Newsbreakers
January 6, 2009
The Detroit Lions will interview Dolphins assistant head coach/secondary coach Todd Bowles, and are also interested in San Diego defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, according to MLive.com.

Our View:Rivera was one of the hottest coaching candidates a few years ago after being Chicago's defensive coordinator, but didn't land a job, and subsequently was fired and relegated to coaching linebackers in San Diego before taking over as D-Coordinator.
January 5, 2009
The Lions' former coach Rod Marinelli has received an offer from the Bears to become the team's new defensive line coach, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:Marinelli is also under consideration to become the Seattle Seahawks' new defensive coordinator, so he probably won't accept the offer until he knows if he could get that position.
January 3, 2009
The Detroit Lions are interested in interviewing Atlanta offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey, and Dallas offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has withdrawn himself from consideration, Mlive.com reports.

Our View:The Lions are also believed to be interested in Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.
January 1, 2009
The Detroit Lions will interview Miami Dolphins assistant head coach Todd Bowles for their head coaching vacancy, according to ESPN. The St. Louis Rams are also interested in Bowles.

Our View:No matter who the Lions decide to hire, it can't get any worse than their 0-16 finish this year.

Calvin Johnson enjoyed a great second season in the NFL despite playing for the winless Lions, according to the Detroit News. Johnson broke out with 78 receptions for 1,331 yards and 12 touchdowns. Johnson commented, "We just need to learn how to close out the fourth quarter. We're always there, but it just kind of slips away from us. We need to learn how to finish."

Our View:Johnson joins Herman Moore (1995) as the only Lions' receivers with at least 70 grabs, 1,200 receiving yards and 10 scores in a season. He is also the fifth receiver in team history to surpass 1,300 yards in a season and is tied for fourth place with Leon Hart (1951) on the franchise's career list with 12 touchdown catches in a season.
