Newsbreakers

September 5, 2009

Luke French was rocked for five earned runs on seven hits over a mere 3.2 innings of work in Saturday's 9-5 loss at Oakland. He had three walks with no strikeouts.

Our View:

French had a tough night from the bump, and now has a losing record at 4-5. He allowed 12 earned runs over his last two starts.

August 31, 2009

Luke French was lit up for seven earned runs on 10 hits over five innings in Monday's 10-0 loss to the Angels at Safeco Field. He had no walks and three strikeouts, and gave up two homers.

Our View:

French falls to 4-4 following his disastrous outing. He had his two-game winning streak snapped, and allowed three or more earned runs in five of six starts this month.

August 26, 2009

Luke French gave up three earned runs on six hits over 5.2 innings in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the A's at Safeco Field. He had one walk and four strikeouts, and allowed two homers.

Our View:

It was not a strong performance for French, but the Mariners provided enough run support for him to improve his record to 4-3. He claimed a win in each of his last two starts, and allowed three earned runs in both.

August 21, 2009

New acquisition Luke French allowed three runs on eight hits and three walks over six innings as he defeated the Indians 9-4 on Friday. He fanned six and earned his third win of the season.

Our View:

French is now 2-1 with the M's since coming over from the Tigers at the trade deadline. He has also recorded back to back quality starts.

August 11, 2009

Luke French gave up four earned runs on three hits over 5.1 innings in tonight's 6-4 win over the White Sox at Safeco Field. He issued six walks with five strikeouts.

Our View:

French had a poor outing, and should be happy the Mariners provided enough offensive support for him to take a no-decision. He allowed four or more earned runs in each of his last three starts, and is only an option for deeper fantasy leagues right now.

August 5, 2009

Luke French gave up four earned runs on nine hits over five innings in Wednesday's 11-6 win at Kansas City. He had one walk and two strikeouts, and allowed two homers.

Our View:

French did not pitch well, but the Mariners provided plenty of offensive firepower for him to even his record to 2-2. The rookie was 0-2 over his final two starts with Detroit prior to be being traded.

August 1, 2009

Luke French will make his first start with the Mariners Wednesday at Kansas City, according to the Associated Press. He was acquired via trade from Detroit.

Our View:

French will replace Garrett Olson in Seattle's rotation, and is worth a look for deeper fantasy leagues. He held a 3.38 ERA and 1.50 WHIP over 29.1 innings (five starts) with the Tigers.

July 31, 2009

According to Ed Price at AOL Fanhouse, the Tigers have traded Luke French and Single-A lefty Mauricio Robles to the Mariners for Jarrod Washburn.

Our View:

French is having a solid (albeit brief) season, but is a number five starter and Robles is not an elite prospect, so it appears the Tigers got the better of the deal here. French will have a chance to make an impact in Seattle and has some upside, but is not a fantasy worthy player outside of deep AL-only leagues at this point in his career.

July 28, 2009

Luke French had his first really bad start of the season on Tuesday as the Tigers fell 7-3 to the Rangers. French went five innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits while walking two and striking out two.

Our View:

French saw his ERA balloon up to 3.38 after this start, but overall he has been very good this season. He has allowed two runs or less in all starts before tonight, and he still remains an AL-only option, although owners will want to monitor his performance each time out.

July 23, 2009

Luke French allowed two earned runs on eight hits over 5.1 innings in Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Mariners at Comerica Park. He issued no walks and fired six strikeouts.

Our View:

French had a pretty good outing, but was dealt a loss due to poor run support from his teammates. The rookie only has one win over four starts, despite giving up two or less earned runs in each outing over the span.

July 18, 2009

Luke French was pretty good on Friday, but he did not factor into the decision as the Tigers fell to the Yankees by a score of 5-3. French went five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits while walking three and striking out three.

Our View:

French has been good in his two starts with the team, so we will have to see if the team keeps him in the rotation. If he stays he could be a nice pickup, but no word yet on the plans for him in the future.

July 8, 2009

Luke French earned his first Major League victory on Wednesday night. He held the Royals to just one run on six hits and a walk over 6.1 innings. He struck out two in the 3-1 win.

Our View:

French has allowed just three runs in 11 innings as a starter this season, and could be a candidate in mixed leagues if he remains in the rotation. The 23-year-old lefty has loads of potential.

June 28, 2009

According to the Detroit Free Press, the Tigers have recalled lefty Luke French from Triple-A Toledo. He will take the roster spot of Alfredo Figaro, who was optioned by the team in the corresponding move.

Our View:

French is expected to pitch out of the bullpen early in the week before making the start for the team on Friday against the Twins. He has a 2.98 ERA in Triple-A, but he should not be considered for fantasy duty at this point.

May 21, 2009

Luke French has been optioned to Triple-A Toledo by the Tigers, according to TSN. He was demoted to allow the club to activate Nate Robertson from the 15-day DL.

Our View:

French fired three scoreless innings during his brief stint with the Tigers. He did a good job while replacing Robertson in the bullpen, and could be recalled again, depending on injuries.
