November 2, 2008
Jeff Garcia completed 31-of-43 passes for 339 yards and a score in Sunday's exciting 30-27 win over the Chiefs.

Our View:He has topped 300 passing yards for the second time this season, and is averaging 292 yards over his last three games. He is worth a look in deeper leagues if you need depth at the position.
October 21, 2008
Jeff Garcia has been nominated for the FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week award after completing 27-of-36 passes for 310 yards in Sunday night’s 20-10 victory against the Seahawks, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:Also under consideration for the weekly honor are the Bills' Trent Edwards and Matt Schaub of the Texans. Garcia's solid performance will help in his bid to hold off Brian Griese for the starting gig at quarterback.
October 19, 2008
Buccaneers quarterback Jeff Garcia passed for 310 yards and a score in the Bucs' 20-10 win over the Seahawks.

Our View:Garcia looks like he just might be the Bucs starter for the rest of the year if he continues to play like he did against the Seahawks.
October 12, 2008
During head coach Jon Gruden’s presser after Tampa Bay’s win over Carolina, he was asked what would go into his decision about deciding on a starter for next week. Gruden responded by saying Garcia would be his starter in Sunday’s game against Seattle, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:The Seahawks represent a fairly soft match-up, but Garcia is nothing more than a No. 2 fantasy quarterback at this stage of his career.
October 12, 2008
Veteran Jeff Garcia will start at quarterback for Tampa Bay in place of Brian Griese, who can't go due to an elbow injury.

Our View:Garcia has a tough match-up against Carolina, who rank 4th in the NFL in total defense and 3rd in passing defense.
October 10, 2008
Jeff Garcia will likely get the starting nod at quarterback in Week 6 against Carolina, according to the AP. Brian Griese missed practice Friday and when asked if Garcia will start, coach Jon Gruden answered, "That’s the way it looks right now, yes."

Our View:Garcia is not a favorable fantasy option against Carolina, especially with Joey Galloway expected to miss his fourth straight game with a foot sprain.
October 8, 2008
The AP reports that coach Jon Gruden would not say who would be the starting quarterback during Wednesday’s media session, but all indications pointed to Jeff Garcia. Garcia took the majority of snaps in practice on Wednesday and will likely start Sunday against the Carolina Panthers if Brian Griese (arm) is not ready.

Our View:He was forced into action last Sunday when Griese left in the third quarter with a bruised elbow and a right shoulder strain. The 38-year-old Garcia completed 13-of-17 passes for 93 yards and a TD in the 16-13 loss to the Denver Broncos.
October 7, 2008
Jeff Garcia may be back in at quarterback in Tampa Bay for the injured and struggling Brian Griese, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:Griese had all of 88 yards passing last week, and is nursing a sore shoulder, so Garcia may get the call against Carolina. Do not expect huge fantasy production if he does return.
October 2, 2008
Buccaneers quarterback Jeff Garcia has been bumped up to the No. 2 quarterback and has been taking snaps with the first-team offense, as coach Jon Gruden is not happy with Brian Griese's interceptions, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:Griese was anointed the starter in a surprise move by Gruden, but has tossed six interceptions the last two games.
September 28, 2008
Week 4 inactives: QB Jeff Garcia (3rd), QB Josh Johnson, FB B.J. Askew, LB Matt McCoy, G Davin Joseph, OT James Lee, WR Joey Galloway, and DT Ryan Sims.

Our View:The good news is that linebacker Derrick Brooks is active. With Joey Galloway out, fantasy owners can look to Antonio Bryant, Michael Clayton, and Ike Hilliard.
September 21, 2008
Buccaneers inactives: QB Jeff Garcia (3rd), QB Josh Johnson, CB Aqib Talib, RB Michael Bennett, G Davin Joseph, T James Lee, WR Joey Galloway, DT Greg Peterson.

Our View:It appears that quarterback Jeff Garcia remains in head coach Jon Gruden's doghouse. Brian Griese will start against Chicago this week. The other notable player on this list is Joey Galloway, who is out due to a foot injury.
September 15, 2008
Coach Jon Gruden denies the rumors that Jeff Garcia is being shopped, according to the St. Petersburg Times. When asked if he or anyone in the organization discussed Garcia with other teams, Gruden answered, "I have not. I have not talked to anybody about Jeff. There are a lot of reports out there and if someone ever came to me that had issued a report, I would be happy to address it. But there's a lot of reports out there that are erroneous and incorrect."

Our View:Brian Griese is expected to start in Week 3 against the Bears, and Garcia may not get another shot to start if Griese fares well, assuming he isn't traded as the rumors suggest.
September 15, 2008
Coach Jon Gruden has declared that Jeff Garcia's role will be determined week-to-week, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:Brian Griese led the team to a win over Atlanta Sunday, and is expected to remain the starting quarterback for Week 3 against the Bears, his previous team.
September 14, 2008
FOXSports.com reports that the Bucs called the 49ers this week to see if they were interested in acquiring Garcia.

Our View:The 49ers passed on the inquiry, but this is further news to suggest that Garcia may have seen his last stand in Tampa Bay. Brian Griese takes the reins at quarterback in Week 2.
September 11, 2008
Jeff Garcia believes he is healthy enough to practice and play this week and disagrees with coach Jon Gruden's decision to bench him in favor of Brian Griese, according to the St. Petersburg Times. He said, "Right now, having only played one game, I would've liked the opportunity to battle through whatever I'm going through. But coach made that decision early in the week and I have to live with it."

Our View:Garcia only registered a 71.3 efficiency rating in the Buccaneers' Week 1 loss to the Saints, and there is a rumor circulating that the Buccaneers are trying to unload Garcia for whatever they can get for him, which would indicate they are content with Brian Griese as the starter.
September 10, 2008
Previous reports said that Jeff Garcia was questionable for Week 2, but FoxSports.com is now reporting that Garcia is out against the Falcons due to an ankle sprain.

Our View:With Garcia out for the Bucs, veteran backup Brian Griese will get the start.
September 8, 2008
Jeff Garcia will be questionable for Week 2 due to a sprained ankle, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:If he cannot go, then Brian Griese would get the call against Atlanta, who looked solid in their win over Detroit.
September 7, 2008
Quarterback Jeff Garcia was listed on the NFL injury report as probable with a calf injury, but will start against New Orleans.

Our View:This is a pretty solid match-up for Garcia, given wide receiver Joey Galloway's past success against the Saints.
September 5, 2008
The Tampa Tribune indicates that Jeff Garcia is nursing a sprained right pinky finger. Garcia said, "I actually sprained it in the one exhibition game I played. My hand came down on someone’s shoulder pad and I sprained it. But it’s fine really. It’s not a problem at all. I don’t even know why it would be an issue."

Our View:He hasn't been limited at practice and the team is not concerned with the ailment, so he should be fine to start Sunday at New Orleans.
September 3, 2008
Jeff Garcia didn't see his first action of the preseason until the team's third exhibition game, and as expected, he was rusty. Rototimes sources report that not only was Garcia intercepted twice in the first half, he could have been intercepted on two other occasions. One of the interceptions was in the endzone from a redzone position. He did throw a touchdown pass to Michael Clayton. The veteran quarterback needed to play against Houston in the preseason finale, but didn't.

Our View:Rototimes ources report that while he's veteran savvy, he's unprepared for the regular season after only 32 snaps in one preseason game. Additionally the 38-year-old depends on being mobile and he's still gimpy from a Training Camp with calf injury.
August 22, 2008
Jeff Garcia will start on Saturday against Jacksonville, which will mark his first appearance of the preseason, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:He is still recovering from his right calf strain, and his appearance is expected to be brief. He is getting 60 percent of the work in practice, and looks to be on pace to start in Week 1. Even if healthy, Garcia only ranks as a No. 3 fantasy quarterback.
August 13, 2008
It is doubtful that Tampa Bay quarterback Jeff Garcia will play in the team's preseason game Sunday against New England because he is still suffering from a strained calf, according to PewterReport.com.

Our View:Bucs coach Jon Gruden wants Garcia to be able to practice before throwing him in a game, so until that happens, expect Garcia to be sidelined.
August 11, 2008
Jeff Garcia, who is dealing with a calf strain, did some light throwing at practice Monday, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Garcia sat out the past eight days of practice due to the injury.

Our View:It is encouraging to see him practicing, but he is still yet to participate in position drills with the rest of the quarterbacks.
August 5, 2008
Tampa Bay quarterback Jeff Garcia , out since Thursday with a calf strain, said Tuesday morning that he doubts he will play in Saturday’s preseason opener against the Dolphins, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:Garcia said he is improving and he didn’t see missing much more time, but admitted being frustrated by the injury.
August 4, 2008
Jeff Garcia is expected to miss a few more days of camp due to his strained calf, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Our View:He noted he is feeling better, and the injury is believed to be minor.
August 1, 2008
Jeff Garcia is being listed as day-to-day as he will attempt to rest his strained calf to avoid a more significant injury, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:Garcia will be held out of action for at least two days, but the injury doesn't appear to be very significant at this point so little concern is warranted at the moment.
July 31, 2008
Suffering from a rash of injuries, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have decided to scrap Friday's practice, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:They will still hold one special teams practice later in the day, but that's all. The team has seen players like Garcia, Joey Galloway, Jeff Faine and others go down, and want to limit any more injuries.
July 31, 2008
Updating a previous item, Bucs quarterback Jeff Garcia suffered a strained calf, according to PewterReport.com. "We just have to get the information. [Garcia] might not miss anytime at all. Right now, I would say until we evaluate it further, I wouldn't say much at all," said head coach Jon Gruden.

Our View:The Bucs don't seem to be worried about it, with many teams now about a week into camp, this is about the time guys will go down with strains and pulls.
July 31, 2008
The Tampa Tribune reports that Jeff Garcia left a non-contact drill suddenly with an apparent leg injury. The injury appeared to be in his calf and, although limping noticeably, walked into the locker room under his own power after being carted off the field.

Our View:The severity of the injury is unknown but Luke McCown, Chris Simms or Brian Griese will likely battle for work with the first team until he can return. However, a serious injury to Garcia could cause Tampa to amp up its bid for Brett Favre.
July 28, 2008
Jeff Garcia has returned to the Buccaneers after taking a few days away from the team to attend a family engagement, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:Garcia will work as the Buccaneers starter, unless the club ends up with Brett Favre.
July 22, 2008
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers report quarterback Jeff Garcia has been officially excused from the first weekend of training camp, commencing this Friday, according to the St. Petersburgh Times.

Our View:Garcia, 38, has been excused by the Bucs to attend a reunion of players to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Gavilan College's 1973 national championship team in Gilroy, California. Rumors of continued contract bickering seem to ooze from the story, but the beat reporters in town suggest there is no need for alarm. Garcia does want a new deal and has not gotten the negotiating conclusion he stated he wanted to attend camp, but the team seems confident he will show. We'll keep you posted.
June 30, 2008
Jeff Garcia wants a new contract, and should he not receive one, he has hinted that he might be a holdout, reports Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:The Bucs clearly need Garcia to be the starting QB, despite the plethora of other players at that position on the roster. This doesn't sound like a serious situation quite yet, but there is still a few weeks to go before training camp starts.
June 5, 2008
Jeff Garcia spoke Wednesday of possibly retiring, but it turns out he was referencing the 2009 season and not this year, according to the St. Petersberg Tribune.

Our View:Garcia is ticked off that the Bucs haven't reworked his contract, he is due a little less than $3 million dollars this year, and he hasn't been shy about expressing his displeasure to the press. However, don't panic, Garcia won't be sailing off into the sunset until at least the 2009 season.
June 4, 2008
Tampa Bay passer Jeff Garcia spoke with reporters today and suggested that frustration over the lack of progress in contract negotiations has led him to consider retirement, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Our View:The story from Talk quotes a television update from NFL Network's Adam Schefter, noting Garcia is visibly upset and, with one year left on his current contract (a contract he no longer values), is more than happy to walk off and call it a day. Of course, it could be simple posturing, but Garcia had better watch his step. Coach Jon Gruden seems to carry a ton of faith in Luke McCown and there are other options on the depth chart. Garcia is good... but he is old and he may not be in position to play this game.
May 27, 2008
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jeff Garcia may be unhappy with his contract, but he intends to fulfill it and will not miss a day of training camp, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:Garcia has voluntarily participated in every offseason workout. He has one year left on a deal that will pay him a $2-million salary.
May 22, 2008
Jeff Garcia will more than likely be able to work out his contract concerns with the Bucs, according to the Tampa Tribune. “I’m very confident that it will all work itself out,’’ HC Jon Gruden said. “He was clutch for us. He’s a critical football player for us and hopefully it all works out.’’

Our View:Garcia managed the ball extremely well last year, and while his numbers certainly weren't eye-popping, he did exactly what Gruden wants him to do. Look for Garcia to be behind center for Week 1, but also don't expect much more than you say out of him last season.
May 14, 2008
Owner Bruce Allen talked about Jeff Garcia's contract situation on Wednesday. He doesn't mind that the quarterback has been public about his issues with an expiring deal. "Each player has to handle his business how he sees fit," Allen tells the St. Petersburg Times. "Jeff, for the last five years -- it's been well-documented -- he's been with five teams. I know he enjoyed the great success with coach Gruden and wants that to continue. That's not bad news, that's good news. We've got seven months to free agency and we've got plenty of time."

Our View:Allen is taking the line that most of us probably would in his situation. There's no way the Bucs want to commit to the 38-year-old Garcia beyond this season, and we'd be surprised if they extended his contract before the calendar turns to 2009.
May 13, 2008
Jeff Garcia hinted that he may hold out if his contract demands are not met, according to the Tampa Tribune. Garcia said, "There might come a time when I might have to stand up. I hate to do that to jeopardize my teammates because they’re out here, and I don’t want to let them down in any sort of way. But at some point you just want to see the respect from up top." He is entering the final year of a two-year deal worth $7 million and is reportedly seeking an extension that will bring his total payout to the league average for starters, which is around $7 million.

Our View:Garcia will be 39 at the start of the 2009 season, and the team could be hesitant to shell out a new deal for him. Garcia held a solid 94.6 efficiency rating in 2007, but is close to the end of the line in his NFL career.
April 9, 2008
Jeff Garcia wants a new contract, according to the Tampa Tribune. Garcia stated on Tuesday that he is disappointed the team hasn't been willing to reward him with a new contract that would enable him to finish his career with the Buccaneers. He added, "At this point in my career, I'm no longer 24 or 25 saying, 'I'm going to prove to you I deserve this.' I feel like I've proved throughout my career. And I feel like at this time, it's time to just work with me, and you know what I bring to the team. You know what I've done for the team, and you know how much more I can do. And now I have a year under my system." Garcia maintained a solid 94.6 efficiency rating in 2007, but is nearing the end of his career.
February 10, 2008
Jeff Garcia was effective despite his interception in Sunday's Pro Bowl connecting with Terrell Owens for the go-ahead fourth quarter score. Garcia was 8-of-10 for 117 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Our View:
February 10, 2008
Jeff Garcia hopes to begin talks with the Bucs about extending his contract with the team so he can end his career there. "...I feel like what I'm attempting to grasp or what coach Gruden would like me to grasp is still out there. I'm still working to get to that point, but it feels good to be challenged in those ways." No QB has been the starter for the Bucs in back-to-back seasons since 2002-04 (Brad Johnson), and with the team trying to lure Jake Plummer out of retirement, it's no sure thing that Garcia will be the starter next season, though a whole lot of things would have to happen to knock him out of the role since he is clearly the team's top option if healthy.
