Newsbreakers
August 21, 2009
ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting on his Twitter page that Bills' first-round pick Aaron Maybin will sign a five-year contract with the team on Friday. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Our View:Maybin's holdout lasted 26 days, and when he does sign today there will only be two remaining unsigned picks: Andre Smith of the Bengals and Michael Crabtree of the 49ers. Maybin has missed valuable camp time, but now that he is in he should have a chance to contribute early in the season.

Aaron Maybin's holdout has now reached 26 days, according to the Buffalo News.

Our View:Maybin's agent and the Bills are not believed to be close to a deal, and his odds of being able to contribute in Week 1 against the division rival Patriots decreases with every day that he is unsigned and away from the team.
August 18, 2009
Contract talks between the Bills and rookie Aaron Maybin's rep have reportedly broken down, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:The Bills did not comment exactly how far apart they are in negotiations, but there is belief that they are growing concerned that Maybin may not be signed in time to contribute in Week 1 at New England.
August 14, 2009
Aaron Maybin is reportedly nearing a deal with the Bills, according to Matt Maiocco's (Santa Rosa Press-Democrat) twitter page. He may sign by the end of the weekend.

Our View:The first-round pick needs work at defending the run and shedding blocks, and is missing valuable time in training camp while a holdout. His instincts need refinement as well.

The Buffalo News is reporting that the Bills are moving closer to signing first-round pick Aaron Maybin. Both sides have been talking, and the team hopes they can get the deal done this week so Maybin can play in the final three preseason games.

Our View:The Bills haven't really been close to a deal with Maybin yet, so this has to be a good sign. As long as the two sides keep talking, look for something to get done in the coming days. The holdout will likely hurt Maybin's chances of making an instant impact on the team.
August 10, 2009
According to the Buffalo News, Bills' first-round pick Aaron Maybin is not close to signing a contract with the team. Maybin has missed all of training camp due to the holdout, and it doesn't look like he will join the team anytime soon.

Our View:Once again, all rookie contract issue go back to Michael Crabtree, and this one is no different. Maybin is likely waiting to see what Crabtree gets as the tenth pick before he signs as the 11th pick. This one could be long and get ugly before it's all said and done.
July 23, 2009
NFL.com reports that the Bills have yet to "begin any real talks" with first-round pick Aaron Maybin. There is a strong possibility that he will not be signed before the team's training camp opens.

Our View:The defensive end holds a lot of upside, but he's really hurting his chances of contributing much this season with a holdout.
July 14, 2009
First-round pick Aaron Maybin's agent is "working hard" to get his client inked with the Bills before the start of training camp, according to Ross Tucker's twitter page.

Our View:The Bills feel that Maybin may be a bit undersized to hold up effectively at defensive end, so he is going to get some reps at linebacker, likely as a pass rusher.
July 11, 2009
Rookie Aaron Maybin could play at outside linebacker for the Bills in 2009 if he proves to be too light to play defensive end, according to FoxSports.com.

Our View:Bills coaches seem to think their number one draft pick might be undersized for DE, so it might not be a good idea to gamble and draft him as such. He is a tremendous athlete, but it sounds like he could go through some serious position limbo in '09, so a wait-and-see approach should be taken.
July 3, 2009
According to a report on BuffaloBills.com, rookie defensive end Aaron Maybin has a realistic chance to start for the team this season. If Maybin shows he can be effective against the run, he seems to have an excellent chance to win the job.

Our View:Even if he isn't on the field for every down in the beginning of the season, he should be a situational pass rusher at worst this year. He is an exceptional pass rusher, and he could hold some value in IDP leagues, especially if he wins the job.

The Buffalo Bills selected Penn State defensive end Aaron Maybin with the eleventh overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft.

Our View:Defensive end Aaron Schobel turns 32 prior to the season, and he missed 11 games last year with a Lisfranc foot injury. There are no guarantees that Schobel will return to previous form, making Maybin, who is more of a pass rusher, than run stopper a good fit in this slot.
April 22, 2009
Lindsay H. Jones of the Denver Post believes the Broncos may target a hybrid linebacker in the first round of the draft to improve their pass rush.

Our View:Brian Orakpo (Texas) and Aaron Maybin (Penn State) are the top two prospects that fit the description as hybrids. Orakpo may be gone by pick No. 12, but Maybin should still be on the board. The Broncos also have pick No. 18 (acquired from Chicago), and could use it to address their other needs at running back or in the secondary.
April 20, 2009
The Mercury News believes the 49ers' top priority is to land a pass rusher in the draft.

Our View:The 49ers have more pressing needs along the offensive line and at quarterback and wide receiver, but defensive end Aaron Maybin (Penn State) or Everette Brown (Florida State) could be among their targets if they do in fact address their need for a pass rusher at pick No. 10 in the first round of the draft.
April 16, 2009
According to the Washington Post, the stock of Penn State's Aaron Maybin is rising and he is drawing some interest from teams in the top half of the first round.

Our View:It is unlikely that Maybin falls past Denver at 12, and he could possibly go sooner than that depending on how things happen in front of that pick. He is expected to be a strong pass rusher at the NFL level, and could be a nice upgrade for several teams drafting in the middle of the first.
April 14, 2009
Aaron Maybin (Penn State) is scheduled to visit the Ravens today, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:Maybin has potential to develop into a strong pass rusher, and is projected to be a top-15 draft pick. He will likely be off the board by the time the Ravens pick at No. 26 in the first round. The Ravens could address their need at cornerback with that pick.
April 9, 2009
Aaron Maybin (Penn State) is visiting the 49ers, according to the Sacramento Bee.

Our View:The 49ers need help with pressuring the quarterback, and Maybin has great potential as a pass-rusher. But he could struggle against the run in the NFL as he lacks strength. The 49ers could also consider him as a rush linebacker in their 3-4 defense.
