The deal is estimated to be worth close to $700 million. Our View:It sounds like this deal is closer than originally thought, because Prokhorov has now confirmed that his interest is real. He would have to fund most of a new stadium, but his net worth is reportedly $9.5 billion, so he has the cash. |

September 18, 2009 SI.com is reporting that Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov is considering a deal with the New Jersey Nets to help fund a new stadium in exchange for a large stake of the club in return. Nets' owner Bruce Ratner has until the December deadline for his plan to build a stadium in Brooklyn to move the team in 2011 or they will lose much of the funding. Our View:Prokhorov is the richest man in all of Russia, and it looks like this could be a good match. He is part-owner of a Russian basketball, and it looks like he wants to get involved in the NBA. The Nets would welcome this move. |
