Newsbreakers

July 27, 2009

Two days after being sent down to Triple-A Memphis, P.J. Walters stuck out 14 batters in six innings on Saturday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

There hasn't been any indication that Walters' Snellian performance will hasten his return to the major leagues, but with Todd Wellemeyer's continued ineptitude, it couldn't have hurt. If he follows up his Saturday brilliance with another masterwork, don't expect him to be in Memphis much longer.

July 23, 2009

P.J. Walters has been optioned to Triple-A Memphis by the Cardinals, according to TSN.

Our View:

Walters was sent down with a poor 9.56 ERA over 16 innings (one start) this season. He holds no fantasy value for now while working on his skills in the minors.

July 11, 2009

P.J. Walters has been called back up to the Cardinals, according to Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

Walters gives the Cardinals an extra arm today and tomorrow with the Cardinals are playing the Cubs three times in 28 hours. Dennys Reyes has left the team to be with an ailing family member, but was not eligible for the bereavement list, so Walters will serve as an emergency arm out of the bullpen. Brian Barden was sent down to clear a roster spot.

June 18, 2009

P.J. Walters has been sent back down to Triple-A Memphis, according to John Marecek of KTRS.

Our View:

Walters was used only once during his most recent callup, giving up one earned run in two innings of work against the Tigers on June 16. He could be back in St. Louis this season, but is not a viable fantasy option.

June 12, 2009

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold,P.J. Walters has been recalled from Triple-A Memphis and is with the team in Cleveland this weekend. He is taking the roster spot of infielder Brian Barden.

Our View:

Walters had a 9.58 ERA in a 10-inning cup of coffee with the club earlier this season. It is likely that he'll be pitching out of the bullpen. He shouldn't be on your fantasy radar at the moment.
