Vernon Gholston is doubtful for Sunday's game against Jacksonville due to his strained hamstring, according to NFL.com.

Vernon Gholston did not practice Wednesday after tweaking his left hamstring during Monday's walk-through, according to the Star-Ledger.

Our View:Gholston noted that he will have to wait and see regarding his availability for Sunday's game against Jacksonville. He is yet to record his first sack of 2009, despite playing in one of the most aggressive defenses in the NFL.

Subbing for the suspended Calvin Pace, outside linebacker Vernon Gholston will make his first NFL start this weekend, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:He is reportedly going to be a "significant part of the game plan," though Jamaal Westerman may sub for him on passing downs. The paper expects the Texans to attack Gholston because he "struggles to shed blocks and tends to get caught out of position." Obviously, he has no IDP value at the moment, but it's not inconceivable that he could break out during his sophomore campaign. He is someone to keep an eye on.

According to the New York Post, the Jets believe that linebacker Vernon Gholston will be up to the task of starting the first four games of the season.

Our View:The Jets feel that Gholston has improved after struggling to make an impact last season, and he should excel early on this year starting in place of the recently suspended Calvin Pace. If Gholston embraces his new role he may get an opportunity to stay in the starting lineup even after Pace returns. Last season he had just 13 total tackles.

According to Adam Schefter's Twitter account, Vernon Gholston has not impressed in OTAs so far this offseason.

Our View:Gholston, the Jets' first-round pick in 2008, failed to make an impact last season as a rookie and isn't off to a great start in 2009. The team has said encouraging things about him, but observes of his practices tell a different tale. If anyone can get him going, it's Rex Ryan, but so far Gholston looks far from sharp.

Jets' defensive coordinator Mike Pettine commented on Vernon Gholston, according to the NY Post. Pettine said, "I thought he was a tremendous athlete, but being in shorts is one thing and how it carries over to the field is another. We liked him for sure, but there was a lack of consistency in some of his play. He would have a flash of brilliance for two or three plays, then disappear. From a physical standpoint, he's got all the tools. I'm looking forward to meeting Vernon and seeing what makes him tick. If the guy's got it in him, we're gonna get it out of him."

Our View:Gholston did not make an impact as a rookie in 2008 with only 13 tackles and no sacks, but looks to fare better next season under the direction of Pettine and new head coach Rex Ryan, who was a great defensive coordinator with Baltimore.
January 22, 2009
Jets' head coach Rex Ryan is considering Ken Zampese at offensive coordinator in case Brian Schottenheimer departs, according to the NFL Network.

Our View:The 41-year-old Zampese served as the Bengals' quarterbacks coach in 2008 and has been with the club since 2003.

Rex Ryan has accepted the Jets' offer to be their next head coach, according to ESPN. It is a four-year deal believed to be worth around $11.5 million.

Our View:Ryan, who led the Ravens to the AFC title game as their defensive coordinator, will replace Eric Mangini, who was fired after the Jets collapsed down the stretch and missed the playoffs.
