Newsbreakers
November 6, 2009
Bob Sanders (torn biceps tendon) has been placed on injured reserve, officially ending his 2009 season.

Our View:Another year, another lost season for Sanders. He may be injuring himself out of the Colts' future plans.
November 6, 2009
Updating an earlier item, ESPN's Adam Schefter is now reporting that Bob Sanders will miss the rest of the season with a torn biceps tendon.

Our View:Sadly, this is par for the course for the injury-prone Sanders, who has played more than ten games just twice in his six-year NFL career.
November 6, 2009
Updating an earlier report, it has been revealed that Colts safety Bob Sanders must undergo elbow surgery and is out indefinitely, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Our View:Sanders has become a parody of himself at this point, getting hurt at every turn. The Colts are already 5-0 without him this season, and while he is an elite player, his absence will by no means be a major factor for the team down the stretch.
November 6, 2009
Bob Sanders visited with Dr. James Andrews on Thursday to see how severe his elbow injury is, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Our View:Yikes. Meeting with Dr. Andrews on a Thursday almost never equals playing on Sunday. Meanwhile, it's just another week in the football life of the ever injury-prone Sanders.
November 5, 2009
Bob Sanders missed practice for the second straight day Thursday due to an elbow injury, according to the Colts' official website.

Our View:It is uncertain if the oft-injured safety will be able to play Sunday against Houston. He started the season on the PUP list while recovering from knee surgery.
November 4, 2009
Bob Sanders is dealing with an elbow injury, according to ProFootballTalk.com. He did not practice today.

Our View:Sanders recently returned from the PUP list following his recovery from knee surgery, and now the fragile safety has a new injury to deal with. It is uncertain if he will be ready to go for Sunday's home game against pass-happy Houston.
October 29, 2009
Bob Sanders sat out Thursday's practice, according to the Colts' official website.

Our View:Sanders is just resting his surgically-repaired knee, and is expected to play in Sunday's home game against the 49ers. His workload in the Colts' secondary will increase as he feels more comfortable. He only notched one tackle in his season debut last week at St. Louis.
October 25, 2009
Bob Sanders left today's game at St. Louis in the fourth quarter.

Our View:Sanders walked to the lockerroom with a trainer, and it is uncertain if he was injured, or suffered a setback with his surgically-repaired knee. He was making his 2009 debut today.
October 23, 2009
Colts head coach Jim Caldwell confirmed on Friday that safety Bob Sanders (knee) will make his 2009 season debut this Sunday against the Rams, according to IndyFootballReport.com.

Our View:He will be on a snap count, however, and probably won't be the difference maker he has been throughout his career quite yet.
October 22, 2009
Bob Sanders sat out today's practice to rest his surgically-repaired knee, according to the Colts' official website.

Our View:Sanders is expected to make his 2009 debut this weekend at St. Louis, but will be worked back into the mix slowly. He is an elite strong safety when healthy, which unfortunately is not often.
October 21, 2009
The National Football Post reports that Pro Bowl safety Bob Sanders is expected to play in Week 7 against St. Louis.

Our View:There is no guarantee from the Colts that Sanders will play, but all signs point to him getting on the field for the first time this season against the bottom feeding Rams. He'll take part in the majority of this week's practices and will likely be reevaluated after. This spells trouble for an already troubled St. Louis offense and creates a banner week to play the Colts defense in fantasy leagues.
October 20, 2009
Out all season as he recovers from offseason knee surgery, Bob Sanders could make his season debut on Sunday in St. Louis, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Our View:Obviously, the Rams and their anemic passing attack would be a great team to get your feet wet against. When he does finally come back, the league's current number two scoring defense will be getting one of the league's best safeties in the equivalent of a blockbuster midseason trade.
October 15, 2009
The National Football Post reports safety Bob Sanders was limited in Wednesday's practice, but had his most extensive workout of the season.

Our View:Sanders has been held out of practice until this week after having offseason surgery on his right knee. Coach Caldwell stated, "He is hungry, there's no question about that. I think he's been preparing diligently. He looks like Bob, so we're all anxious. When he gets comfortable with what he's doing, we'll get him in there." Sounds like he may be ready after this week's bye, which would be a huge boost for the Colts defense.
October 11, 2009
Colts inactives: WR Anthony Gonzalez, FS Bob Sanders, OL Charlie Johnson, QB Curtis Painter, DL Fili Moala, CB Kelvin Hayden, CB Marlin Jackson, RB Mike Hart.

Our View:Sanders (knee) made the trip to Tennessee, but is not quite ready to return to the gridiron. Gonzalez is also not ready to return, so Pierre Garcon will start another game as Reggie Wayne's wingman. Quarterback Kerry Collins could benefit with both Jackson and Hayden out at cornerback.
October 10, 2009
Bob Sanders made the trip for Sunday's game against the Titans at LP Field, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Our View:Sanders is progressing in his recovery from offseason knee surgery, but remains doubtful to return to the gridiron this week.
October 9, 2009
According to the Indianapolis Star, Bob Sanders practiced for the third time this week on Friday and may play in Sunday's game against the Titans.

Our View:Sanders is officially listed as doubtful on the Colts injury reports, but he has not ruled himself out of returning to action. The defensive stalwart had this to say, "Not sure yet. We haven't made a decision on that. If you hear anything, you'll hear it from coach Caldwell." No one seems certain, including Coach Caldwell, but if Sanders does manage to play it would be a huge boost for the Colts. Expect him to be a game-time decision.
October 7, 2009
Bob Sanders was limited in Wednesday's practice, according to the Colts' official website.

Our View:Sanders is progressing in his recovery from a knee injury, but it is uncertain when he may make his 2009 debut.
October 6, 2009
Bob Sanders (knee) briefly participated in a Colts workout on Monday, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Our View:There is still no timetable for the perpetually hurt Sanders' return, however. Unlike recent years when he's been out, the Colts defense has not wilted, though. They are currently eighth in the NFL in passing yards allowed - scary, considering how much better their pass defense figures to be when he finally returns.
September 11, 2009
Bob Sanders (knee) has been officially ruled out for the Colts' Week 1 contest, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Our View:Sanders isn't expected to return for around a month. Melvin Bullitt will start in his place.
September 7, 2009
SI.com is reporting that the Colts expect safety Bob Sanders to return to the field within five weeks. Sanders is out while recovering from knee surgery.

Our View:The team isn't saying when they expect Sanders to return specifically, but they did say that they would have placed him on the PUP list if he was going to be out for more than five weeks. Don't expect him this week, but he should be back in a few.
September 5, 2009
Bob Sanders has avoided starting the regular season on the PUP list, and he was placed on the Colts' active roster, according to the National Football Post. He has been recovering from offseason knee surgery.

Our View:Apparently Sanders was deemed fit to play, and won't have to miss the first six weeks of the season - but is still viewed as a longshot to be ready for Week 1.
August 27, 2009
The Colts may keep Bob Sanders on the PUP list if he is not deemed fit to play at the start of the season, according to the Indianapolis Star. He is recovering from offseason knee surgery.

Our View:Team president Bill Polian noted that more will be known regarding Sanders' status next week. The elite safety would miss the first six weeks if he starts the season on the PUP list.
August 25, 2009
Head coach Jim Caldwell is optimistic regarding Bob Sanders' recovery from offseason knee surgery, according to the Indianapolis Star. Caldwell said, "Dr. James Andrews has looked at him and really feels he is on target and coming along. He is making progress. Sanders feels good about where he is, Dr. Andrews feels good about where he is, so that means I should feel good about where he is."

Our View:This is encouraging, but the Colts remain uncertain if Sanders will be ready to go for Week 1 against Jacksonville. Sanders is a classic high-risk, high-reward fantasy pick. He is an elite safety when healthy, buit has a terrible track record with durability.
August 17, 2009
Phillip B. Wilson of the Indianapolis Star does not believe Bob Sanders will be ready to go for Week 1 against Jacksonville. He is recovering from off-season knee surgery.

Our View:Head coach Jim Caldwell is also not confident that Sanders will be ready for the opener. Sanders is still worth targeting in IDP leagues, as long as fantasy owners add solid depth behind him for insurance.
August 13, 2009
Bob Sanders has been ruled out for Friday's preseason opener against the Vikings, according to the Indianapolis Star. He remains on the PUP list while recovering from his off-season knee surgery.

Our View:Sanders is an elite fantasy safety when healthy, but the oft-injured vet remains a risky prospect for IDP leagues.
August 11, 2009
The Indianapolis Star is reporting that Colts' safety Bob Sanders has a meeting scheduled with orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews. The team wants to consult Andrews to find out when Sanders will be able to return to the field.

Our View:Sanders hasn't been able to get on the field yet, and the Colts are starting to get a bit concerned. Any time Dr. Andrews' name is mentioned, the situation is automatically assumed to be bad, but we will wait and see on this one.
August 5, 2009
Bob Sanders is currently on the PUP list, but Colts' head coach Jim Caldwell indicated that he is progressing well from offseason knee surgery, according to the Tribune Star.

Our View:Sanders is expected to be good to go for Week 1 against the Jaguars at Lucas Oil Stadium. He has a terrible track record with durability, but is an elite strong safety when healthy. He is worth targeting in IDP leagues, as long as you add solid depth for insurance.
June 8, 2009
The Indianapolis Star is reporting that Bob Sanders isn't doing any on-field work with the team while he recovers "from the physical demands of the 2008 season." The team does not appear to be concerned with his injury status.

Our View:Sanders must have just gotten absolutely beaten up last year if he is still recovering from the physical demands of last season. In reality, he is playing the veteran card so he doesn't have to participate in offseason practices. Sanders should be fine for the beginning of the season, but if the physical demands of the 2009 season catch up with him then he may find himself on the shelf again.
May 4, 2009
Bob Sanders restructured his contract with the Colts to save cap space, according to the Indianapolis Star. The club saved around $1.6MM by converting $2.17MM of Sanders' $5MM roster bonus and prorating it over the length of his contract. Sanders will count around $6.1MM against the cap.

Our View:Sanders is among the best strong safeties in the NFL, but has a poor track record with durability. He has missed 35 regular season games over his five-year career.
February 23, 2009
Bob Sanders is expected to start training camp on the PUP list due to his ailing right knee, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Our View:Sanders is an elite fantasy defensive back when healthy, but looks to remain a risky fantasy option due to his poor durability.
January 20, 2009
Indianapolis Colts' defensive coordinator Ron Meeks resigned after seven seasons with the team, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:After a first round playoff elimination this season, and a change to Jim Caldwell at head coach, this move is not unexpected. The Colts were 11th overall in total defense in 2008 and look to improve their terrible run defense.
January 18, 2009
ProFootballTalk.com reports that if Herm Edwards is fired from Kansas City he could take over as the Colts defensive coordinator.

Our View:Edwards is still the Chiefs head coach, but rumors are flying that he will not be for long. Gunther Cunningham currently holds the position, but he is rumored to be interested in the Lions DC position.
January 14, 2009
According to the Associated Press, new Colts head coach Jim Caldwell announced Wednesday that special teams coach Russ Purnell would not be retained for the 2009 season.

Our View:Indianapolis consistently ranked near the bottom of the league in kickoff and punt return coverage during Purnell's seven-year tenure.
January 2, 2009
Bob Sanders practiced Friday and is not listed on the Colts' injury report, according to ESPN. He has been recovering from a knee ailment.
