Newsbreakers
November 20, 2009
Rudy Gay had a monster night for the Grizzlies on Friday in their 102-97 win over the Sixers. Gay finished with 33 points and ten rebounds in the win.

Our View:Gay is having an outstanding campaign thus far in 2009, as he was averaging 20.5 points and 6.1 rebounds heading into tonight's contest. He is a nice all-around player, and he should continue to be a fantasy force all season.
November 5, 2009
Rudy Gay scored a game-high 29 points in Wednesday's 113-105 loss at Golden State. He also chipped in eight boards, one assist and one steal.

Our View:The young forward is playing very well right now, as he averages 25 points and 10.5 boards over his last two games. He will try to remain hot Friday night in a tough game against the Lakers at the Staples Center.
November 2, 2009
According to the Twitter page of NBA writer Adrian Wojnarowki, the Grizzlies and forward Rudy Gay were unable to come to an agreement on a contract extension. Gay will become a restricted free agent following this season.

Our View:Gay was asking for $12 million per year over three or five season, and the Grizzlies wouldn't budge off $10 million. With multiple teams expecting to have plenty of cap space heading into next year, this could very well be Gay's final season with the team.
October 31, 2009
The Memphis Grizzlies and forward Rudy Gay have restarted contract extension talks, according to SI.com. The team wants to get Gay locked up before the deadline on Monday.

Our View:The team met with Gay's agent on Friday, and they will continue to tal right up until the deadline. The team wants Gay be to around for a long time, but it remains to be seen what Gay is going to want. He is a very good player who probably wouldn't mind getting out of Memphis, but expect him to stay for a long time.
October 21, 2009
Rudy Gay led the way for the Grizzlies on Wednesday, but his 28 points weren't enough as Memphis fell to Miami 99-93. Gay added nine boards and an assist in the loss.

Our View:This was Gay's second huge game in a row, as he put in 25 points on Saturday in his team's win. The outcome wasn't as favorable tonight, but his performance was even better. It looks like good things are in store for Gay this season.
October 17, 2009
Rudy Gay was the most dominant man on the court in Saturday's 115-94 preseason win over the Pistons, draining a game-high 25 points.

Our View:Gay had seven rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots in the contest as well. His all-around effort was highlighted by a 7-of-10 shooting performance from the field that included a 2-of-3 effort from downtown. He should be a fine fantasy selection once again this season.
October 14, 2009
Rudy Gay struggled with his shot a bit on Wednesday, but he still managed to score 13 points in the Grizzles' 111-96 loss to the Hawks. Gay was only 4-of-12 from the field in the game.

Our View:Gay helped out in other aspects of the game, grabbing two rebounds and adding 5 assists, a blocked shot, and a steal. He promises to be a nice fantasy scorer, and he showed last season that he can give other stats to fantasy owners as well.
April 10, 2009
Rudy Gay scored 20 points in the Grizzlies 106-89 win over the Suns. He totaled six rebounds, three assists and two steals as well.

Our View:Gay has now been good for at least 18 points in his last seven straight games. He's also racked up ten steals over that stretch.
April 4, 2009
Rudy Gay continued his strong play in Saturday's 107-102 win in Milwaukee. He finished the game with 26 points, four rebounds, three steals, and three treys while shooting 10-of-17 from the field.

Our View:Amazingly, this current four-game stretch is the first time this season that he has scored more than 20 points on four consecutive occasions. In his last three games, he has accumulated 25, 27, and 26 points. Although he has not met expectations for most of the season, there's little doubt that his fantasy owners are enjoying his current contributions as many leagues are in the playoffs.
April 3, 2009
Rudy Gay led the Grizzlies to a 107-102 home win over Dallas on Friday night with 27 points and 10 rebounds.

Our View:Gay followed up his 25-point performance on Wednesday with another solid game, giving Memphis back-to-back wins for the first time since early February. In fact, this marks just the second time all season Gay has scored 25 or more points in consecutive games.
April 1, 2009
Rudy Gay led the Grizzlies with 25 points on Wednesday as they collected a rare victory, knocking off the Wizards 112-107. Gay has six rebounds as well.

Our View:Gay has been inconsistent this season. He's topped 20 points eight times over the last month, but over that same stretch he has put up totals of 8, 8, 10, 12 and 14. Owners would like more solidified production.
March 31, 2009
Rudy Gay had 21 points, five rebounds, and five blocked shots as the Grizzlies beat the Warriors 114-109 on Monday.

Our View:Gay has been one of the more frustrating players to own in fantasy this season, as many expected him to take a big step forward in his third season. One of those steps was expected to come in his blocked shots total, but he is averaging less than a block per game. Tonight's performance certainly makes you wonder if he couldn't take that leap in his fourth year.
March 20, 2009
Rudy Gay scored a game-high 23 points on 7-of-14 shooting in Memphis' 96-84 loss at New Orleans.

Our View:The 22-year-old Gay remains a steady performer amid Memphis' disastrous season. He has now scored 20.5 points and pulled down 5.2 rebounds over his last seven games.
March 18, 2009
Rudy Gay scored 30 but the Grizzlies blew a 10 point lead in the fourth quarter and lost a nail-biter to the Nuggets.

Our View:Gay had a nice game, but still isn't giving fantasy owners what they are looking for in terms of overall production. He hit 13-of-21 shots in this contest however.
March 16, 2009
Rudy Gay had 17 points, 11 boards, and three blocks as the Grizzlies fell to Portland 103-92 on Monday.

Our View:Unfortunately, the forward hit just 7-of-21 shots. Gay has gotten more aggressive in March, but it really has yet to translate into his overall production. We're still waiting for him to take the next step, but it looks as if we'll have to wait until next season.
March 13, 2009
Rudy Gay scored a team-high 26 points on 9-of-20 shooting in Memphis' 102-92 loss to Boston at TD Banknorth Garden on Friday.

Our View:The mighty Grizz are only 4-7 this season when Gay goes for 25-plus points. But that's what happens when your team has five different losing streaks of at least four games.
March 8, 2009
Rudy Gay scored a team-high 21 points on 9-of-20 shooting as the Grizzlies fell 93-83 to the Rockets on Sunday.

Our View:Gay performed admirably, also posting five rebounds, one assist, and one block, despite suffering from an eye injury and playing his second-fewest minutes of the season.
March 8, 2009
Rudy Gay is questionable for Sunday's game at Houston due to an eye ailment, according to the Sports Network.

Our View:Gay chipped in 18 points and nine boards in his last meeting with the Rockets, but could be hindered by his eye if cleared to play, making him a risky fantasy option.
March 5, 2009
For the first time this season, Rudy Gay cracked 30 points. He finished Wednesday night's 118-95 win over the Clippers. He also had eight rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two three-pointers in the win.

Our View:Oddly, Gay has played in O.J. Mayo's shadow for most of the season. Most fantasy players had him pegged for significant improvement in his third season, but he seems to have taken a step back.
February 28, 2009
Rudy Gay scored 20 points on Saturday while also contributing seven rebounds, one steal, one block, and one assist in Memphis' 99-92 loss to the Thunder.

Our View:Gay now has 20+ points in three of his last five games.
February 24, 2009
Rudy Gay scored 13 points and added four boards in the Grizzlies' 94-79 loss to Cleveland on Tuesday.

Our View:Gay has been a fairly solid fantasy play of late for Memphis. His 13 points on Tuesday was his lowest total in the last four games.
February 18, 2009
Rudy Gay scored at team-high 20 points on Wednesday to go with five rebounds, two steals, one assist, and one block.

Our View:This was a decent effort for Gay in just his second game back from a hip injury. He looks safe for fantasy lineups again.
February 9, 2009
The AP reports that Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said after Monday's win over the Rockets that Rudy Gay will not play again until after the all-star break due to a hip injury and he will not participate in the dunk contest.

Our View:Gay continues to have elite fantasy potential as he can get it done in all categories, but obviously you need to keep him out of your lineups until further notice. As for the dunk contest, we expect Ryan Anderson to replace him. Yes folks, that would make half of the participants white guys.
February 9, 2009
Due to a hip injury, Rudy Gay may opt out of the dunk contest this weekend, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

Our View:This would be the smart thing to do. It would be interesting to see who replaces him, but Ryan Anderson would be our guess.
February 9, 2009
Rudy Gay is not likely to play in Monday's game against the Hornets due to a sore hip, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

Our View:This will be the second straight game he's missed, and it's possible that he does not return until after this weekend's all-star break. He still has strong fantasy value despite a slight slide in numbers. Expect a strong finish to the season.
February 9, 2009
Rudy Gay is considered day-to-day while recovering from a strained hip flexor, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

Our View:He missed Saturday's game and is uncertain for tonight's home outing against New Orleans. Gay would be missed by the Grizzlies and fantasy owners as he averages 18.8 points, 5.7 boards and 1.4 steals per contest.
February 7, 2009
Rudy Gay will miss Saturday's game due to a hip flexor injury, according to the Toronto Star. He sustained the injury in Friday's loss to the Clippers while scoring 26 points.

Our View:Gay has played well of late since Lionel Hollins took over the coaching reigns. No word yet how serious the injury is.
February 7, 2009
Rudy Gay poured in a team-high 26 points on Friday's loss to the Clippers. He also chipped in five rebounds and one steal.

Our View:Gay has scored 20+ points for Memphis in four of their last five games, but he hasn't produced a double-double since December 27th.
February 4, 2009
Rudy Gay fell just one rebound short of a double-double on Wednesday to go with 18 points and one block.

Our View:This was the first time in four games that Gay was held to under 20 points.
February 2, 2009
Rudy Gay scored 23 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and three steals as the Grizzlies defeated the Wizards 113-97 on Monday.

Our View:Gay's three straight games with 20-plus points marks his longest such stretch of the season. We believe this will become a trend in the second half of the season.
January 31, 2009
Rudy Gay scored 23 points and collected six rebounds as the Grizzlies lost to the Lakers 115-98 on Sunday.

Our View:After a mostly lackadaisical month, Gay has totaled 48 points on back-to-back nights. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come. We suspect a much better second half from him.
January 28, 2009
In 46 minutes of action on Wednesday, Rudy Gay scored 25 points, collected eight rebounds, and hit three three-pointers as his team lost in overtime to the Thunder 114-102.

Our View:It was good to see the 25 points, but Gay's overall scoring in January has dipped down to just 16.2 points per game.
January 24, 2009
Rudy Gay had a terrible shooting night on Saturday, knocking down just 4-of-17 shots from the field. He finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.

Our View:Gay had a really tough set of back-to-back games, only making 11-of-34 field goals between Friday and Saturday after going 10-of-15 on Wednesday against the Bobcats.
January 24, 2009
The Memphis Grizzlies will announce Lionel Hollins as their new head coach on Sunday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Memphis fired coach Marc Iavaroni on Thursday, hiring Hollins after the club had their offer to former Mavericks coach Avery Johnson declined. It would take a miracle to turn around this season, with the Grizzlies posting an 11-31 record so far this year, so this move was made mostly looking towards next year. Memphis is currently 13.5 games out of the playoffs.
January 24, 2009
Rudy Gay scored a team-high 20 points and pulled down nine boards in Memphis' 108-88 loss to New York Friday night, the team's eighth consecutive loss.

Our View:It may be no coincidence that Gay is suffering through some of his poorest shooting games of the season during the Grizzlies' eight-game slide. In the last seven games, Gay has failed to shoot better than 30 percent from the field on three separate occasions.
January 23, 2009
Avery Johnson turned down a five-year contract to become the new head coach of the Grizzlies, sources inform ESPN.com. "I've said all along [that] at the right time and in the right situation, I will coach again," Johnson says. "I am enjoying my time at ESPN and with my family. I think an awful lot of [Grizzlies owner] Michael Heisley and [general manager] Chris Wallace. I wish the Grizzlies the very best." Assistant coach Johnny Davis has taken over as the interim head coach. Marc Iavaroni was fired on Thursday. According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal, Bucks assistant Lionel Hollins is expected to take over the head coaching job.

Our View:Hmm, we wonder how ESPN managed to find some sources for this information. Did Marc Stein turn to his left and talk to Johnson?
January 21, 2009
Rudy Gay scored a game-high 26 points in Wednesday's 101-86 loss to the Bobcats. He also chipped in four rebounds, two blocks, one assist, and one steal.

Our View:This was the first time in four games that Gay scored 20+ points for the Grizzlies and it was just the third time in nine games that he's accomplished this in January.
January 19, 2009
Rudy Gay scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Grizzlies fell 87-79 to the Pistons on Monday.

Our View:Gay looked dominant in the first half, but took a backseat to his teammates in the second half. He is blessed with tremendous skills and athletic ability, but he typically shows it for only 20-25 minutes per game. He always has the potential to become a fantasy force, but he has regressed this season with Mayo in the lineup.
January 9, 2009
Rudy Gay scored 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting as Memphis fell in Toronto 82-103 on Friday.

Our View:It was an off night for O.J. Mayo but Gay was not able to get more than 15 shots off. He is averaging 19 points per game.
January 4, 2009
Rudy Gay had 19 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals as the Grizzlies defeated the Mavericks 102-82 on Sunday.

Our View:Gay has become more of an all-around producer as O.J. Mayo has become the focus of his team's offense.
