Andrew Bailey has been named the American League's Rookie of the Year for 2009, according to Noah Coslov of MLB.com. He posted 26 saves and a 1.84 ERA in 83.1 innings pitched.
Bailey won amongst a relatively weak crop that nonetheless included other worthy potential recipients in Detroit's Rick Porcello, Chicago's Gordon Beckham and Texas' Elvis Andrus. He is the first reliever to win the award since Huston Street did so for Oakland in 2005.
Andrew Bailey pitched a perfect ninth inning in his final appearance of the season on Sunday. He struck out one in a 5-3 loss to the Angels.

Bailey has been used extensively over the past week. Tonight was his fourth appearance in the last five days. He has been the A's best reliever all season, and he should still remain Oakland's closer.

Bailey is just 4-for-7 in save opportunities this season, but the A's seem convinced he's their guys. At least for now. If he struggles Brad Ziegler may get another shot.
Andrew Bailey picked up his third save of the season as did not allow a base runner in 1.2 innings of work in the A's 5-3 win over the White Sox on Wednesday.
Bailey has blown two of his last four save opportunities, but it appears the A's are sticking with him. 13 of his 24 appearances have lasted more than one inning.
Andrew Bailey continued his remarkable start to the season with another scoreless outing. Bailey worked one inning while picking up two Ks against the Rangers.
Bailey may not be in line for saves in the A's pen, but you would be hard pressed to find a more effective middle infield option in baseball than Bailey who has three wins, a 1.45 ERA and a K/9 mark of 10.61.
Reliever Andrew Bailey worked two hitless innings for the A's on Friday night and improved to 2-0 on the season. Through 8.1 innings this season, the rookie right-hander has allowed only one hit and struck out 11 batters.
Bailey used an impressive spring to surprisingly win a bullpen job, and he has been nothing short of excellent thus far. Fantasy owners who use middle relievers might want to give him a look.
