Newsbreakers
September 11, 2009
Shawn Springs was limited in Friday's practice with the Patriots, according to the Providence Journal. He is recovering from a knee injury.

Our View:Springs performed well in his final year with the Redskins in 2008, and the Bills' passing attack could benefit if the veteran cornerback is hindered or unable to start Monday's game at Gillette Stadium.
August 17, 2009
Shawn Springs returned to practice Monday, according to the Boston Globe. He missed time for an undisclosed reason.

Our View:Springs will start at cornerback this season, but only recorded seven interceptions over his last four campaigns in Washington, and does not look to hold much value for IDP leagues.
June 24, 2009
According to the Boston Globe, Shawn Springs will be used as the "matchup corner" this season.

Our View:Springs will face off against bigger receivers(i.e. T.O. and the like) and line up on the left side. Leigh Bodden will start at right corner back. This is considered to be an upgrade in coverage from 2008.

Shawn Springs' deal with the Patriots includes a $2.7MM signing bonus and workout bonuses of $100,000 per year, according to the Boston Globe. It is a three-year contract, with base salaries of $1.75MM in 2009, $2.25MM in 2010, and $2.75MM in 2011.

Our View:The Patriots are counting on the 34-year-old vet to handle the No. 1 role at cornerback vacated by Asante Samuel.
March 9, 2009
Shawn Springs' deal with the Patriots is worth around $10.5MM over three years, according to ESPN. He can rake an extra $2.5MM in incentives.

Our View:Springs is still a solid NFL cornerback, and will fill the Patriots' need for veteran help at the position.
March 5, 2009
Cornerback Shawn Springs has reached a contract agreement with the New England Patriots, according to NFL.com.

Our View:This is a typical Patriots move, signing a veteran player who still has a few solid years left. The Patriots gave up the second-most touchdown passes in the league last season, 27, so they were in need of another playmaker in the secondary.
March 5, 2009
Free-agent cornerback Shawn Springs is expected to sign with the New England Patriots, the Providence Journal reports. Springs took visits to both New England and Philadelphia this week and was rumored to have been close to a deal with the Eagles.

Our View:Springs will provide veteran leadership in the Pats' defensive backfield and should be a solid defender of the passing game.
March 5, 2009
Free-agent cornerback Shawn Springs left Philadelphia Wednesday without a contract offer from the Eagles, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View:An Eagles source noted the team may still offer Springs a deal, but that neither side was in a rush to get a one done.
March 3, 2009
Cornerback Shawn Springs is scheduled to arrive in Philadelphia Tuesday evening and will speak to reporters on Wednesday, ESPN.com reports.

Our View:If reports are accurate, it seems inevitable that Springs, recently released in Washington, will leave Philadelphia with at least an offer on the table, if not an agreement on a contract.
March 2, 2009
The National Football Post reports that cornerback Shawn Springs will visit the Saints on Tuesday.

Our View:Springs has played 11 seasons in the league and it doesn't look like he has much left. He has started only 29 games over the last three seasons due to injuries. He recently visited New England but, obviously, left without a contract.
March 1, 2009
The Providence Journal reports that cornerback Shawn Springs is scheduled to visit New England on Sunday.

Our View:Springs, who was released by the Redskins on Friday, played in nine games last season, registering 36 tackles. A corner throughout his 11-year career, Springs may be counted upon to play at the safety position in New England.
February 28, 2009
The Saints and Patriots are believed to be interested in Shawn Springs following his release by the Redskins, according to the Washington Post.

Our View:Springs is still a solid NFL cornerback, and a few other clubs should garner interest in him as well.
February 27, 2009
The Redskins have released Shawn Springs, according to the Washington Post. He is now an unrestricted free agent.

Our View:Springs is still a solid NFL cornerback, and should find work with another club.
January 14, 2009
Shawn Springs has been selected as of one of ten Washingtonians of the Year by Washingtonian Magazine, according to the Washington Post.

Our View:Springs was recognized for his community and charity work. It is uncertain if Springs will return to the Redskins in 2009.
January 4, 2009
Shawn Springs might return to the Redskins next year if they deal Carlos Rogers, according to ProFootballWeekly.com.

Our View:Springs would have to renegotiate his salary in order to come back but it may be worth it to play in a system he already knows.
