November 23, 2009

Despite a dislocation in his left knee joint, number one overall 2009 draft pick Stephen Strasburg is expected to be ready for spring training, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

He does not need surgery, and has been prescribed rest. While it's a relief that he will be fine, it's a little bit troubling that he is already hurt so soon into his MLB career.

November 20, 2009

Updating a previous report, number-one overall pick Stephen Strasburg will not need surgery on his injured left knee, according to MLBlogs.com. Strasburg injured his knee shagging fly balls on Thursday.

Our View:

This injury wasn't believed to be serious, but you never know when it has to do with the knee. Strasburg will need to rest the knee and get therapy, but there is no reason to think he won't be ready for spring training.

November 19, 2009

Washington Nationals' pitcher Stephen Strasburg reportedly twisted his left knee while shagging fly balls on Thursday, according to the Twitter page of beat writer Bill Ladson. The injury is not expected to be serious.

Our View:

Strasburg said he heard his knee "pop" when he twisted it, and the entire Nats' organization feared the worst. It looks like he should be fine, so Nats' fans can breathe easy.

November 14, 2009

Stephen Strasburg only allowed one hit over 3.2 scoreless innings in today's 1-0 win over Peoria in the Arizona Fall League. He had six strikeouts and two walks.

Our View:

The prized prospect earned his AFL-leading fourth win, and was fine following his bout with neck pain. Strasburg has a very bright future in the bigs.

November 11, 2009

Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated reports that the Nationals plan to name interim 2009 manager Jim Riggleman to the full-time position.

Our View:

The team sure went to a lot of trouble interviewing other candidates when it apparently planned on keeping Riggleman all along. His track record isn't great, and neither are the Nats, so expect him to face a lot of scrutiny in 2010.

November 8, 2009

Nationals' top pick Stephen Strasburg was held out of the Rising Stars game in the Arizona Fall league on Saturday due to neck soreness. The injury is not expected to be serious.

Our View:

There was no reason to risk it with Strasburg, as the team has major expectations for their top pick. He is expected to be fine, but it might be worth monitoring his status heading into spring training.

November 2, 2009

Stephen Strasburg put together another impressive start in the Arizona Fall League on Monday, according to the Washington Times. Strasburg allowed one run on four hits in five innings while striking out six.

Our View:

Strasburg reportedly threw over 100 mph on four of his first six pitches, including two 101 mph pitches. Other than his one bad start earlier in the season, he has been every bit as good as advertised.

October 17, 2009

Stephen Strasburg pitched 3.1 scoreless innings in his Arizona Fall League debut on Friday night, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

He hit 99 miles per hour on his first pitch before allowing two hits and striking out two. So far, so good for the Nats' $15 million rookie.

October 14, 2009

According to the Twitter page of the Arizona Fall League, number-one overall pick Stephen Strasburg is scheduled to make his AFL debut on Friday night.

Our View:

The AFL doesn't provide nearly the competition that MLB will, but the Nats should be able to start gauging what Strasburg can do at the pro level as the fall season goes on. The team doesn't want to rush Strasburg, but if he lives up to the hype we could very well see him in a Nats uniform next season.

August 26, 2009

The Baltimore Sun is reporting that top pick Stephen Strasburg is scheduled to fly to the Nationals' training facility in Florida to begin work in the Instructional League. The goal is to have him fully ready to pitch in the Arizona Fall League.

Our View:

The Nats want to make sure Strasburg is 100 percent ready to go when the AFL opens. With a strong showing this fall and next year at spring training, Strasburg could make a play to be in the Nats' rotation next season. It seems likely that the team will take it slow with him at the start of next season, but with the money he is getting the Nats will want to see some return on their investment as soon as possible.

August 25, 2009

Stephen Strasburg will make his "unofficial" professional debut in the Arizona Fall League, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

He will suit up for the Arizona Desert Dogs when the season begins on October 13th.

August 18, 2009

USA Today baseball writer Bob Nightengale is reporting on his Twitter page that Stephen Strasburg will not pitch in the majors this season. Strasburg is not expected to pitch again until the Arizona Fall League at the earliest.

Our View:

The Nats want to get Strasburg on the mound ASAP, but they also don't want to do anything that could jeopardize his development. Expect him to be in the rotation at some point next season, but anyone hoping to make him a late season fantasy addition this year is out of luck.

August 18, 2009

Stephen Strasburg has inked a deal with the Nationals prior to the deadline, according to the Associated Press. It is a four-year contract worth slightly over $15.1MM.

Our View:

There was wide speculation that a deal was not going to happen, but that did not prove to be the case for the No. 1 pick in the draft. His ascension in the minors could be short, as the Nats want him in their rotation ASAP.

August 17, 2009

TSN reports that an unnamed source says the "Nats have a better shot of making playoffs, than signing Strasburg."

Our View:

Of course, there are all sorts of "sources" saying lots of anonymous things about the Nats/Strasburg negotiations, but this still isn't a good sign for people who want Stephen Strasburg in the major leagues as soon as possible.

August 17, 2009

The Nationals have proposed a $17 million deal to no. 1 overall pick Stephen Strasburg that includes "easily attainable" incentives that could push it over $20 million, according to MASN.

Our View:

Strasburg and agent Scott Boras have famously already asked for $50 million, so it's hard to see $17 million being enough. Unlike some of the other current sagas in sports, we know when this one will be over at least, midnight eastern time tonight. Stay tuned.

August 16, 2009

The Washington Post is reporting that a source close to the negotiations has said that the Nationals are going to have to increase their offer to number one pick Stephen Strasburg if they want him to sign. The team has reportedly offered a deal that was more than the record $10.5 million given to Mark Prior.

Our View:

Nothing too shocking about this. Everyone knew Scott Boras would turn down this deal and try to squeeze the Nats out of more money. Expect Strasburg to sign before the deadline, because he has very little leverage.

August 15, 2009

The Nationals have made an undisclosed formal offer to number one overall draft pick Stephen Strasburg, according to The Washington Post.

Our View:

Little is known about the offer other than that it is worth more than Mark Prior's record $10.5 million contract from 2001, and that it more than doubles last year's top bonus of $6 million. Still, expect Scott Boras to be "insulted" and for this to come down to the 11th hour on Monday night.

August 14, 2009

According to the Washington Post, number one overall pick Stephen Strasburg was visited by a group of Nationals executives in California last week.

Our View:

The two sides are still not close on a deal, but at least the Nats are in contact with Strasburg now. It seemed for a while as if they were just going to sit on their hands and do nothing. Expect talks to heat up quickly though, as the deadline to sign draft picks is this coming Monday.

July 21, 2009

The Nationals are currently "not on pace" to sign last month's first overall draft pick Stephen Strasburg, according to ESPN.

Our View:

The Nationals have not yet made an offer outside of the mandatory minor league tender all clubs must give to their choices within ten days of the draft. Not signing Strasburg would be a disastrous PR move for the horrific Nats, so it's hard to see it happening, but they have proven so inept at every facet of running a Major League Baseball team that it is certainly a possibility.

July 15, 2009

Stephen Strasburg says the Nationals have not contacted him since drafting him first overall in last month's amateur player draft, according to The Washington Post.

Our View:

They have apparently been in frequent contact with his agent Scott Boras, however. The Nats have until August 17 to sign their phenom wonder child, and likely won't do so even one day earlier. Stay tuned.

July 14, 2009

Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com is reporting on his Twitter page that former San Diego State pitcher Stephen Strasburg has been named the winner of the Golden Spikes Award as the nation's top amateur player. Strasburg was the number one overall pick by the Washington Nationals in this year's entry draft.

Our View:

No big surprise here, as Strasburg was clearly the most dominating player in college baseball this season. The Nats are still working on getting him signed, and assuming they do he should be on everyone's list for next year's fantasy season.

June 9, 2009

As expected, the Nationals selected right-handed pitcher Stephen Strasburg with the No. 1 pick in Tuesday's draft.

Our View:

Let the contract negotiations begin. Scott Boras will reportedly ask for $50 million dollars from the Nats. The "best prospect ever" will likely sign eventually, but it's not a given
