Matthew Stafford was limited in today's practice while nursing his ailing knee, according to the Browns' official website.

Our View:Stafford played in Week 10 against Minnesota, and should be ready for Sunday's game against the Browns, who are ranked 19th in pass defense.
November 13, 2009
Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford (knee) was limited again in Friday's practice, but is fully expected to play on Sunday.

Our View:Staford has been limited all week and has a tough task ahead of him, taking on the Vikings, but it appears he will have his number one target back. Calvin Johnson has practiced in full the last three days so should be able to hook up on Sunday. till, Stafford is a dicey fantasy start.
November 12, 2009
Lions' quarterback Matthew Stafford was limited in practice again on Thursday due to his knee injury, according to the team's official website. Stafford is expected to play Sunday.

Our View:Stafford shouldn't have any problem playing this week, but his knee is obviously not 100 percent. The injury isn't serious, but it certainly doesn't help his already limited fantasy value.
November 11, 2009
Matthew Stafford was again limited by his achy knee in Lions practice on Wednesday, according to the team.

Our View:He will play this Sunday, though. Expect Stafford to be limited in practice for much of the rest of the season, but to continue to be active on game days.
November 8, 2009
Matthew Stafford threw for 203 yards and two scores on Sunday, but the Lions rookie quarterback tossed five picks in a 32-20 loss to Seattle.

Our View:Stafford started off with a bang, throwing for two scores in the first quarter, but fell apart as the game progressed. He completed just 22-of-42 passes and now has five touchdowns against 12 interceptions this season.
November 5, 2009
According to the Tacoma News Tribune, Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford was limited in practice on Thursday due to a knee injury.

Our View:Stafford played last week, so there is no reason to expect that he wouldn't take the field on Sunday. The knee is clearly still bothering him though, so he won't be a great fantasy play.
November 4, 2009
Lions' rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford was limited in practice on Wednesday due to his knee injury, according to the team's official website. Stafford is expected to play this week.

Our View:Stafford played last week against the Rams, but the knee is still bothering him a bit. He should be fine to play this week, but don't be shocked if he continues to miss some practice time.
November 3, 2009
Matthew Stafford is not "out of the woods" yet in regards to the knee injury that forced him to miss two games earlier this month, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View:He is back in the lineup, however. For fantasy purposes, his knee is a dead issue. His horrid team? That's another story.
November 2, 2009
mLive.com is reporting that Lions' quarterback Matthew Stafford was ridiculed on the sidelines by Detroit fans during Sunday's loss to the Rams. Stafford responded to the criticism on Monday by saying "they're not going to run me out of town."

Our View:The fans were obviously discouraged that the Lions were losing to the lowly Rams, but it doesn't make sense for them to try to run their franchise quarterback out of town. Stafford has shown plenty of poise this season, so something like this isn't likely to affect him.
November 1, 2009
Matthew Stafford (knee) is active and will start against the St. Louis Rams, according to Adam Schefter's twitter page.

Our View:Stafford, who has three touchdowns against six interceptions on the season, was limited in practice this week and has been out for the last two games. We expect him to be rusty in his first game back, but the Rams defense has been the equivalent of a sieve this year.
October 29, 2009
Although the Lions have not announced who their starting quarterback will be this week, all signs point to rookie Matthew Stafford getting the nod, according to mLive.com. Stafford practiced in full on Thursday, and he looks healthy enough to play this week.

Our View:Stafford has practiced with the team all week, but it looks like coach Jim Schwartz will wait to name his starter until tomorrow. Stafford will have a nice match-up against the Rams, and it also looks like he will have Calvin Johnson back. If you are going to start Stafford, this looks like the week to do it.
October 28, 2009
mLive.com is reporting that Lions' quarterback Matthew Stafford practiced in full for the second straight day on Wednesday. Stafford's status for Sunday against the Rams is still unknown at this point.

Our View:It sure looks like Stafford is going to play Sunday, as he has practice and looked sharp for two straight days. There was some concern that his knee might not respond well after yesterday's workout, but he was back out there today. Owners should expect him to play, but check back before the game to be sure. Calvin Johnson missed again today, so Stafford's value will be hurt if he doesn't have his favorite target.
October 27, 2009
Matthew Stafford (knee) was back at practice on Tuesday, according to MLive.com.

Our View:It's a good first step toward Stafford going against the Rams this weekend. However, the team considers tomorrow the big test, when they check to see whether Stafford's knee swelled up after practicing on it on Tuesday. Stay tuned.
October 26, 2009
Matthew Stafford looks unlikely to return to practice this week, according to ProFootballTalk.com. Stafford is unlikely to play this week when the Lions face the Rams in Detroit.

Our View:The Lions are going to be overly cautious with Stafford's bum knee, and they will not rush him back until he is at 100 percent. Expect him to sit again this week, which should be good news for the Rams, who are still looking for their first win of the season.
October 23, 2009
Matthew Stafford (knee) still has no set date to return to practice, according to the Detroit News.

Our View:He missed practice again on Thursday, but the team remains optimistic that he could return to the practice field next week. He has no game to miss this weekend, however, as the Lions are on a bye.
October 18, 2009
Matthew Stafford will not play in today's game at Green Bay, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View:The rookie quarterback is dealing with a dislocated kneecap, which may require surgery. Daunte Culpepper will start in his place.
October 18, 2009
Matthew Stafford may need to undergo surgery on his ailing knee, according to Brad Biggs of the National Football Post.

Our View:The rookie quarterback is dealing with swelling in his dislocated kneecap, and Dr. James Andrews will evaluate a new MRI Monday. Surgery could be an option to tighten the joint, which could potentially end his 2009 campaign.
October 17, 2009
Matthew Stafford (knee) will be a game-time decision on Sunday, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View:Lions coach Jim Schwartz thinks there is a chance he will play. It still seems unlikely, however, as Detroit surely does not want to take any chances with its franchise player. If he is able to go, he would be a decent play against Green Bay's leaky defense. Daunte Culpepper will get the start if he is out.
October 16, 2009
Lions' quarterback Matthew Stafford missed practice again on Friday, according to mLive.com. Stafford is not expected to play in the team's Week 6 game against the Packers.

Our View:Stafford practice on Wednesday, but he hasn't taken to the field over the past two days. It looks like Daunte Culpepper will start again this week, so adjust your fantasy roster accordingly.
October 15, 2009
MLive.com reports that Matthew Stafford (knee) is unlikely to play in Week 6 against the Packers.

Our View:The rookie quarterback missed Thursday's practice due to his injured right knee and the team doesn't expect him to be ready in time. No official report has been released, but expect to see Daunte Culpepper under center this week. Stafford would likely return after the Lions Week 7 bye.
October 14, 2009
Matthew Stafford practiced with the Lions' first unit on Wednesday, and did not appear to be encumbered by the knee sprain that kept him out in Week 5, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View:Stafford sounds likely to play in Green Bay this Sunday. With the Packers' pass-defense looking very ordinary this season, he could have the best game of his rookie campaign to date.
October 11, 2009
Week 5 inactives: QB Matthew Stafford (3rd), RT Gosder Cherilus, DE Dewayne White, CB Kevin Hobbs, C Dylan Gandy, S Ko Simpson and DL Sammie Hill.

Our View:Daunte Culpepper will start in place of Stafford, who is inactive due to a knee injury. On defense, DE Cliff Avril (hamstring) is active and will be used in the defensive line rotation.
October 9, 2009
According to mLive.com, Lions' quarterback Matthew Stafford returned to practice and went through individual drills on Friday. Stafford is still considered unlikely to play this weekend against the Steelers.

Our View:The team hasn't ruled Stafford out just yet, and the fact that he practiced today gives owners some hope that he might play. We expect him to sit, so if you were relying on him this week you should start looking for another option, but stay tuned for a final decision from the team.
October 8, 2009
mLive.com is reporting that Lions' quarterback Matthew Stafford did not practice again on Thursday. Stafford hasn't been ruled out for Sunday's game, but it looks unlikely that he will play.

Our View:Head coach Jim Schwartz said Stafford could still play if he didn't practice Wednesday or Thursday, but he also said that it is important for a rookie quarterback to get as many reps as possible during the week. The team figures to be overly cautious with their big money rookie, so expect Daunte Culpepper to make the start unless Stafford improves significantly by tomorrow.
October 7, 2009
Matthew Stafford (knee) did not practice on Wednesday, according to MLive.com.

Our View:He has not yet been ruled out for this weekend, but you would have to imagine the rebuilding Lions are going to play it safe with their franchise player, especially considering they are going up against a very physical Pittsburgh defense on Sunday. If you are a Stafford owner, have Daunte Culpepper ready on speed-dial.
October 6, 2009
John Clayton of ESPN expects quarterback Matthew Stafford to be held out of Week 5 against Pittsburgh.

Our View:Stafford is day-to-day with a knee injury, but Clayton suggests that he will be held out as the Lions will be very cautious with their prized rookie. Daunte Culpepper would start in his absence, and still has a good enough arm to get the ball to stud receiver Calvin Johnson.
October 5, 2009
Lions coach Jim Schwartz said on Monday that quarterback Matthew Stafford is "day-to-day" after injuring his knee on Sunday, and that he has not been ruled out for Week 5, according to NFL.com.

Our View:Schwartz did not comment on speculation that Stafford's injury is a dislocated kneecap. He also said the team will know more on Wednesday. It sounds about 50/50 as to whether or not Stafford will go against the Steelers this weekend. Keep Daunte Culpepper ready on the back-burner.
October 4, 2009
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the injury that forced Matthew Stafford from the Lions' loss to the Bears on Sunday was a dislocated knee.

Our View:The knee has already been popped back into place, but the Lions won't know how much time their rookie quarterback will miss, if any, until more tests are conducted on Monday. If you are a Stafford owner, keep Daunte Culpepper on speed-dial.
October 4, 2009
Matthew Stafford was productive in Sunday's 48-24 blowout loss at Chicago, as he completed 24-of-36 passes for 296 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. He also rushed twice for 20 yards.

Our View:Stafford had a good showing for a rookie quarterback in his fourth career start, especially in a tough rivalry game on the road. His status is yet to be updated after exiting with an apparent knee injury late in the game.
October 4, 2009
Matthew Stafford went down in today's game at rival Chicago, according to Adam Schefter's (ESPN) twitter page.

Our View:The prized rookie quarterback reportedly went down clutching his knee. The severity of the injury is yet to be determined.
September 27, 2009
Matthew Stafford completed 21-of-36 passes for 241 yards with one touchdown and no turnovers in the Week 3 win over Washington.

Our View:The Lions snapped a 19-game losing streak dating back to last season, and Stafford notched his first victory as a pro. The rookie also showed a lot of toughness on a 21-yard scamper in the second quarter. We consider Stafford a good buy-low candidate in dynasty leagues, as he has been thrown to the wolves with a very tough first half schedule.
September 20, 2009
Following Sunday's game Lions head coach Jim Schwartz repeated that rookie Matthew Stafford remains the team's starting quarterback, according to MLive.com. Stafford threw for 152 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions against the Vikings in Week 2.

Our View:Stafford hasn't looked like anything special through two games for the Lions. Schwartz felt the need to back him up due to backup quarterback Daunte Culpepper's strong preseason and the Lions current 19-game losing streak.
September 20, 2009
Matthew Stafford struggled in today's 27-13 loss to the Vikings at Ford Field, as he completed 18-of-30 passes for 152 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Our View:While it was nice to witness the rookie's first career touchdown pass (to stud Calvin Johnson), his overall performance was forgettable. He looks to be inconsistent this season while adjusting to the NFL.
September 13, 2009
Quarterback Matthew Stafford completed 16-of-37 passes for 205 yards and three interceptions in the Week 1 loss to New Orleans.

Our View:The Georgia product only completed 43.2 percent of his pass attempts, and most of his success came on check down throws to running back Kevin Smith. The Lions early season schedule is brutal with Minnesota, Washington, @ Chicago and Pittsburgh in the next four weeks. In other words, things could get worse before they get better.
September 7, 2009
ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting on his Twitter page that the Lions have announced that rookie Matthew Stafford will be their starting quarterback this season. Stafford beat out veteran Daunte Culpepper for the job.

Our View:We can't say we are surprised by this decision, as everyone in the Lions' organization has raved about the number one overall pick. He will undoubtedly go through some struggles this season, but it looks like he has a bright NFL future ahead of him.
September 3, 2009
Matthew Stafford finished Thursday's final preseason game 5-for-9 for 81 yards and an interception. Stafford was sacked twice before being replaced by Brooks Bollinger at quarterback.

Our View:Stafford needed a good performance to win the starting job tonight, and he wasn't bad in his limited time. The interception isn't great, but he finished with nine yards per attempt, which is solid. He didn't come out and make the decision for the coaching staff, but me might have been just good enough to get the nod. We will keep you updated.
August 29, 2009
Matthew Stafford fared well in Saturday's 18-17 preseason win over the Colts, as he completed 13-of-19 passes for 160 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. Daunte Culpepper completed 7-of-12 passes for 67 yards, and threw a short touchdown pass to Bryant Johnson.

Our View:This was a good outing, by rookie quarterback standards, and will help Stafford's bid to win the starting job over Culpepper.
August 21, 2009
The Detroit Free Press is reporting that the Lions have not announced who will start at quarterback for the team's preseason game Saturday against the Browns. It seems likely that Matthew Stafford will get the start, with Daunte Culpepper taking over.

Our View:It is irrelevant who starts this weekend, but the big decision will come when coach Jim Schwartz decides who will start in Week 1. We still fully expect Stafford to get the nod unless he really scuffles over the remaining preseason games.
August 17, 2009
According to the Detroit News, the Lions are going to have a tough time keeping rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford out of the starting lineup when the season begins. Stafford showed a level of calmness and poise in his first preseason outing, and he is scheduled to start the team's next preseason game against the Browns.

Our View:It looks like Stafford has all but won the starting gig in Detroit barring a meltdown over the rest of the preseason. Daunte Culpepper will have to significantly outplay Stafford to win the job, and it just doesn't look like that is going to happen. If Stafford continues to impress, he could be a backup quarterback option in fantasy circles, mainly because he will be throwing to Calvin Johnson, a guy who catches everything that is thrown in the same zip code.
August 15, 2009
Matthew Stafford completed 7-of-14 passes for 114 yards in Saturday's 27-26 preseason win over the Falcons. He threw one touchdown pass and one interception. Daunte Culpepper completed 5-of-6 passes for 41 yards.

Our View:This was a decent preseason debut for the No. 1 pick as he competes for the starting gig at quarterback in Detroit.
August 8, 2009
Lions beat writer Tom Kowalski at MLive.com is certain that Matthew Stafford will beat out Daunte Culpepper for the starting quarterback spot this season.

Our View:The two QBs are still splitting reps right down the middle in camp, (both have impressed) but Stafford looks like the real deal and should win the job outright. The Lions haven't weighed in on the situation yet, so things could obviously change.
August 4, 2009
Lions' offensive coordinator Scott Linehan was quoted at mLive.com as saying that coaching Matthew Stafford is not like coaching a normal rookie. "I don't feel like I'm coaching or talking to a rookie when we work with him. That's not just talking and saying 'That's how it is because he's a No. 1 pick.' He has a very natural feel for the game and understands concepts, he can translate things he's done before to what he's doing now without a lot of repetition. He can go right to it and make that decision. He's pretty impressive that way," Linehan said.

Our View:When the coaching staff is talking about Stafford like this, it makes us believe that he will be the starter when Week one opens this season. After last season, the Lions may be better off letting Stafford take over so they can build around him for the future. He is still a high risk fantasy pick, but he could be a name to watch as the season progresses.
June 3, 2009
Updating a previous report, MLive.com is reporting that rookie Matthew Stafford is likely to be the Lions week one starting quarterback.

Our View:People were probably going to gamble and draft Stafford early anyway, but this makes it even more necessary if you were planning on taking him. Barring a disastrous preseason for the overall number one pick, it doesn't look like he will be falling to the bottom rounds.
June 1, 2009
SI.com's Peter King is reporting that incumbent Lions' quarterback Daunte Culpepper will need to be really good to hold off rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford. King believes that Stafford may be the starting quarterback by Halloween, not Thanksgiving.

Our View:The Lions seem to be very impressed with Stafford, which is good considering the boat-load of money they handed to him. Culpepper will start the season as the quarterback, but expect Stafford to take over sooner than later. Stafford could be worth a pickup as a fantasy backup when he becomes the starter, but drafting him seems unnecessary at this point.
May 23, 2009
Lions' defensive end Eric Hicks commented on the development of rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford so far, according to the Detroit News. Hicks said, "He is coming out here and working hard. He is definitely living up to the hype, making good passes and showing his leadership out there with the second group."

Our View:Stafford is expected to serve as the No. 2 quarterback behind Daunte Culpepper for the start of the season, but Stafford will likely step in at some point - especially if the team continues to lose while coming off an 0-16 campaign.
May 5, 2009
The Lions are going to be as patient as possible with Matthew Stafford, playing him only when they think he is ready, according to MLive.com. The team thinks he has the confidence and mental toughness to endure some significant setbacks if he plays as a rookie, but they also want to put him in the best possible position to succeed.

Our View:Isn't this the plan with pretty much any rookie quarterback? What are they supposed to say, that they're going to throw him out there whether he is ready or not? We expect Daunte Culpepper to begin the year as the starter but for Stafford to take over at some point.
May 4, 2009
Matthew Stafford failed to impress the Lions during minicamp as he displayed poor accuracy on his passes, according to MLive.com. Head coach Jim Schwartz said, "He was wild with some throws, but then he started settling into a groove, started working together with some of the wide receivers and then all of the sudden you started seeing some better things later in practice."

Our View:Stafford is new to the NFL, and should fare better heading into training camp and the preseason. The Lions were winless last season, and cannot go anywhere but up in 2009.
April 25, 2009
The 2009 NFL draft has kicked off in New York City, and the Detroit Lions officially selected Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford with the first overall pick.

Our View:Stafford has already inked a six-year, $78 million contract, including $41.7 million in guarantees. The coaching staff has stated that Daunte Culpepper is their starter, but we expect Stafford to push him in training camp. Given the massive contract, we also expect the rookie to be starting by mid-season at the latest.
April 24, 2009
The Detroit Lions reached an agreement with Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford to make him the first pick in the NFL draft on Saturday, according to ESPN.

Our View:Stafford will reportedly receive a six-year, $78 million deal, including $41.7 million in guarantees. The language of the pact must still be agreed upon and approved by the management council.
April 24, 2009
Matthew Stafford (Georgia) addressed the Lions' fans, according to the Detroit Free Press. Stafford said, "I want them to know that I am a down-to-earth guy, and I will do what it takes, no matter what that is. If that is handing the rock off to Kevin Smith 30 times a game and letting the defense (control the game), then I will do that."

Our View:Stafford also noted that he would like to play for head coach Jim Schwartz. It is not set in stone, but Stafford is believed to be the Lions' pick at No. 1 in the draft.
April 22, 2009
The Detroit Free Press reports that report that the Lions have been negotiating a deal for Matthew Stafford over the past two days and are targeting Friday to have an agreement.

Our View:It's looking more and more certain that Stafford will be the No. 1 pick. However, linebacker Aaron Curry is still a possibility.
April 22, 2009
Matthew Stafford is rumored to be nearing a deal with the Lions that will make him the No. 1 pick in the draft, according to the Oakland Press.

Our View:The Lions' top priority is at quarterback, and Daunte Culpepper would serve as his mentor until Stafford is ready to start if the news is true, but the Lions are shooting down the report by the source.
April 17, 2009
The Lions have entered into preliminary contract negotiations with quarterback Matthew Stafford, linebacker Aaron Curry, and offensive tackle Jason Smith, CBSSports.com reports.

Our View:Most experts seem to be pointing to Stafford as the choice, but we'll know soon enough. And then we'll have months and months to react and years and years to dissect the decision. So, really, what's a few more days at this point?
April 17, 2009
Draft expert Mel Kiper expects the Lions to select Matthew Stafford (Georgia) with the No. 1 pick, according to the Detroit News. Kiper said, "To me, it is the obvious pick."

Our View:Although Kiper expects Stafford to go No. 1, he rates Mark Sanchez (USC) higher. The Lions added depth to their receiving corps with Ronald Curry, but they still lack a solid No. 2 target following the departure of Roy Williams to Dallas.
April 13, 2009
Matthew Stafford (Georgia) is expected to visit the 49ers today, according to NFL.com.

Our View:Stafford is viewed as the favorite to go to the Lions with the No. 1 pick in the draft. The 49ers do not pick until 10th.
April 8, 2009
ProFootballTalk.com is hearing that the Lions will make Matthew Stafford (Georgia) the first pick of the 2009 draft.

Our View:This is far from a done deal, but the Lions' top need is at quarterback, and Stafford has the skills and upside to develop into an elite starter.
April 2, 2009
Matthew Stafford is slated to visit the Jets in mid-April, according to Newsday.

Our View:The Jets are in need of a quarterback, but Stafford will be off the board by the time they pick at No. 17, and may go No. 1 to Detroit.
March 31, 2009
The Lions were impressed with Matthew Stafford's private workout at the University of Georgia, according to Sports Illustrated. His audition was reportedly flawless, and he fared better than he did during his March 19 Pro Day workout.

Our View:The Lions praised the way he threw the ball, and left the impression that they will make him the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming draft.
March 26, 2009
The Detroit Free-Press reports that Lions head coach Jim Schwartz pulled no punches when talking about the team's need for a fixture at quarterback. "I think that's paramount," Schwartz said. "We need to find a quarterback. I've been on the record saying quarterback is the most important position on the team. ... We need to be long-term at that position. We need to have a guy that's that guy."

Our View:It's widely assumed that the team will be taking Georgia signal-caller Matthew Stafford with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft, but the team has been quiet on their plans. Still, Schwartz's admission that a long-term fixture at that position is telling.
March 25, 2009
Matthew Stafford was not pleased when the 49ers asked him about his parents' divorce during an interview at the NFL Combine, according to the SF Chronicle. The 49ers reportedly had a psychologist at the session, who asked the question. Coach Mike Singletary said, "If you are gonna look at drafting a guy in the first round and you are gonna pay him millions of dollars and asking him about a divorce, about his parents, if that is gonna be an issue, then you know what? Maybe he does not belong here."

Our View:The 49ers have the 10th pick of the draft, and may not want to take a quarterback that high with more pressing needs, such as at offensive tackle.
March 10, 2009
The Detroit Lions are going to take their time and are not going to rush to decide on their number one selection in the upcoming draft, according to the Associated Press. Matthew Stafford is considered to be on the Lions' short list. He will throw for scouts at his pro day and then work out for the Lions in a private session.

Our View:Stafford would be an excellent selection but the Lions have so many holes to fill it is uncertain what direction the team will go in.
February 25, 2009
Matthew Stafford would like to be selected by the Lions as the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft, according to the Detroit News. The Georgia quarterback said, "I am being completely honest, and it has nothing to do with money -- I would love to go to Detroit. I am a competitive guy. The Lions have passionate fans, a great stadium, and I would be throwing to the biggest freak (Calvin Johnson), with the most talent, of any receiver in the NFL."

Our View:Stafford would potentially have a shot to start as a rookie in Detroit, especially since the club is coming off a winless season.
