Chargers' linebacker Shawne Merriman did not practice on Wednesday due to his foot issue, according to beat writer Kevin Acee. Merriman is expected to play this week.

Our View:Merriman played last week on the injury, so there is no reason to think he won't go this week as well. It's worth it to monitor his status if you have San Diego's D/ST, as Merriman can make a huge difference just by being on the field.
November 14, 2009

Our View:Merriman is dealing with a foot issue, but he was very matter-of-fact when discussing his status for Sunday. Expect him to play, which is an obvious boost to the Chargers' defensive unit.

Shawne Merriman (foot) was held out of Chargers practice on Friday, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. He is considered questionable for Sunday.

Our View:Merriman had seemingly gotten healthy after recording four sacks in his past two games. The team could just be being cautious, and he will probably play this Sunday.
November 11, 2009
Shawne Merriman (foot) fully practiced Wednesday, according to NFL.com.

Our View:Merriman racked up two sacks in each of his last two games, and will aim to stay hot this weekend against quarterback Donovan McNabb and the Eagles.

Shawne Merriman has been limited in practice with a foot ailment, but he is expected to play on Sunday at New York, according to the Giants' official website.

Our View:Merriman notched his first two sacks of the season last weekend against the rival Raiders, but will be facing a much better team on Sunday - meaning expectations should be tempered in IDP leagues.
November 2, 2009
Shawne Merriman recorded his first sack since Week 17 of the 2007 season against the Raiders on Sunday.

Our View:He had two against the Raiders. Does the fact that they came against JaMarcus Russell and Oakland make them not count? Merriman is not an IDP option at this point.
October 30, 2009
Shawne Merriman has not recorded a regular season sack since Week 17 of the 2007 season.

Our View:While that only spans seven games, it's still alarming. Merriman is clearly playing at less than 100 percent this season as he battles an Achilles injury, and you have to wonder if the Chargers might be best served by resting him at some point and letting him get back to 100 percent health.
October 29, 2009
Shawne Merriman (Achilles) was limited during Thursday's practice, according to NFL.com.

Our View:Merriman should be ready to go for Sunday's home game against Oakland. He would have a chance to pick up his first sack of the season in a favorable matchup.
October 23, 2009
Shawne Merriman injured his foot during Friday's practice, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Pro Football Talk speculates that the New England Patriots could be attempting to acquire Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman before Tuesday afternoon's trade deadline.

Our View:The Patriots have released four players in the past 24 hours, clearing a total of $2.87 million in payroll space, very near Merriman's cap hit of $2.97 million. Merriman has struggled both on and off the field this season, but the Pats have a long history of taking these kinds of risks, and a trade would not be surprising in the slightest. Stay tuned.
October 17, 2009
The National Football Post reports that outside linebacker Shawne Merriman is probable for Monday night's game against the Broncos.

Our View:Merriman has had a down season, partially because of a groin injury that has limited him, but he should be good to go Monday night and he predicts a breakout performance. The star defender said, "people will see a difference. I feel good, ready to go. More time to prepare, more time to rest up." Here's hoping he delivers on that promise.
October 15, 2009
Shawne Merriman fully practiced Thursday, according to the Broncos' official website. He has been recovering from a groin ailment.

ESPN.com is reporting that Chargers' linebacker Shawne Merriman took exception to the comments made by GM A.J. Smith calling the defense soft. "That's an opinion of a person, and it's not needed," Merriman said. "We know that we have to play better."

Our View:Merriman might want to show something on the field before calling out his GM, because the Chargers have been soft on defense so far this season. It is good to see that the players and coaching staff are committed to turning this thing around, because their D/ST unit has been a fantasy killer so far this season after being highly ranked going into the year.
October 6, 2009

Our View:He played only a handful of snaps last Sunday, and recorded just two tackles and no sacks. The Chargers have been allowing nearly 366 yards of offense per game, and would benefit greatly from finally having Merriman healthy.
October 4, 2009
Shawne Merriman is expected to start tonight at Pittsburgh, but is unsure of how much he will play, according to Jay Glazer's twitter page.

Our View:Merriman, who has been nursing a groin injury, was limited in practice Thursday and participated fully Friday. After three games, "Lights Out" is still looking for his first sack of the season, and we consider him a risky play in IDP leagues.
October 3, 2009
Shawne Merriman (groin) was a full participant in Chargers practice on Friday.

Our View:He is still listed as questionable for the this Sunday against the Steelers. The IDP stud will be a game-time decision. So far through three games in 2009, he has zero sacks.

September 30, 2009
Shawne Merriman did not practice Wednesday while nursing his groin ailment, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:It is uncertain if the star outside linebacker will be able to participate in Sunday night's game at Pittsburgh. Rookie Larry English would likely chip in on the pass rush if Merriman is unable to go.
September 29, 2009
The Chargers may keep Shawne Merriman out of action against the Steelers this weekend, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. He managed just two plays last week before his groin injury forced him to the sidelines. Coach Norv Turner mentioned that he he didn't want this to become something chronic.

Our View:Merriman has managed just one solo tackle this season. He should not be owned in IDP leagues and don't count on him playing this Sunday.

September 24, 2009
According to ESPN.com, Chargers' linebacker Shawne Merriman missed practice again on Thursday due to his groin injury.

Our View:The Chargers' defense can't afford to be without Merriman after the injury to Jamal Williams, but we won't know his status until closer to game time. The Chargers' defense has fallen in fantasy ranks already, and losing Merriman would drop them even further down the list.
September 23, 2009
Shawne Merriman missed Wednesday's practice while nursing a groin ailment, according to ChargersMedia.com.

Our View:Merriman is among the most feared pass rushers in the NFL, and Chad Pennington and the Dolphins' offense could catch a break in Week 3 if Merriman is slowed by his injury.
September 20, 2009
After recording one assisted tackle on the day, Shawne Merriman suffered a groin injury, according to the AP. "Lights Out" did record two quarterback hits, one of which led to an interception.

September 11, 2009
The San Diego County District Attorney's Office has closed the domestic violence case against Shawne Merriman due to insufficient evidence, according to 10News.com.

September 9, 2009
The San Diego County D.A. has begun reviewing whether to charge Shawne Merriman for his part in domestic violence against girlfriend Tila Tequila, according to ESPN.

Our View:Merriman states that he did not cause bodily harm to Tila Tequila. Paramedics did not find any injuries on her body, which bodes well in Merriman's defense. Stay tuned for updates on the elite linebacker.

There have been no charges filed against me."

Our View:Merriman's version of the story is that he was trying to prevent the woman from leaving his house because she was impaired, so she called the cops. This is an interesting new development, and we will keep you updated on any word from the police force or the NFL concerning Merriman's status.
September 6, 2009

August 19, 2009
Shawne Merriman does not believe his surgically-repaired knee will be 100 percent until mid-September, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. He is more concerned about getting his groin and hips back into shape though, as he said, "The knee is the easy thing. It is getting everything else firing again. Imagine not using your hips and things for all that time in the way you need to. It is tough."

Our View:Merriman is an elite pass rusher when healthy, but fantasy owners need to be patient as he may not make a strong impact early in the season.
August 18, 2009

May 4, 2009
Shawne Merriman did not participate in minicamp Sunday while recovering from a torn LCL and PCL, according to the Associated Press.

March 30, 2009
Shawne Merriman is reportedly back to full strength following his recovery from major knee surgery, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. He said, "I feel great, and I look amazing."

"We're a team, upstairs and downstairs, no matter what," Merriman told the San Diego Union-Tribune Monday. "This is a business, but if you address the situation publicly now you have turmoil."

Our View:Friction between Smith and Tomlinson has been brewing since Smith directed comments at the All-Star running back that were interpreted as mocking. Reports are the Chargers may release Tomlinson or offer him a new deal.
January 20, 2009
The San Diego Chargers announced the hiring of two defensive assistants. Don Johnson was named defensive line coach and Steve Wilks secondary coach, according to the Chargers team website.
