Newsbreakers

The Sporting News is reporting that running back Shaun Alexander has reiterated that he is not retired and that he wants to play this season. Alexander believes some team will take a chance on him at some point this season.

Our View:Some team took a chance on Alexander last season, and the Redskins did not benefit from his 2.2 yard average over 11 carries. Now Alexander is another year older, and he has even less value than he did last season. There may be a team willing to give him a chance this season, but they shouldn't expect much in return.

32-year-old running back Shaun Alexander is not ready to hang up his cleats, according to NFL.com. He said, "I feel before the season is over, I think somebody will go down and they will say, 'We want somebody who can score some touchdowns and make some things happen. They will say, Let's go get Shaun."

Our View:Alexander only averaged 2.2 yards over 11 brief rushing attempts with Washington last season, and the former MVP does not merit fantasy attention despite his belief that he can still play in the NFL.

Shaun Alexander told the Redskins website that he would like to return to the team in 2009.

Our View:The former MVP wants to play but has not been a fantasy factor for several years due to injuries and weight issues. It will be interesting to see if any team will take a flyer on Alexander.

Shaun Alexander has been released by the Redskins, according to the Washington Post.

Our View:Alexander only averaged 2.2 yards per carry, and the team decided to let him go. He held no fantasy value while buried on the depth chart behind Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts.
November 13, 2008
Running back Shaun Alexander practiced with the Redskins first-team offense on Thursday, as Clinton Portis sat out, and Ladell Betts was a limited participant, according to the Washington Times.

Our View:It's a good bet that Alexander gets some carries on Sunday against the Giants, but likely not enough to make a difference in fantasy leagues. Even if he, theoretically, were to get 20 carries, he'd still be a poor option against New York.
