November 19, 2009
Brett Favre (groin, hip) was again limited in Vikings practice on Thursday, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Our View:Iron Brett last sat out during the first George Bush administration, so he will be good to go come game time on Sunday.
November 18, 2009
Brett Favre (groin, hip) was limited during Wednesday's practice, according to the Pioneer Press.

Our View:The iron man has not missed a game over his previous 16 NFL seasons, and should be ready to go for Sunday's battle against the Seahawks, who are ranked 22nd in pass defense.
November 15, 2009
Brett Favre completed 20-of-29 passes for 344 yards with one touchdown against no interceptions in the Week 10 victory over Detroit.

Our View:Favre completed 68.9 percent of his passes and averaged an incredible 11.8 yards per attempt. At 40 years of age, the ironman has thrown 17 touchdowns against only three interceptions this season. The 19-year veteran is a legitmate No. 1 fantasy quarterback in 12-team leagues.
November 13, 2009
Brett Favre (hip/groin) is probable for Sunday, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press' Sean Jensen.

Our View:Obviously, Iron Brett will play. And since he's playing against Detroit, he will almost certainly continue to play well.
November 11, 2009
Brett Favre was limited in practice by a hip injury on Wednesday, according to DetroitLions.com.

Our View:It's no secret that Favre has been off to a sizzling start in 2009, but he's recently dealt with a groin injury and now this hip injury. It's hard to envision his second half touchdown-to-interception ratio being 17-to-3.
November 2, 2009
Brett Favre has said his 17-of-28, 244 yard, four-touchdown performance against the Packers on Sunday came while he was playing with an injured groin, according to Sports Illustrated.

Our View:Favre supposedly aggravated a minor injury he suffered during practice last week in pregame warm-ups. While he didn't look injured, considering his iron-man status, it's hard not to take the man at his word.
November 1, 2009
Brett Favre is 7-0 with a 102.0 passer rating against teams with Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers as the head coach or coordinator, according to John Czarnecki of FOX Sports.

Our View:Favre is averaging 240 yards per game this season with 12 touchdowns. And he completed 24-of-31 passes for 271 yards and three touchdowns for a 135.3-passer rating in the Week 4 matchup against the Packers.
October 30, 2009
Brett Favre was limited in practice for the third straight day Friday, according to the Vikings' official website. He is nursing a hip ailment.

Our View:The gritty field general is expected to play in Sunday's game at Green Bay. It will mark his first trip to Lambeau since leaving the Packers.
October 28, 2009
According to Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Fox Sports will have a camera that follows only Brett Favre on Sunday in his showdown with his former team.

Our View:The feed will be streamed live on FoxSports.com and NFL.com. The cult of Brett Favre grows ever larger.
October 28, 2009
Brett Favre was limited in Vikings practice on Wednesday by a hip injury, according to Sean Jensen of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Our View:Obviously the man who never misses a game will not be missing what is potentially the biggest game of his life this Sunday in Green Bay.
October 25, 2009
Brett Favre completed 34-of-51 passes for zero touchdowns against one interception in the Week 7 loss at Pittsburgh.

Our View:Favre, who also lost a fumble, had two turnovers on the day. Based on his overall numbers, Favre is a top-10 fantasy quarterback in all formats, but he has been somewhat inconsistent. The 19-year veteran has passed for multiple touchdowns in four games, and one or fewer scores three times. Up next, Favre should be skyhigh for a meeting against the Packers at legendary Lambeau Field.
October 18, 2009
Brett Favre carried the Vikings in Sunday's 33-31 win over the Ravens at the Metrodome, as he completed 21-of-29 passes for 278 yards, with three touchdown passes and no interceptions. Two of his scoring strikes were caught by tight end Visanthe Shiancoe.

Our View:Favre is fitting in great with the Vikings, as he threw 12 touchdown passes and only two interceptions over the first six games of the season. He will try to lead the club to another win against the defending champs at Heinz Field next weekend.
October 8, 2009
Brett Favre was limited in practice on Thursday due to a foot injury.

Our View:Favre is on the injury report with ankle and knee injuries as well, but it looks like the foot is the big one. Still, it won't keep him out of action on Sunday, and he could be a very promising fantasy performer against the bottom-feeding Rams.
October 7, 2009
Pro Football Talk reports that Brett Favre is on the Vikings Week 5 injury report with a foot, ankle and knee injury.

Our View:Favre was limited in practice on Wednesday, but the Iron Man certainly isn't in jeopardy of missing Sunday's start. He's no spring chicken, but has proven that despite his laundry list of bumps and bruises he can still put up very good numbers. He's an excellent play in fantasy leagues this week as he's matched up against the helpless St. Louis Rams.
October 5, 2009
Brett Favre performed very well in Monday night's 30-23 win over the Packers at the Metrodome, as he completed 24-of-31 passes for 271 yards, with three scoring strikes and no interceptions.

Our View:Favre has fired at least two touchdown passes in each of his last three games, and has seven over the span. He led the Vikings to a 4-0 start, and had to be grinning after gunning down his former team tonight.
October 2, 2009
Brett Favre is on the Vikings' injury report this week with a foot injury, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Favre was limited in practice on Thursday but will be fine for Monday's game.

Our View:It sounds like Favre is just dealing with some general soreness, so nothing to be worried about here. Favre wouldn't miss Monday's game if he lost a foot, so get ready for the hype to really kick off.
September 27, 2009
Brett Favre completed 24-of-46 passes for 301 yards with two touchdowns against one interception in the Week 3 victory over San Francisco.

Our View:Favre connected with Greg Lewis on a 32-yard touchdown with two seconds left to seal the victory. The Vikings are 3-0 with Favre under center, and the 19-year veteran has thrown two touchdown passes in each of the last two games. The gunslinger is a serviceable fantasy backup, and next week should be hyped off the charts with the Packers visiting Minnesota for a Monday night showdown.
September 22, 2009
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune is reporting that the Minnesota-Green Bay Monday night game scheduled for October 5 will take place at the Metrodome regardless of what happens to the Twins down the stretch. If the Twins and Tigers need a 163rd game to decide the division, the game will be played at a different time than the originally scheduled date of October 5.

Our View:The NFL has said they won't be moving the game, as it will be one of the biggest of 2009 with Brett Favre facing the Packers. The likely scenario would be to have the baseball game on Tuesday instead, since the playoffs don't start until Wednesday. No matter what, Favre vs. Green Bay will go on as scheduled.
September 21, 2009
Brett Favre is suffering from a "bent" fingernail on his throwing hand, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Somehow, it doesn't seem likely that a fingernail will stop his streak of 271 consecutive games played. However, now we know that we may hear after the season that he didn't want to play through the "injury." Whether or not he decides to bring it up, though, will depend on how many interceptions he throws in the next few weeks.
September 20, 2009
Brett Favre gunned down the Lions in Sunday's 27-13 win at Ford Field, as he completed 23-of-27 passes for 155 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Both scoring strikes came on short passes, one to tight end Visanthe Shiancoe and the other rookie Percy Harvin.

Our View:Favre is fitting in well with the Vikings, and should continue to be productive as long as he can stay healthy.
September 16, 2009
Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that the NFL has handed out fines to the New York Jets in response to their handling of the Brett Favre injury last season. The team was fined $75,000, and GM Mike Tannenbaum and former coach Eric Mangini were each hit with a $25,000 fine.

Our View:Maybe this story will die down a bit now. It was believed that Mangini and Tannenbaum might get hit with a little harsher penalty, but $25k is nothing to sneeze at. Maybe ol' Golden Brett should donate to the fund after his mouth sparked the whole issue.
September 10, 2009
Jets' GM Mike Tannenbaum confirmed on Thursday that he and the organization were aware of the injury to Brett Favre's shoulder last season but did not list him on the injury report, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. The Jets will likely face a fine or other punishment from the league for their actions.

Our View:Favre came out and said this in an interview yesterday, and it is good to see the team take responsibility for their actions. They will likely get a slap on the wrist for not putting him on the injury report, and then this will all be over.
September 10, 2009
The St. Paul Pioneer Press is reporting that Vikings' quarterback Brett Favre doesn't feel like he is on the same page with number one target Bernard Berrian. "You can't make excuses; you've got to get it done. So we're way behind. He's not. I would say I'm way behind on where I need to be with him," Favre said of the injury to Berrian.

Our View:Favre went through the same thing with Laveraneus Coles last season, and those two got it figured out before long. We expect Favre and Berrian to do the same thing this season, as both are veterans and should be able to get on the same page quickly.
September 9, 2009
According to the Associated Press, Brett Favre has admitted that he may not be able to play in all 16 games this season.

Our View:The Iron Man's streak may come to an end. In all likelihood, it probably will. Favre is almost 40, has a torn rotator cuff and injured his ribs this preseason. He apparently was willing to sit out last year while with the Jets, but never did. Expect him to follow through on it this season. He will start his 270th consecutive game on Sunday, but count on seeing Sage Rosenfels make a start or two.
September 4, 2009
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Brett Favre has been fined $10,000 for his illegal hit on Texans' safety Eugene Williams late last month.

Our View:Thankfully, Favre's hit wasn't hailed as a "crafty play" by a veteran, and was treated as what it was - an exceedingly dirty hit.
September 2, 2009
According to SI.com, Brett Favre will not play in Friday's preseason finale against Dallas.

Our View:It's not just Favre. Coach Brad Childress announced Wednesday that he doesn't want to risk injury to any of his starters, so they will all sit. This is a common move at this point in the preseason and we expect a lot of other teams to do the same thing.
August 31, 2009
Brett Favre was sharp in Monday's 17-10 preseason win over the Texans, as he completed 13-of-18 passes for 142 yards, with a 28-yard touchdown pass to running back Chester Taylor.

Our View:Favre may be playing with a cracked rib, but it apparently did not hinder him, evidenced by his solid stat-line.
August 31, 2009
Brett Favre told the media on Monday that he believes he may be playing with a cracked rib, according to ESPN.com. Favre said he still plans to play the entire first half on Monday and that he won't wear any kind of protective equipment because "the damage is done."

Our View:This hasn't been the best start to a new quarterback's tenure in a city, and now apparently Favre is feeling discomfort when he takes a deep breath. We will have to see how it affects him tonight, but chances are he will play through something like this during the regular season.
August 26, 2009
"Knowledgeable NFL people" have told ESPN's Adam Schefter that support for Brett Favre in the Vikings' locker room is an "issue," with someone else saying his addition has created a "schism."

Our View:Not that this should be surprising to anybody. If a team allows someone to fly in the face of all football and team conventions - namely skipping training camp - it's bound to create resentment amongst the people who have been there the whole time. If Favre isn't good, really good, out of the gate, it's plausible there could be a full-scale meltdown in Minnesota's locker room. And though the ways it will affect Favre's season will likely be subtle, it can't help someone's production, and therefore fantasy production, to have a locker room that is against him.
August 24, 2009
ProFootballTalk.com is reporting that Vikings' quarterback Brett Favre is expected to play the entire first half of the team's next preseason game against the Vikings. Favre played in just two series in his first game with the team last Friday.

Our View:This was expected, as the third preseason game is traditionally the one in which the starters play the most. Favre needs to get used to game speed, and he should get plenty of opportunity in his half of work.
August 21, 2009
Brett Favre was 1-of-4 for four yards in his Viking debut on Friday.

Our View:Favre played just two series and went three and out on both. He did get a roaring ovation from fans despite his rusty effort. He'll likely play longer in the Vikes' next preseason game as it looks like he could use the work.
August 20, 2009
According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Brett Favre is still throwing the ball so hard that the Vikings' receivers are struggling to catch his passes.

Our View:Apparently Favre throws a wee bit harder than Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson. However, this good news is still dampened a little bit by a report from earlier in the day that said Favre's rotator cuff injury is likely to worsen as the season progresses. With Adrian Peterson still the focal point of the Vikes offense, Favre is not an elite, or even above average, option at quarterback for 2009.
August 20, 2009
According to Pro Football Talk, the partial tear in Brett Favre's rotator cuff is likely to worsen over the course of the season.

Our View:Favre has looked good so far in camp and is throwing hard, but the injury causes concern. A medical source stated that "Cleared to play does not mean cleared to play well. He's at high risk (for greater tearing) both because of trauma and his style of play." Favre could be a decent backup for fantasy leagues, but we wouldn't advise going into the season with him as your number one quarterback.
August 18, 2009
The Minnesota Vikings' official website is confirming that the team has signed Brett Favre. Terms of the deal were not disclosed at the announcement, but it is believed to be either a one- or two-year deal worth between $10 and $12 million per year.

Our View:Well this is rumor and speculation no longer. Favre is officially a Viking, and reports are that he is already at practice with the team. He needs all the snaps he can get, because he is expected to be the team's starter Friday night against Kansas City.
August 18, 2009
More news on the Brett Favre saga, as the Minneapolis Star-Tribune is reporting that Favre is expected to practice with the team on Tuesday and he is also expected to start the team's next preseason game Friday against Kansas City.

Our View:Favre is somewhat familiar with the offense the Vikings run, so it isn't completely outrageous that he could start on Friday. The team was scheduled to practice at 1:30 pm today, but that time may be pushed back to allow Favre to participate. Expect plenty more Favre news over the next few hours.
August 18, 2009
Updating a previous report, Bus Cook, the agent of Brett Favre, confirmed to USA Today that Favre will be signing with the Vikings. "It's a done deal," Cook said. "He thinks he still has something left in the tank and I think it will work well."

Our View:Well that's pretty definitive. Favre is on his way to Minneapolis, and it looks like he could get the deal finalized as soon as this evening. The two sides reportedly negotiated deep into Monday night, and it looks like the deal is worth somewhere between $10-$12 million for one season. Favre should be considered as a QB 2 in most leagues, but he could provide some solid production with weapons like Percy Harvin, Bernard Berrian, Sidney Rice, and, of course, Adrian Peterson.
August 18, 2009
ProFootballTalk.com is reporting that rumors are running rampant that Brett Favre could join the Vikings as soon as today. Several sources are claiming that Vikings' owner Zygi Wilf has sent his plane to Mississippi to pick up Favre and that he and his wife are on their way to Minnesota to sign a one-year contract worth $12 million.

Our View:It looks like there is something major brewing in Minnesota. We will continue to follow the story closely, and we will update the situation as soon as we hear anything.
August 17, 2009
According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, there is a strong believe amongst the players at Vikings camp that Brett Favre will play for the team at some point this season.

Our View:Please somebody make it stop. Can't the world just bask in a real Brett Favre retirement in peace? Glazer says both he and "(darn) near everybody" on the Vikings are convinced he will be back this season, and that they speak of the matter as a "when" and not an "if." He even goes so far as to say, "This is not one of those 'FOXSports.com has learned ...' scoops. Instead, it's a picture that has been painted for me and a prediction I'm making after spending my time with Zygi Wilf's squad. My prediction couldn't be more emphatic." Holy smokes. He says most believe he will sign with the team by or around their third preseason game (August 31). The joke was on you (admittedly, all of us) for thinking this lunacy might finally be over. Maybe in the end, we will all be better off for having gone through this together, but probably not.
July 28, 2009
Updating an earlier report, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune is reporting that Brett Favre reportedly told Vikings' coach Brad Childress that part of the reason he decided to remain retired was the mental and physical grind of a long NFL season.

Our View:Wow. After spending the entire summer assuming that Favre was going to quarterback the Vikings this season, this story is a shocker. We will have a better idea about more of the reasons behind Favre's decision when he makes an official statement, but it looks like he is concerned that he will not be able to handle the grind of an entire season. As always, when we hear more, we will pass it on to you.
July 28, 2009
The Minneapolis Star Tribune is reporting that Vikings' coach Brad Childress has been informed that Brett Favre has decided to turn down the Vikings' one-year offer and stay retired.

Our View:We will follow up on this story when more info in released, but it looks like Favre will not be playing in 2009. Stay tuned for more details.
July 23, 2009
According to ESPN.com's Ed Werder, Brett Favre is still undecided whether he will play another season of professional football.

Our View:Favre and the Vikings already have a one-year $10 million deal in place, but it's apparently not about the money. Favre is more concerned that his body won't hold up over a 16-game season. Still, Favre says that his injured shoulder and biceps feel better and he isn't currently experiencing any pain while throwing. He has also received loads of support for his return by not only the Vikings coaching staff, but by some of its top players as well. Adrian Peterson, Jared Allen and Steve Hutchinson have all publicly lobbied (and contacted Brett directly) about joining the organization. The 18-year veteran likely feels pressure and possibly even some obligation to sign with Minnesota based on this continued support. Looks like it's all down to another wait and see moment with the soap opera that is Brett Favre's career choices.
July 20, 2009
According to a blog at NFL.com, those close to Brett Favre believe he will make an announcement by Friday regarding his plans for the upcoming season. Favre self-imposed a deadline of July 30 by which he would inform the Vikings whether or not he is going to play.

Our View:It is still widely believed that Favre is going to suit up for the Vikes this season, and we may find out sooner than expected if Favre does announce his decision by Friday. Sometimes reports citing "people close to the situation" aren't always accurate, but we will monitor this situation closely as usual.
July 19, 2009
According to a report at the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Vikings' head coach Brad Childress told the paper that he has seen Brett Favre on tape throwing to high school receivers and that he "liked his throwing motion, the little bit that I saw on tape."

Our View:The more news that comes out of Minnesota, the more it looks like Favre is going to be playing another season. The Vikes aren't putting any pressure on him, and assuming he has no setbacks with his shoulder it looks like he will be wearing purple next season. The self-imposed deadline is approaching, so stay tuned for updates on his status with the team.
July 15, 2009
Vikings' head coach Brad Childress noted that he is willing to wait for Brett Favre's decision regarding whether he will return to the NFL, according to the Star Tribune. Childress said, "Favre is not going to play this game unless he can play the way that everybody is used to seeing him play. I think if he is going to play, he will not miss a day of training camp."

Our View:Childress believes Favre is still a top-five NFL quarterback, and has no issues with Favre delaying his decision to return to the gridiron. Favre should have no problem beating out Tarvaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels for the starting job at quarterback if he ultimately signs a deal with Minnesota.
July 15, 2009
Brett Favre has told the Associated Press that he will make a decision about playing in 2009 by July 30.

Our View:The world's greatest ongoing melodrama finally, mercifully has an end date. Expect the answer to be "yes," but don't move him too high up your draft board. Favre threw a league-leading 22 interceptions in 2008, and will be playing for a Vikings team devoid of pass catching weapons.
July 15, 2009
The latest news out of the cottage Brett Favre comeback industry has the legendary quarterback supposedly holding out for more money from the team he has never taken a snap for, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Our View:Favre is reportedly in position to command around $10 million a season, while the Vikings would be more comfortable with an incentive laden deal. It's hard to believe someone who threw a league leading 22 interceptions in 2008 could command that much money, but the Vikes will likely have no choice but to pay it. Whenever Favre does officially say he's playing, don't move him too far up your draft board. He has a limited amount of weapons to work with in the Twin Cities, and is coming off a dreadful 2008. There are many better options out there.
July 12, 2009
According to ESPN.com, free agent quarterback Brett Favre had a private tryout with Vikings' offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell last week.

Our View:Favre has yet to make a decision on whether he'll play this season and he likely wants to see if his arm will hold up for a full season. He apparently warned the Vikings that his decision may be delayed, which could make him a late addition to training camp that breaks on July 30th. Favre reportedly threw about 100 balls in a pretty intense training session and said he felt some definite pain and inconsistency.
July 6, 2009
Brett Favre has reportedly put money down on a Minnesota-area condo, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. The deposit was $30,000.

Our View:There is belief that the Vikings will sign the future Hall of Famer before season tickets go on sale July 20. The Vikings' aerial attack would greatly benefit with Favre leading the way under center, namely speed demon Bernard Berrian.
July 4, 2009
According to the Clarion-Ledger, Dr. James Andrews told the paper in an interview that Brett Favre wants to play this season and he wants to do it with the Vikings. Dr Andrews went on to say "He wants to end his career on a high note and I hope he can. He's a tough guy, a great guy. I'm pulling for him. He wants to play. He just wants to make sure his shoulder and arm are healthy enough."

Our View:Well the signs keep pointing to a Favre return, and at this point it seems almost like a certainty. Favre would really shock the world if he didn't come back at this point, so never rule anything out with Brett.
June 21, 2009
Updating an earlier report, agent Bus Cook is shooting down the rumor that client Brett Favre has agreed to a contract with the Vikings, according to the Pioneer Press.

Our View:The rumor also claimed that the Vikings already approved production of Favre jerseys with Reebok. The Vikings are yet to comment on the rumor.
June 21, 2009
In a strange turn of events, Profootballtalk.com stumbled onto a tip that Brett Favre may have already secretly signed with the Minnesota Vikings.

Our View:When confirming the source, PFT received only, "I will not deny it...I will leave it at that" in return. This doesn't sound completely bogus, and it's part of the swirling Favre soap opera, so why wouldn't it be true? He very well could have already signed and the Vikings are just keeping it a secret from the NFL. In another juicy tidbit, Reebok has been rumored to have already approved the production of Number 4 Vikings jerseys. Hmmm.
June 19, 2009
Minnesota head coach Brad Childress commented that he believes Brett Favre is pain-free, according to the Star Tribune.

Our View:Favre needs to build up his endurance and stamina. Childress did not speculate that Favre will be joining the Vikings if deemed healthy. His agent (Bus Cook) may ask for more money than Minnesota is willing to shell out.
June 17, 2009
Vikings owner Zigi Wylf seems to be eager to add Brett Favre to his team. The Pioneer Press reports that the owner told them, "Right now, it's all up to Brett Favre to determine where his future is at." Coach Brad Childress added, "He's making a push to come back. He won't play, unless he feels he's capable of playing at the level he's played over the course of years. I know he's working hard to get there."

Our View:Favre is working out in Mississippi...with a high school team. He is not satisfied with his arm at this point, but it seems inevitable that he signs with the Vikings. However, you can probably expect him to wait until the last minute so that he doesn't have to exert himself too much in these petty offseason workouts.
June 15, 2009
Brett Favre told Joe Buck on his new HBO show that he is considering extending his career in the NFL. He said, "Maybe. I am considering it. About 2 1/2 weeks ago, I had surgery with Dr. James Andrews. More or less, I can throw and I could throw before the surgery, but I could not throw late in the year last season. Certain throws hurt. I had pain in my neck and down my arm. When I left the first time, I knew I needed surgery and I did not want to have it. If it feels better, I am rehabbing."

Our View:He added that he talked to the Vikings so far regarding playing again, and could teach their offense. The Vikings' receivers would receive a boost if Favre joins the club, namely deep threat Bernard Berrian.
June 13, 2009
ProFootballTalk.com is reporting that Bus Cook, the agent of Brett Favre, told reporters on Friday that he doesn't know what Favre plans to do but the answer may be coming in the next few weeks.

Our View:Cook said that Brett will be able to play, but he doesn't know if the desire to play is there. He is giving the typical media talk, but if Favre can play he is fully expected to be a member of the Vikings this season. Stay tuned for the ongoing coverage of the Favre Saga.
June 11, 2009
Vikings coach Brad Childress admitted after Thursday's OTA that he spoke with Brett Favre last week, according to the Star-Tribune.

Our View:There was apparently never any deadline, which is just the latest example of made up reports to keep this story in the headlines at the start of every week. If anything is going to actually happen here, it will probably be July before it goes down.
June 10, 2009
Head coach Brad Childress told KFAN radio in Minneapolis that no deadline exists for the potential signing of quarterback Brett Favre, ProFootballTalk.com reports.

Our View:Childress echoes what the Minneapolis Star Tribune previously reported. For now, the only thing fantasy owners need to know is that Favre is not a member of the Vikings. Until he signs, all the rumors are simply white noise.
June 9, 2009
The Minneapolis Star Tribune is reporting that the ESPN story saying the Vikings have imposed a deadline on Brett Favre to decide whether or not he will play with the team in 2009 is "made up."

Our View:What is not "made up" is the never ending "will he or won't he" saga that Brett Favre has so embarrassingly become these last few seasons. We wish we could say this will be the last note on Favre you will ever read, but that would make us liars two hours later.
June 8, 2009
According to ESPN.com, the Vikings and coach Brad Childress have imposed a deadline of this week on Brett Favre for his decision on his status for next season. Favre has said he wants to test his shoulder to make sure he is capable of playing next year.

Our View:It seems like a strange move by the Vikes to set a deadline for Favre if they really want him. First, he won't be able to throw at full strength for another month or so, which makes it difficult to make a decision. Next, Favre has shown that when he gets pressured by a team, he tends to get angry and stick it to them. Don't be shocked if this deadline is lifted, because it is unlikely Favre will commit this week.
June 8, 2009
Peter King of SI.com is reporting that Brett Favre is expected to be able to being throwing in the next two weeks and to be throwing without pain in four weeks. It is expected that, if he shows he is healthy in July, that the Vikings will attempt to sign him to a one-year deal. "It'll be an upset if Favre doesn't attempt a comeback with Minnesota now," said King.

Our View:Peter King has been all over the Brett Favre saga, so everyone should believe what he has to say. It sounds like the surgery went down about 10-12 days ago, and if King is convinced Favre is coming back, the everyone else should be as well.
June 7, 2009
According to ESPN.com, Brett Favre underwent surgery on the torn biceps in his throwing arm.

Our View:The fact that Favre had the surgery likely means that he intends to try and play this season. He tried to avoid the procedure with cortisone shots and physical therapy, but the methods were ineffective. His comeback is now hinged on how well he heals and performs post surgery.
June 5, 2009
Brett Favre's agent (Bus Cook) stated today that Favre remains retired, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Cook talks to Favre every day, but did not disclose any new details regarding his ailing biceps.
May 25, 2009
The Vikings want Brett Favre to make a decision soon whether or not he intends to play another season in the NFL or hang up his cleats for good, according to Peter King of Sports Illustrated.

Our View:Favre's partially detached biceps tendon is also reportedly hanging on by a thread, but the arthroscopic surgery to repair it would be easy. The injury is also not expected to compromise Favre's velocity or accuracy if he decides to resume his career.
May 21, 2009
Vikings' head coach Brad Childress is interested in Brett Favre but is not optimistic he will be joining the team, according to KFAN.com. Childress said, "It was worth a conversation, and as far as I know he is still retired."

Our View:If Favre does not come out of retirement again to play for the Vikings, then Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels will compete for the starting gig at quarterback.
May 20, 2009
Brett Favre will reportedly meet with Vikings' head coach Brad Childress, according to ESPN.

Our View:The meeting with allegedly take place at some point later this week at an undisclosed location. There is a rumor that Favre is considering postponing his retirement for another campaign, and Childress wants to talk to him about joining the Vikings.
May 19, 2009
According to NFL.com, Brett Favre received a cortisone shot in his right shoulder and then threw the ball around last week.

Our View:Someone playing catch isn't usually news, but this is Brett Favre, so it turns heads. He still considers surgery on his balky shoulder a last resort, so it looks like the shots are going to have to work if he plans to un-retire once again this season.
May 18, 2009
Ed Werder of ESPN reports that Brett Favre does not consider surgery on his torn biceps tendon imminent. If he does not have the surgery, his return to the NFL takes a significant hit.

Our View:After nearly two days of telling us that Favre will have the surgery and subsequently sign with the Vikings, the Network actually decided to ask Brett about it. Stay tuned. Apparently you have no other choice. The NFL continues to be held hostage.
May 18, 2009
Brett Favre is reportedly slated to visit Dr. James Andrews in Alabama this week regarding surgery to repair his torn right triceps tendon, according to the Pioneer Press.

Our View:Favre would need 6-8 weeks of recovery time if he does in fact have surgery. The source also suggests that Favre will ink a deal with the Vikings if the operation if deemed successful, but that news should be regarded as speculation.
May 17, 2009
Bus Cook, the agent for Brett Favre, said that "there's absolutely no substance to all the speculation" in regards to Favre's unretirement, according to the Hattiesburg American.

Our View:There is zero chance of this statement putting this speculation to rest. Cook is not among our favorite agents as he also was a central figure in the endless line of Jay Cutler notes that bombarded us earlier in the offseason. However, if his true intentions are to try and kill this story, then he may be moving up the charts.
May 15, 2009
Rumors and speculation are swirling that Brett Favre may have more wrong with his right arm and shoulder than just the tearing in his biceps tendon, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports.

Our View:If there is something there, we assume Dr. James Andrews would surely find it. Favre does not want to have surgery and often balks at even an invasive exam. If he comes back, Favre may end up looking a lot like Chad Pennington.
May 14, 2009
Brett Favre met with Dr. James Andrews on Thursday to discuss his partially torn biceps, according to ESPN.com. Dr. Andrews discusses options with Favre on how to move forward with the injury.

Our View:The fact that Favre is meeting with the most renowned surgeon in the sports world is very telling about how serious he is about a comeback with the Vikings. Favre was given some exercises that could help the injury heal without surgery, and Favre will make a decision on surgery only if necessary. If he does not need to go under the knife, expect him to be wearing purple next season.
May 11, 2009
Vikings president Mark Wilf confirmed on Monday that Minnesota is interested in bringing Brett Favre out of retirement and as their starting quarterback for 2009, according to ESPN.com. "He's a Hall of Fame quarterback. He's a great competitor," Wilf said. "Ultimately, you'll have to ask Brett what his plans are, but sure there's interest in Brett Favre."

Our View:Though the Vikings' interest in the their former rival superstar quarterback hasn't exactly been the best kept secretly the past few weeks, Monday marks the first time that the organization's management has officially come out and expressed its interest in Favre. While there are still a whole bunch of questions to answered surrounding this case, one thing that has been expressed by Minnesota is that they'd like a decision from Favre by the end of the month, so his status should be pretty well known before anybody has to worry about whether or not to select him in their fantasy draft.
May 8, 2009
NFL.com reports that possibly retired quarterback Brett Favre did speak on the phone with Vikings head coach Brad Childress at least once this week.

Our View:The drama continues. Favre has not made a decision on whether or not he will "un-retire" but is definitely creating plenty of unnecessary media buzz. Apparently he hasn't made up his mind yet about anything, which means that the Yahoo! Sports report on Thursday saying that he was officially retired is now bogus. Expect Favre to milk this for all it's worth, and don't be surprised if he starts showing up in US Weekly or booking lunch dates on The View.
May 7, 2009
NFL.com confirms that Brett Favre and Vikings coach Brad Childress never met face to face, as was expected on Wednesday night.

Our View:Sigh. Even when it's over, it still goes on. The best way to put this, is that notes on Favre chronicle a story about no story.
May 7, 2009
Yahoo! reports that Brett Favre has informed the Vikings that he wants to stay retired. He is expected to publicly explain his decision soon.

Our View:Something must have changed in the past 24 hours, as Vikings coach Brad Childress was scheduled to have dinner with Favre in Mississippi last night, but he was at team headquarters at 8 a.m. this morning. Favre has not had a surgery for a torn biceps tendon that would seem necessary if he were to play again.
May 7, 2009
Updating an earlier report, Vikings' coach Brad Childress is at the team headquarters and is not in Mississippi meeting with retired quarterback Brett Favre, according to the Denver Post.

Our View:This further confirms that the news that Favre is considering coming out of retirement (again) to play for the Vikings is merely a rumor.
May 7, 2009
Brett Favre's agent (James Cook) is shooting down the rumor that the future Hall of Famer wants to come out of retirement again, according to the Arizona Republic. Cook said, "As far as I know he is retired and he has not told me he has changed his mind. I am on the golf course Tuesday and my phone was blowing up with all these messages. I said what in the world is all this stuff about Brett coming back?"

Our View:Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson will be pleased that Cook claims this is a rumor, as Favre was linked to the Vikings. Stay tuned for further developments regarding Favre.
May 6, 2009
The Jets continue to offer little in the way of commentary on the running Brett Favre saga, according to the NY Daily News. Particularly odd is the fact that Jets' GM Mike Tannenbaum hasn't discussed the matter with the press.

Our View:Enough already. Yes, the Favre saga has gotten to the point that we are now reporting that we have nothing to report. Don't figure that the absurdity will dissipate any time soon either.
May 6, 2009
Brett Favre has a tear in his biceps tendon which could hinder a deal with Minnesota, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Favre did not have postseason surgery and was the reason he retired. He said, "Physically, if I felt better, we may not be having this conversation. But I think that is more than anything the writing on the wall. I finally cannot throw the ball like I once threw it."

Our View:Favre would be motivated to play for the Vikings to get back at the Packers, who both play in the NFC North. If Favre is fit to play and inks a deal with Minnesota, the Vikings' receivers would benefit, namely deep threat Bernard Berrian.
May 5, 2009
ESPN's Ed Werder is reporting that Brett Favre is planning on meeting with Vikings' coach Brad Childress later this week at an undisclosed location.

Our View:The Favre to Minnesota rumors are running rampant now, and this is a huge story in the Favre saga. Stay tuned for updates on this situation, but it is looking more and more like Favre could be in purple next season.
May 5, 2009
According to ESPN, Brett Favre's response to multiple reports that he may come out of retirement was that "no," it's not going to happen. Newsday is reporting that the Jets don't believe that he'll return and that his next step is to sign a one-day contract with the Packers and then re-retire.

Our View:Minnesota has been the team most often mentioned as a potential suitor for Favre. Frankly, at this point we would rather see Sage Rosenfels under center for the Vikes. That said, something tells us this situation isn't quite over, so we will continue to track it.
May 4, 2009
Peter King of Sports Illustrated has been told that Brett Favre may still have the urge to play in the NFL.

Our View:Vikings' head coach Brad Childress recently commented that he would pursue Favre if he decided to play another campaign.
May 2, 2009
Vikings head coach Brad Childress received questions about quarterback Brett Favre on Friday, and he says the team may discuss the free agent in the future. "We haven't. It doesn't mean we won't," Childress informs the AP. "We talk about everything, from what's going on in the United States on the front page today... So, yeah, I'm sure we'll talk about that."

Our View:We didn't think forced unions were a part of American culture any more, but the media really seems to be pushing for a Favre-Vikings marriage. All Childress admitted here was that the team would probably bring up the topic in the future. Why wouldn't they discuss it?
April 30, 2009
ESPN reports that Brett Favre asked for his release from the Jets on more than one occasion. There is some speculation that he was eager to be granted his release in order to sign somewhere else.

Our View:The Vikings and Redskins may be possible destinations if Favre does get the itch to play again. He had a quarterback rating of 81 last season after tossing 22 touchdowns and 22 interceptions with the Jets. As a starter, he would hold some fantasy value although he will likely frustrate his owners as much as he will reward them.
April 29, 2009
The Jets released quarterback Brett Favre from the reserve/retired list on Tuesday. "Brett requested his release some time ago," general manager Mike Tannenbaum tells the New York Post. "He has not indicated any desire to return to football and he remains retired. We wish him the best." Favre is now free to sign with any team.

Our View:Favre has stated that he is still retired and isn't planning a return. Of course, we all know he reserves the right to change his mind.
March 29, 2009
New Jets' head coach Rex Ryan did not want Brett Favre despite saying the opposite, according to the NY Daily News. The first time Favre and Ryan spoke is when the future Hall of Famer called to say he was hanging up his cleats.

Our View:The Jets lost four of their last five games under the direction of Favre in 2008, and he threw nine interceptions over the span.
March 25, 2009
According to NFL.com, Brett Favre is slated to appear at Browns camp this season as a guest of his former coach Eric Mangini.

Our View:Don't worry, at this point in time Favre is still officially retired. We'll let you know if he gets a bug up his you-know-what and changes his mind.
March 15, 2009
Packers team president and CEO Mark Murphy said Saturday he anticipates the organization retiring Brett Favre's No. 4 jersey, but doesn't expect it to happen until the two parties resolve their strained relationship, according to the Associated Press. "I don't anticipate it his season," Murphy said. "Obviously we will do it. We've made that commitment. He deserves to have his number retired. I just think both sides need some time."

Our View:Murphy said the Packers consider Favre a long-term member of the Green Bay family and would love to honor Favre when the time is right and some reconciliation from last year's retirement debacle can be achieved.
February 16, 2009
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that the Vikings' owner Zygi Wilf says that he has no interest at all in signing Brett Favre should he become available this offseason.

Our View:In case you missed, Favre retired last week. However, some sources suggested that he would have interest in playing for the Vikings next season. Following Wilf's statement, don't count on it.
February 12, 2009
Brett Favre commented on his decision to hang up his cleats, for good this time, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Favre said, "I have family and friends who are like, 'All right, Brett. Is this the real deal? To me, it is. It is. Believe me. It has been a wonderful career, I could not ask for anything more. It was worth a shot for me to go to New York. I wish I could have played better down the stretch. I did not. Emotionally, I am OK with it." "It's time to leave."

Our View:Favre leaves the NFL the all-time leader in touchdown passes (464), completions (5,720), passing yards (65,127), regular-season victories (169) and interceptions (310). As of now, Kellen Clemens is atop the Jets' depth chart at quarterback, but the club does not have faith in him to be their starter.
February 11, 2009
The New York Daily News reports that Brett Favre has officially submitted his retirement papers to the NFL. He will in turn receive his one time severance pay from the league.

Our View:Favre never took this step last season, so apparently he is serious about walking away this time. The sunset is a beautiful one for Favre, and he will likely still have a variety of endorsement opportunities and analyst jobs offered to him in the immediate future.
February 11, 2009
Brett Favre has decided to retire from professional football, according to ESPN.com. "It sucks getting old. At 40 years old, your mind tells you that you can do all the things you could in your younger years but the body doesn't cooperate," Favre said.

Our View:Favre has decided he simply lacks the motivation to do what it takes to prepare to play a full NFL season. His 2009 campaign with the Jets ended poorly; he threw 22 touchdowns on the season, but tossed 22 interceptions as well. The Jets will now have an extra $13 million in salary cap space due to this move.
February 10, 2009
The Jets have hired John DeFilippo as their new assistant quarterbacks coach, according to Scout.com.

Our View:DeFilippo previously served two seasons as the Raiders' quarterbacks coach and also worked with the Giants as an offensive quality control assistant. He will now work under quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh in New York.
February 4, 2009
The Jets have hired Matt Cavanaugh as their new quarterbacks coach, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View:Cavanaugh had previously been at the University of Pittsburgh since 2004, where he served as offensive coordinator. He has also worked in the NFL as the Ravens' offensive coordinator before his position at Pitt.
February 2, 2009
NFL.com reports that the Jets would like to have a decision from Brett Favre regarding his future prior to the NFL combine in a few weeks.

Our View:The Jets are in an awkward spot with their quarterback position, as many feel that Kellen Clemens is still not ready to be a No. 1 quarterback. Favre has another year left on his contract, but he could very well decide to retire again.
February 1, 2009
Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum will not meet with quarterback Brett Favre for at least another two weeks, according to ESPN. Favre has another year left on his contract, but he is wrestling with the thought of retiring - again.

Our View:Favre will likely have to make a commitment to all of the Jets offseason workouts in order for them to bring him back next season. He caught some criticism from teammates for his awkward fit with the team after he was dealt to the Jets late last offseason.
January 31, 2009
The Minnesota Vikings might be the only team that Brett Favre would be willing to play for next season, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Our View:It's been widely rumored that Favre is done, and will retire. Of course, he did that last season, only to come back, so Favre's future will be speculated on until next season begins.
January 26, 2009
The New York Post reports that according to Sports Illustrated's Peter King, Brett Favre is done with football. "I think he's had enough," King, a trusted confidant of Favre's, said Monday on ESPN's "Pardon the Interruption."

Our View:King said he talked to Farve three weeks ago, before the Jets hired new head coach Rex Ryan. According to King, Jets doctors recommended Favre undergo surgery on his torn biceps muscle if he intended to play next season. Favre has declined to have surgery.
January 21, 2009
The New York Post reports that Jets quarterback Brett Favre will not play for the AFC in the Pro Bowl due to shoulder soreness.

Our View:Favre didn't deserve to play in the game anyway, and now he won't. He threw a whopping 22 interceptions, and hurt the Jets with his play down the stretch.
January 17, 2009
The NY Post indicates that the Jets are unlikely to pursue fired Buccaneers' coach Jon Gruden.

Our View:The Jets' favorite candidate to replace Eric Mangini at head coach is believed to be Ravens' defensive coordinator Rex Ryan.
January 8, 2009
Brett Favre is in no rush to make a decision about playing in 2009. "I have the ability to turn it off just like that," Favre informs ESPN.com. "I don't feel I have anything else to prove." Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum told Favre to take some time away from the game. "He said he's not going to bother me for three or four weeks," Favre adds. "He told me to do whatever and he'd give me a call in a month. Maybe I will tell him my answer that day."

Our View:Hey, take your time, No. 4. Why not wait until June or July? It's not like the Jets have to make any plans between now and training camp.
January 5, 2009
Contrary to an earlier media report, Brian Schottenheimer is not the leading candidate to replace Eric Mangini as the head coach of the Jets, according to Scout.com.

Our View:It is true that Schottenheimer is a candidate, but it is too early for the Jets to pick a favorite.
January 4, 2009
Brett Favre is leaning towards retirement, according to ESPN.

Our View:After last offseason, who knows how many times we'll go back and forth with this story this year, but it might be easier for him to let go since he's not nearly as attached to the Jets as he was to the Packers. We'll let you know the next time he changes his mind or officially retires. And if he finds an option other than playing again or retiring, we'll let you know that too. It's hard to put much past him at this point.
January 1, 2009
Jets owner Woody Johnson and GM Mike Tannenbaum have privately intimated that they wouldn't necessarily have an issue if Brett Favre decides to retire even though their public pronouncements have said otherwise, according to The Star Ledger.

Our View:The report is anonymous (our favorite kind), but there are quotes even though there is no name attached. Favre is a media magnet, always has been, so expect about 28 more reports about what may or may not be happening before we get an definitive statement on whether or not he will return in 2009.
January 1, 2009
The Jets will check in with since fired coach Mike Shanahan to see if he might be interested in joining the Jets, according to The Star Ledger.

Our View:The Jets are basically kicking the tires on every viable candidate, and Shanahan is at the top of their, and pretty much every other NFL teams, wish list.
January 1, 2009
Newsday reports that an unnamed Jets player was critical of Brett Favre recently. "There was a lot of resentment in the room about him," the source said. "He never socialized with us, never went to dinner with anyone." He accused the quarterback of being "distant" and unwilling to integrate himself with the team after he was acquired. He apparently spent most of training camp and the preseason in a specially designated office rather than the locker room.

Our View:This latest announcement comes on the heels of Thomas Jones' interview where he blamed turnovers for the Jets late season collapse. Favre will reportedly take until the end of February to make a decision on his future, but it seems that his teammates are not so eager to see him return. He has at least one more year left on his contract.
