The Oakland A's are "in the thick of" the bidding for phenom lefty Aroldis Chapman, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
This means that perhaps baseball's two most notorious penny-pinching organizations, Oakland and Florida, are both legitimately in on the biggest international free agent since Daisuke Matsuzaka. It still seems hard to believe, but given both clubs' propensity to surprise, it's likely true.
The Florida Marlins remain "firmly" in the Aroldis Chapman sweepstakes, according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro.
While it's hard to believe the Marlins have the money to sign Chapman, or that even if they did he would prefer to pitch there over New York or Boston, these reports continue to persist. Were they able to land him, it would be a huge coup for the small-market Marlins.
The Marlins have offered left-hander Aroldis Chapman a five year, $13 million contract, according to the Miami Herald. They are hoping the Cuban defector will pitch on a discount to live in Miami.
The Red Sox have already offered Chapman $15.5 million and a bidding war is expected to break out at some point. There are nearly a dozen teams interested in the free agent pitcher.
Baseball Prospectus reports that the Red Sox have offered Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman a $15.5 million contract.
A far cry from the $50 million he was once believed to be seeking. When it's all said and done, expect him to end up with roughly $20 million from the Yankees or Red Sox.
Aroldis Chapman's workout has been set for Tuesday of next week in Houston, according to Jorge Arangure of ESPN.
Among the teams expected to be in attendance are New York, Boston and the Angels, while many others will likely show up. This will be a pivotal day in his major league courtship, and may not only determine how much money teams are willing to pay him, but how they might use him.
The Red Sox, Angels and Yankees will be among the teams in attendance for Aroldis Chapman's workout next week in Houston, according to MLB.com. The Orioles and Tigers are also known to be interested in him.
The Cuban lefty will throw a side session. The MLB clubs in attendance will namely be trying to determine how close the 21-year-old hurler is to being ready for the bigs. It will be interesting to see what kind of deal he will command as well.
Cuban free agent pitcher Aroldis Chapman has fired his agent, according to ESPN.
He has fired Edwin Mejia and replaced him with the more high profile Hendricks brothers. There have been whispers that Chapman isn't worth the kind of big time money he is reported to be seeking, and this move is almost surely in response to them. Whoever is representing him, he will almost certainly find a very lucrative payday.
AOL Fanhouse reports that the Aroldis Chapman sweepstakes are looking like a "two-team race" between the Yankees and Red Sox.
Color everyone shocked. The pursuit of most big name free agents and trading block prizes will continue to mostly be a two-team race until something is done about the spending disparities between baseball's biggest market and revenue teams and everyone else. Among the players linked to either the Yankees or Red Sox this offseason have been (either immediately or down the road), Roy Halladay, Adrian Gonzalez, Felix Hernandez and Joe Mauer. Scary thoughts for the rest of baseball.
Young Cuban hurler Aroldis Chapman was reportedly very impressed with his visit with the Red Sox on Wednesday, according to the Boston Globe. Chapman's agent acknowledged that while Chapman enjoyed himself, he still has at least 10 teams interested in meeting.
The Sox may have the inside track on Chapman for two very important reasons. First, they have the money. Second, they signed his former teammate, shortstop Jose Iglesias, to an $8.5 MM deal this summer. Look for the Red Sox to be one of the final contenders for Chapman's services.
Aroldis Chapman is slated to audition for the Red Sox at Fenway Park on Wednesday, according to Kiley McDaniel's (Baseball Prospectus) twitter page. He will throw a pen session, weather permitting.
The Red Sox are the latest club to garner interest in the Cuban hurler. The Mets also like Chapman, but he is believed to be out of their price range. He reportedly wants up to $60MM to sign.
The Detroit Tigers have throw their hats in the ring for the services of Cuban pitcher Aroldis Chapman, according to SI.com. The Tigers have contacted Chapman's people about setting up a meeting later this week or early next week.
Everyone wants a piece of Chapman, but it looks like there will only be a few teams with deep enough pockets to get him signed. The Tigers obviously feel like they can get it done, but they are still behind teams like the Yankees and Red Sox in the Chapman sweepstakes.
Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post reports that the Mets are not serious players in the Aroldis Chapman sweepstakes.
The Red Sox and Yankees are, of course, considered the favorites. The Mets were put off by his supposed demand for $60 million, and are believed to be in payroll slashing mode this offseason.
MetsBlog.com is reporting that the team met with free agent pitcher Aroldis Chapman on Friday. It was not clear if the two sides discussed financial demands, but the Mets are not expected to pursue the young Cuban.
Chapman is reportedly looking for a deal in the $40-$60 million range, so that pretty much eliminates everyone except for the Red Sox and Yankees. The Cubs, Cardinals, and White Sox will all meet with Chapman next week, but it seems unlikely any of those teams will be able to afford the flame-throwing lefty.
In addition to the Yankees and Red Sox, the Cubs, White Sox and Cardinals are all said to be interested in Cuban pitching prospect Aroldis Chapman, according to MLBTradeRumors.com.
The Cardinals are said to be the most aggressive of the three new bidders. That being said, it's hard to still not envision the Yanks and Red Sox being the favorites to land his services.
ESPN.com reports that coveted Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman is slated to arrive in New York on Wednesday to begin a series of meetings with multiple MLB general managers.
Chapman, widely considered to be one the greatest left-handed pitching prospects in a long time, would not confirm a specific itinerary, but it is expected that he will visit with Yankees and Red Sox executives. There will undoubtedly be many more suitors than that though, as any team with a cushy payroll is likely to get involved to some degree. Expect the Dodgers, Angels, Mets and possibly even the Giants to reach out to the 21-year-old southpaw. There could be a vicious bidding war this winter.
Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman has been deemed an international free agent by the MLB, according to the New York Post.
The MLB's decision finalizes what we know will be coming this offseason: a big-time bidding war for the 21-year-old flamethrower that is sure to include the Yankees, Red Sox, possibly both Chicago teams and any other big market organizations willing to throw tons of money at an unproven but very talented prospect. It's already being speculated that Chapman's contract could rival that of the other big-name free agents this offseason, such as John Lackey and Matt Holliday.
According to the New York Post, Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman has attracted interest from the Mets, Red Sox and Yankees.
A huge bidding war is expected for the man who has been dubbed "the best left-handed pitching prospect ever." He is thought to bring in more than Dice-K, and the market has been ball parked at $40-$60 million. He has been clocked at 102 mph and has a "plus" curve and "plus" slider. What's not to love? Monitor his progress closely as he'll likely have instant fantasy impact once he signs.
According to a report at the Boston Globe, Cuban pitching sensation Aroldis Chapman has hired an agent and will attempt to sign with a team in MLB. Chapman is said to be the top pitching prospect outside of America. He signed with Athletes Premiere International.
Chapman is a 6-4 left-hander with a fastball that has been clocked as high as 102 MPH on the gun. He defected from the Cuban National Team while they were playing a tournament in the Netherlands, and now he will attempt to play in the majors. He is the real deal, and he will make some real money when he signs. Keep your eyes and ears open, because he will be a high priority fantasy option when he debuts in the league.
