Newsbreakers

September 25, 2009

Bud Norris has been shut down for the remainder of the season due to arm fatigue, according to beat writer Brian McTaggart's twitter page.

Our View:

Norris ends the year with a 4.53 ERA and 1.51 WHIP over 55.2 innings (10 starts), and should compete for a spot in the Astros' rotation in 2010.

September 23, 2009

Bud Norris prevented the Cardinals from clinching the NL Central on Wednesday night, pitching six scoreless innings in a 3-0 Astros win at home.

Our View:

The win was Norris' second of the year against the Cardinals. He has just four against the rest of baseball.

September 18, 2009

Bud Norris only allowed one earned run on three hits over five innings in Friday's 3-2 loss at Milwaukee. He had three walks and racked up eight strikeouts.

Our View:

Norris pitched very well tonight, but was forced to settle for a no-decision due to poor run support. The rookie is hot, as he allowed two or less earned runs in each of his three starts in September.

September 14, 2009

Bud Norris has had his next start pushed back to Friday due to a concern about his workload this season, according to the Houston Chronicle. Norris has thrown 164.2 innings this season between the majors and the minors.

Our View:

The team hasn't announced a starter for Wednesday's game just yet, but with September call-ups it shouldn't be difficult to find someone to step in. Norris has been very good is his rookie season, and the last thing the team wants to do is jeopardize his future by overusing him when the team is out of the playoff hunt.

September 11, 2009

Bud Norris only surrendered one earned run on six hits over six innings in Friday's 9-1 win over the Pirates at Minute Maid Park. He had one walk and racked up seven strikeouts.

Our View:

The rookie earned his fifth win and is pitching well, as he allowed two or less earned runs in each of his two starts this month.

September 6, 2009

Bud Norris pitched six innings of two-run ball on Sunday to earn his first win since August 12, as the Astros beat the Phillies 4-3 at home.

Our View:

The quality start was his first since August 7. With a 6.05 ERA, he's not worth the risk down the stretch in NL-only leagues.

August 29, 2009

Bud Norris got hit hard again on Saturday, allowing six runs in five innings, as Houston got routed 9-0 in Arizona.

Our View:

Norris' ERA is now an ugly 6.61, and the Astros won't likely keep running him out there much longer.

August 23, 2009

Bud Norris was lit up for six earned runs on six hits over a mere one inning of work in Sunday's 7-5 loss to the Diamondbacks at Minute Maid Park. He had three walks and one strikeout.

Our View:

Norris gave up 15 earned runs over his last three starts, and is only an option for deeper fantasy leagues right now.

August 18, 2009

Bud Norris got slapped around by the Marlins on Tuesday, allowing five runs on nine hits and a walk over 5.2 innings. He was saddled with his first loss of the season as the 'Stros fell 6-2.

Our View:

Norris started out with a bang this season, but has now been roughed up in back to back starts. It seems hitters have seen enough tape to adjust to his stuff and the last two starts may be Norris' true colors.

August 12, 2009

Bud Norris wasn't sharp as he improved to 3-0 on Wednesday night, but he didn't need to be, as Houston scored 14 runs en route to winning 14-6 in Miami.

Our View:

Norris allowed five hits and ten runs in five innings, and has seen his runs allowed go up from zero to two to five in his three starts this season. He's not a great spot-starting option.

August 7, 2009

Bud Norris won his second straight start on Friday night, corralling the Brewers at home by limiting them to two runs in six innings as Houston won 6-3.

Our View:

Norris has pitched well enough to warrant a look in all formats if you need some new blood at starting pitcher.

August 2, 2009

Filling in for injured ace Roy Oswalt, Bud Norris looked much like an ace himself. He took a no hitter into the sixth inning and shutout a potent Cardinal offense for seven innings. He eventually allowed just two hits, walked four and struck out five in the Astros 2-0 win.

Our View:

Norris earned his first Major League victory Sunday, and the 24-year old looked sharp. The pitching starved Astros may keep him in the rotation even when Oswalt returns if he continues to pitch like this. If that happens he'll have some value in NL-only leagues.

July 31, 2009

The Houston Chronicle reports that if Roy Oswalt is unable to make his scheduled start against St. Louis on Sunday, Bud Norris will steep in and take the hill.

Our View:

It seems more likely than not that Oswalt's back won't be game shape in time and Norris is a good bet to start. He'll have a tough task in front of him though, facing a revamped Cardinals' lineup and opposing Adam Wainwright on the hill.

July 29, 2009

According to the Miami Herald, the Astros have purchased the contract of right-hander Bud Norris from Triple-A Round Rock.

Our View:

No word yet on a corresponding move, but one has to wonder if this means that ace Roy Oswalt is heading to the DL. Norris was 4-9 with a 2.63 ERA in Triple-A this season.
