The Patriots have placed their franchise tag on Matt Cassel, according to ESPN.

Our View:We knew that Cassel made himself a lot of money this year, just not how much. It appears that he will make approximately $14.4 million next year as the Pats' insurance policy if Tom Brady doesn't recover fully by the start of next season.

If the New England Patriots decide to franchise tag quarterback Matt Cassel, as has been rumored, it will cost them approximately $14.4 million, ProFootballTalk.com reports.

Our View:That's an awful lot of money to spend on a backup quarterback, and though Cassel would undoubtedly enjoy that kind of payday, how would he feel about being relegated to No. 2 status after his success this season?
January 1, 2009
Matt Cassel will have the franchise tag placed upon him, according to Michael Lombardi, a host of Inside the NFL on Showtime, which was reported by The Providence Journal. "The Patriots are way too smart, and I've talked to people in the organization," said Lombardi. "They are going to franchise Matt Cassel. He's an asset and they can control their ability to trade him if they franchise him."

Our View:The Pats would have to give Cassel a one-year deal at the average salary of the league's five highest paid quarterbacks, so in an odd twist he would actually receive a larger salary in 2009 than Tom Brady. If true, this news likely means that the club is far from certain that Brady will be back at full health in 2009.

Minnesota is believed to have a strong interest in potential unrestricted free agent Matt Cassel, according to FOX Sports.

Our View:Coach Brad Childress wanted Brett Favre this season, but lost him to the Jets. Cassel proved he can be a solid starter in the NFL, as he fired 21 scoring strikes this season with New England, while maintaining a 89.1 efficiency rating. The fantasy value of deep threat Bernard Berrian could potentially improve if the club adds Cassel.
December 26, 2008
The Sporting News reports that quarterback Matt Cassel has been sacked a league leading 47 times this season, but he has gotten better protection in recent games.

Our View:Cassel has been remarkably durable throughout the pounding. The Bills will lok to blitz him often on Sunday, especially on third downs.
