According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, rookie tackle Jason Smith was limited in practice on Wednesday, but is close to returning to action.

Our View:Smith has been out since injuring his knee in Week 2, and Adam Goldberg has been filling in at right tackle in his place. The number-two overall pick will likely be a game-time decision.

According to the team Twitter page, rookie offensive tackle Jason Smith could suit up for the Rams this week against the Vikings. Head coach Steve Spagnuolo said that Smith might be active, but he will not start.

Our View:Smith has missed two games with his knee injury, and this would be an awfully tough task to come back against this Vikings's defense. If he is active, expect limited snaps for Smith and expect Adam Goldberg and Alex barron to play most of the game at the tackle positions.

ESPN.com reports that first-round pick Jason Smith had limited repetitions with the backup unit in Wednesday's practice.

Our View:Smih has been dealing with a bruised left knee that has kept him out the past two games, but he's slowly recovering. He could play as a backup in Week 5, but it seems silly to rush the rookie back against Jared Allen and the Vikings on Sunday.
October 2, 2009
The Rams' official Twitter page is reporting that rookie offensive lineman Jason Smith is being listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the 49ers. Adam Goldberg will start in Smith's place if he can't go.

Our View:Smith most likely won't be playing this weekend, so expect Goldberg to man the right side again on Sunday. Smith should be able to return in another week or two, but don't expect him to go this weekend.

Jason Smith (knee) did not practice on Wedneday, according to Pro Football Talk.

Our View:He missed the team's game against the Packers last weekend with the injury, and isn't looking likely for this Sunday. More bad news if you are one of the unlucky people stuck with a Rams' offensive player.
September 21, 2009
Jason Smith will miss 1-to-2 weeks with a sprained knee, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:He will not need surgery. Adam Goldberg will start in his place against Green Bay this Sunday.
September 20, 2009
Rookie Jason Smith will undergo an MRI on his knee, according to NFL.com. The No. 2 overall pick suffered the injury in the second quarter of Sunday's loss against the Rams and was unable to return.

Our View:Smith has not lived up to his high billing just yet, and the Rams are hoping that he continues to develop into his great potential. However, a knee injury would certainly set him back in his development.

Number two overall draft pick Jason Smith has been declared the Rams' starting right tackle, according to the team.

Our View:He finally "beat out" Adam Goldberg, though he was expected to be the starter all along. A mammoth of a man on the right side, he should be expected to offer great protection for Marc Bulger, and create some nice holes for Steven Jackson.
August 31, 2009
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Rams' first-round pick Jason Smith has been working with the first-team offense since Sunday at right tackle. Smith is trying to beat out Adam Goldberg for the starting job.

Our View:It has been assumed that Smith would be the starter on the right side this season after the team used the number two overall pick on him in the draft, and with just a few weeks remaining before the start of the season, it looks like he may finally move into the role. It is worth noting that Goldberg was starting at guard in place of the injured Richie Incognito, so it is still not a sure thing that Smith will start.

Rookie offensive lineman and number two overall pick Jason Smith has been excelling in the running game this preseason, but struggling with pass protection, according to ESPN.

Our View:Not great news for Marc Bulger, who has been plagued by awful pass protection the past few seasons. It is good news for Steven Jackson, however, and Jackson fantasy owners, as the Rams figure to place a premium on running in 2009.
July 30, 2009
Updating an earlier report, it has been disclosed that Jason Smith inked a five-year deal with the Rams worth $62MM, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:Smith should prove to be worth every penny if he can help fix the Rams' woes along the offensive line. He will compete for a starting gig in training camp.
July 30, 2009
First-round pick Jason Smith has reportedly agreed to a deal with the Rams, according to the Rams' twitter page. The terms of the deal are yet to be disclosed.

Our View:Smith could start at left tackle, depending on how quickly he develops in training camp. He has a bright future ahead of him in the NFL, and was drafted with the No. 2 pick to provide much-needed stability to the Rams' offensive line.
July 30, 2009
The Rams are apparently very close to agreement with Jason Smith, the number two overall pick from last Spring's draft, according to Pro Football Talk.

Our View:With Darrius Heyward-Bey signing earlier today, the pieces of the first round contract puzzle appear to be finally starting to fall in place. Smith will likely play right tackle for the Rams this season, and is the presumed week one starter there.
July 14, 2009
According to a report in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Rams expect first-round pick Jason Smith and second-round pick James Laurinaitis to be signed in time for the start of training camp. Discussions with both players are going well so far.

Our View:The Rams desperately need both players to be in camp on time, since both figure to start for the team when the season begins. It sounds like the team isn't worried about not getting the deals done, so expect both players to be in on time and to contribute this season.
July 2, 2009
According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, first-round draft pick Jason Smith is expected to start on opening day.

Our View:Smith is extremely talented, not to mention the fact that the Rams are paying him a bundle, so it doesn't make sense to sit him. He is slotted at right tackle, but may move around depending on his performance. He was the number-two overall pick in the draft and is expected to be a difference maker in St. Louis this season.

Jason Smith practiced at left tackle on Tuesday, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

Our View:Smith, although drafted to be Orlando Pace's replacement, has been working primarily from the right side this offseason, with Alex Barron getting the nod at left tackle. Now it seems the Rams are shuffling things around and may give the first-round pick at shot to replace Pace after all.
April 30, 2009
NFL.com reports that Jason Smith will work at right tackle at the start of Rams minicamp. Former right tackle Alex Barron will move to the left side.

Our View:Whether or not he sticks there is uncertain, but he had been billed as Orlando Pace's replacement. Pace starred at left tackle for the Rams.
April 25, 2009
The St. Louis Rams selected Baylor offensive tackle Jason Smith with the second overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft.

Our View:The Rams released left tackle Orlando Pace during the offseason, making the selection of Smith a no brainer. The new coaching regime wants to feature Steven Jackson in a run-heavy offense, and Smith is considered the best run-blocking tackle in this class.
April 8, 2009
Jason Smith (Baylor) will visit the Browns next week, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View:Smith would start at right tackle if Cleveland decides to draft with him the fifth overall pick. The team needs to replace Kevin Shaffer at the position.
March 10, 2009
Baylor offensive tackle Jason Smith visited the Lions Monday, according to the Detroit News.

Our View:Smith is a great athlete, but needs work on his technique. If the Lions do not make him the first-overall pick of the draft, the Rams could take him at No. 2, who also need help at tackle.
March 6, 2009
The Rams would like to arrange a private workout with Baylor's Jason Smith, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:Smith is a great athlete, but needs work on his technique. The former tight end should still develop into a solid tackle in the NFL, but may not be ready to step in right away.
February 20, 2009
NFL Network draft expert Mike Mayock rates Jason Smith of Baylor as his best offensive tackle pick of the 2009. Mayock also sees Virginia's Eugene Monroe as a top-10 pick, but he has some concerns about Alabama's Andre Smith and Mississippi's Michael Oher, the Philadelphia Daily News reports.

Our View:Mayock does an excellent job of covering the draft, and we've come to trust and respect his opinion. Most boards have Monroe at the top, and Jason Smith hasn't received as much press as Andre Smith and Oher. He compares him favorably to Broncos tackle Ryan Clady, who was excellent as a rookie. That's high praise.
