2006.

The Patriots have signed undrafted linebacker Antonio Appleby (Virginia), according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Appleby has good size (6-3 242 pounds) and is a very good athlete, but went undrafted due to a lack of mental toughness and poor instincts. He will compete for a backup job at inside linebacker.

Tedy Bruschi would like to honor the final year of his contract and return to the Patriots in 2009, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:The 35-year-old vet missed the final three games of the season due to a knee injury (MCL), but stated he does not need surgery and there is belief he could have played if the Patriots made the playoffs. He would be returning for a 14th NFL campaign if the club wants him back.
