Newsbreakers
November 18, 2009
The Detroit News is reporting that Lions' linebacker Ernie Sims did not practice with the team on Wednesday due to his hamstring injury. Sims is questionable for Sunday's game.

Our View:It's still early in the week, but it's not looking good for Sims again. If he can't go, DeAndre Levy will likely replace him yet again.
November 15, 2009
Week 10 inactives: QB Drew Stanton (3rd), RB Aaron Brown, DB Anthony Henry, LB Ernie Sims, OL Daniel Loper, OT Ephraim Salaam, DE Cliff Avril, and DT Landon Cohen.

Our View:As expected, QB Matthew Stafford (knee) and WR Calvin Johnson (knee) are active and will start. On defense, rookie DeAndre Levy replaces Ernie Sims, who is inactive due to a hamstring injury. Also, LB Larry Foote (knee) and DE Dewayne White (toe) are active and will start.

SB Nation reports that Detroit linebacker Ernie Sims will miss 1-2 months of action due to a Grade 2 tear in his hamstring.

Our View:The Lions were hoping that the injury would only keep Sims out a week or two at the most, but a Grade 2 tear takes 4-8 weeks to heal. DeAndre Levy, the rookie out of Wisconsin, will start in Sims' place until he returns to action. It will be a good chance for the youngster to show that he belongs in the lineup.
November 12, 2009
The Detroit News reports that the chances of Lions linebacker Ernie Sims playing in Week 10 against the Vikings are slim to none.

Our View:Sims is battling a hamstring injury and has been all but ruled out of this week's game. He suffered the injury last week in a loss to Seattle and is likely out for at least two to three weeks. Don't count on seeing him at all on Sunday, and look for DeAndre Levy to take his place in the starting lineup.

Lions' linebacker Ernie Sims did not practice on Wednesday due to his hamstring injury, according to mLive.com. Sims' status for this week is unknown at this point.

Our View:It looks like Sims might miss this week, and coach Jim Schwartz believes he could miss additional time. They aren't releasing much else at this point, so we will continue to monitor the situation.
October 30, 2009
Ernie Sims fully practiced for the last three days, and is probable for Sunday's home game against St. Louis, according to the Lions' official website.

Our View:Sims has been dealing with a shoulder injury, but is expected to play. His production should start to go back up when healthy.
October 15, 2009
Ernie Sims (shoulder) was limited in practice for the second straight day on Thursday, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View:He appears to be in danger of missing his fourth straight game this Sunday. After surpassing 113 tackles in each of his first three seasons in the league, he almost certainly will not in 2009, and his IDP value has taken a steep hit. If he ever gets healthy, he could be a nice sleeper pick for the second half of the season.
October 5, 2009
Ernie Sims has aggravated the shoulder injury that forced him to miss Week 3, according to the Detroit News.

Our View:He said the pain was as bad as when he initially suffered the injury. He isn't sounding probable for the team's Week 5 showdown with Pittsburgh.
September 27, 2009
Week 3 inactives: QB Drew Stanton (3rd), LB Ernie Sims, DB Marcus McCauley, CB Eric King, DE Turk McBride, OG Daniel Loper, OT Ephraim Salaam and DE Cliff Avril.

Our View:CB Philip Buchanon (neck), DT Grady Jackson (knee) and SS Marquand Manuel (knee) are all active and will start. Also, rookie DeAndre Levy will likely replace Sims at weak-side linebacker.
September 25, 2009
Ernie Sims is doubtful for Week 3 against Washington, according to NFL.com. He suffered a significant shoulder injury is Week 2 against Minnesota.

Our View:Sims is the anchor of the Lions' defense, and they could be headed for a long day on Sunday. DeAndre Levy will likely replace Sims at weak-side linebacker.
September 21, 2009
After starting 50 straight games at linebacker for the Lions, Ernie Sims will be out indefinitely after suffering a "significant" shoulder injury against the Vikings on Sunday, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View:He had nine tackles and a forced fumble before having to leave the game. DeAndre Levy will start in his absence.
September 20, 2009
MLive.com reports that linebacker Ernie Sims left Sunday's game with a shoulder injury and he will undergo an MRI on Monday. He had nine tackles and a fumble recovery before having to leave the game.

Our View:Sims has started 50 straight games for the Lions and hasn't missed since his rookie season in 2006. He's a fine IDP play in tackle heavy leagues, but his big play ability is limited.
September 20, 2009
Ernie Sims exited the game against Minnesota in the fourth quarter with an undisclosed injury.

Our View:No additional information is currently available regarding the severity of the injury. We will provide updates as they hit the newswire.
May 7, 2009
New defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham believes Ernie Sims will benefit from playing in the Lions' new Tampa-2 defense, according to MLive.com.

Our View:Sims will be able to rely on his instincts more in the new scheme and worry less about making reads. Derrick Brooks excelled in the scheme with the Buccaneers for many years, and Sims could bounce back and potentially join the elite class among fantasy linebackers this season following a disappointing 2008 campaign.
January 26, 2009
ESPN.com reports that new Lions head coach Jim Schwartz has hired Matt Burke to be the linebackers coach.

Our View:Burke was a defensive quality control coach in Tennessee for past three seasons, and worked under Schwartz.
January 22, 2009
Bob Slowik is expected to be hired as the Lions' new secondary coach, according to the Detroit News.

Our View:The 54-year-old served as the Broncos' defensive coordinator in 2007. He was also formerly the defensive coordinator of the Packers (2004), Browns (1999) and Bears (1993-98).
January 21, 2009
The Detroit Lions have hired Gunther Cunningham as the team's new defensive coordinator, according to the AP.

Our View:Cunningham has been the defensive coordinator in Kansas City since 2004, and since then his defenses have ranked (in yards per game allowed) 31st, 25th, 16th, 13th and 31st.
January 20, 2009
Leslie Frazier was not chosen as the Lions' head coach as he and the club disagreed about the rebuilding process, according to the Detroit News. Frazier said, "I'd rather not get into it. But we had different perceptions of where to go and the length of time to get there. We were really far apart in that."

Our View:Frazier was also a runner-up for the head coaching jobs in Denver and St. Louis.
January 19, 2009
According to the Detroit Free Press, linebacker Ernie Sims will not need to undergo routine cleanup surgery on his knee.

Our View:Sims battled injuries to his knee and ankle this season but still managed to finish the regular season with 113 tackles, good for a spot in the league's top 20.
January 17, 2009
Gunther Cunningham is expected to talk to the Lions about a possible coaching position, according to the KC Star.

Our View:New Lions' head coach Jim Schwartz worked with Cunningham previously in Tennessee.
January 11, 2009
Tennessee defensive coordinator Jim Schwarz will return to Detroit for a second interview with the Lions, the Detroit News reports.

Our View:Schwarz has been one of the league's hot assistants for a couple years now. With the Titans out of the playoffs after being upset by the Ravens, he's free to interview at his leisure.
