The Cardinals denied Edgerrin James' request to be released, according to John Clayton of ESPN. His agent (Drew Rosenhaus) said, "We spoke with GM Rod Graves because Edgerrin still believes he is a 1,000-yard back and he is healthy and he is still capable of being a 1,000-yard back for a team. He is not playing now, and there are teams that are banged up at the running back position that he could help. We didn't get the answer we were hoping for."

Our View:James holds little fantasy value right now while stuck behind rookie Tim Hightower on the depth chart.

Edgerrin James reportedly asked the Cardinals to release him after being unseated from the starting job at running back by rookie Tim Hightower, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Our View:If he had been released, he could have been claimed on waivers by a team like the Bengals or Broncos. He will make $5 million with the Cardinals in 2009, the final year of his contract.

Edgerrin James is supporting rookie Tim Hightower, who unseated James as the Cardinals' starting running back Sunday against the Rams, according to the East Valley Tribune. James did not have a carry in the game and said, "It’s been brewing for a while. I’m not surprised. I’m happy for Tim. I expected him to have a big day. We knew we should have a big day running the ball regardless of who was in there."

Our View:James is only averaging 3.5 yards per carry this season, with only one 100-yard performance. Hightower looks to be the best option for the Cardinals right now, and is worth scooping up if still available on the waiver wire.

It's possible that Edgerrin James could lose his starting job to rookie Tim Hightower in the coming days or weeks, according to the East Valley Tribune. Coach Ken Whisenhunt isn't saying that a switch is coming, but he isn't shooting the idea down, either. "I think we've shown we're going to play the players who give us the best chance to win," he said. "We did that with the quarterback. We've done that at linebacker, we've done it with the offensive line. At a point where we feel Tim gives us the best chance to win, then absolutely. But I don't think you can judge it just based on (Sunday's) game." After hearing that Whisenhunt suggested that Hightower was due for a heavier workload, James replied, "That's the way it was heading anyway, so it's cool."

Our View:James is having a bad year and has just 16 carries for 46 yards over the last two weeks. Hightower has averaged just 2.7 yards per carry, but he has scored a half dozen touchdowns.

Arizona running back Edgerrin James is not thrilled with his role being reduced, as Tim Hightower and J.J. Arrington are becoming a bigger part of the offense, according to ESPN.com. "I don't know what's going on. I'm just here, just going to ride it out and get to the playoffs and, hey, that may be it right there," James said.

Our View:In two of the last three games, James has carried nine times for 29 yards. He isn't nearly the back he once was, which happens to runners when they get to age 30, which is how old the former Miami star is. Don't expect huge fantasy contributions from here on out, but he'll still get enough touches to be useful.
