The Chiefs officially placed Priest Holmes on the Reserve/Retired List on Friday. A press release sent by Josh Looney, Kansas City Chiefs Public Relations, reported that Chiefs President and GM Carl Peterson announced that the club will honor three-time Pro Bowl RB Priest Holmes during a retirement ceremony during a 2008 home game.

Priest Holmes announced his retirement on Wednesday. "I have truly been blessed with the opportunity to play in the National Football League," Holmes tells the team's official web site. "I will be forever grateful to the Hunt Family and the Chiefs organization for the opportunity to come to Kansas City, where the community embraced me from day one." This past Sunday, the 34-year-old running back aggravated his neck issues that caused him to sit out from midway through the 2005 season until midway through the current campaign. With Larry Johnson (foot) also out, rookie Kolby Smith will presumably start against the Raiders in Week 12.

According to FOXSports.com, Priest Holmes re-injured his neck in Sunday's loss to the Colts and his career is in doubt. With Larry Johnson already ruled out for Week 12, this would set up Kolby Smith to get the assignment against Oakland this week.

As expected, Larry Johnson was inactive Sunday, so Priest Holmes started for the Chiefs. He was ineffective, though, carrying the ball 20 times for just 65 yards. He caught two passes for another 14 yards but failed to cross the goal line. Rookie Kolby Smith had only two carries, so you can safely expect Holmes to carry the rushing load for as long as LJ is down and Holmes can stay up on his feet.

If the Chiefs are without Larry Johnson in Week 10, rookie running back Kolby Smith will be asked to help out potential starter Priest Holmes. “We’ve got to do it by committee a little bit,” head coach Herm Edwards tells the Kansas City Star. “I don’t see Priest carrying the ball more than 15 times. Kolby’s going to have to carry it some. He’s played more football this year, counting the preseason, than Priest has. You don’t want to wear Priest out.”
