Newsbreakers

September 30, 2009

David Hernandez got hit hard on Wednesday, allowing five earned runs in just 4.1 innings, as Baltimore lost 5-3 in Tampa Bay.

Our View:

Hernandez fell to 4-10 on the season, with a woeful 5.42 ERA. At only age 24, however, he figures to get another shot in the Orioles rotation in 2010.

September 25, 2009

David Hernandez gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits over six innings in Friday's 4-2 loss at Cleveland. He had one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View:

Hernandez had a decent outing, but fell to 4-9 due to poor run support. He is winless over his last eight starts, but lowered his ERA to 5.20.

September 19, 2009

David Hernandez managed a quality start on Saturday against the Red Sox. He allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks over six innings and avoided the loss in an 11-5 blowout.

Our View:

Hernandez sandwiched three horrible outings with quality starts after Saturday's game went in the books. One of the reasons the middle three were so bad: nine homers allowed. That will do it every time.

September 14, 2009

David Hernandez was lit up for five earned runs on nine hits over a mere three innings in Monday's 8-4 loss to the Rays at Camden Yards. He had no walks with five strikeouts, and was tagged for two homers.

Our View:

Hernandez fell to 4-8 with a 5.40 ERA following his poor outing. The rookie is winless over his last six starts.

September 8, 2009

David Hernandez got lit up at Fenway Park on Tuesday night, allowing six runs in just 2.2 innings, as Baltimore lost 10-0.

Our View:

Hernandez is now 4-7 with a 5.05 ERA on the season. He has allowed 21 home runs in his 16 2009 appearances (15 stats), and seven in his past two. He should be considered fantasy poison.

September 1, 2009

David Hernandez was tagged for five earned runs on four hits over five innings in Tuesday's 9-6 loss to the Yankees at Camden Yards. He issued six walks with seven strikeouts, and surrendered three homers.

Our View:

Baltimore took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, so Hernandez ends the night with a no-decision for his poor performance. The rookie is winless over his last four starts, and gave up five earned runs twice over the span.

August 27, 2009

David Hernandez allowed two earned runs on five hits over six innings in Thursday's 5-4 loss to the Indians at Camden Yards. He had three walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:

The game was tied at 2-2 when Hernandez exited, so he takes a no-decision rather than a loss. The rookie has not been too bad this month, as he allowed two earned runs in three of six starts.

August 22, 2009

David Hernandez pitched poorly again on Saturday as the Orioles fell to the White Sox 4-1. Hernandez went four innings and allowed three runs on three hits while walking three and striking out four.

Our View:

Hernandez has struggled badly as of late, and his ERA is all of the way up to 4.35 after this start. He pitched well for awhile, but as bad as he has been in August he should only be owned in AL-only leagues, if at all.

August 17, 2009

David Hernandez was rocked for five earned runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings in Monday's 8-5 loss to the Angels at Camden Yards. He had four walks with one strikeout, and was tagged for three homers.

Our View:

Hernandez struggled tonight, and now has a losing record at 4-5. He is 1-3 with a 6.52 ERA over four starts this month, and will be an unstable fantasy option for his next turn in Baltimore's rotation.

August 11, 2009

David Hernandez only allowed two earned runs on six hits over 6.2 innings in Tuesday's 3-2 win over Oakland at Camden Yards. He had one walk and fired six strikeouts.

Our View:

Hernandez pitched well, and evened his record to 4-4. He has allowed two or less earned runs in five of his last six starts, and the rookie is worth employing in AL-only leagues for his next turn in Baltimore's rotation.

August 6, 2009

David Hernandez was hit with his fourth loss of the season on Thursday as the Orioles fell to the Tigers 7-3. Hernandez went three innings and allowed fve runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out one.

Our View:

Not a good performance for Hernandez today, and after putting together some nice starts as of late, he blew up today. His fantasy stock wasm't great alreay pitching for the O's, but starts like this can take him out of contention instantly.

August 1, 2009

David Hernandez allowed two earned runs on seven hits over a mere 4.1 innings in Saturday's 4-0 loss to the Red Sox at Camden Yards. He had four walks and four strikeouts, and gave up two homers.

Our View:

Hernandez was handed a loss, and now has an even record at 3-3. He has allowed two or less earned runs in each of his last four starts, but the rookie only collected one win over that span.

July 26, 2009

David Hernandez shut down a potent Red Sox' lineup on Sunday to pick up his third win of the season. Hernandez went seven innings and allowed one run on five hits while striking out two.

Our View:

Hernandez has an ERA of 3.20 on the year, and he has proven over his last five starts that he is more than capable of being a good pitcher at this level. If you weren't convinced before today, his line against the Red Sox should change your mind. If his K/9 ratio was a little better he would be a great pickup, but even though he is not a big strikeout guy he is still getting the job done.

July 20, 2009

David Hernandez was excellent in a no decision against the Yankees on Monday, giving up one run off three hits and three walks while striking out four in six innings of work.

Our View:

The 24-year-old has looked great in his four starts since re-joining Baltimore's starting rotation and looks to have figured out how to use his fine stuff to handle major league hitters. He should definitely be picked up in AL-only leagues by now and is worth keeping a close eye on in mixed formats.

July 20, 2009

As expected, the Baltimore Orioles have recalled pitcher David Hernandez to start Monday night against the Yankees, according to the Baltimore Sun. No corresponding roster move has been announced by the team at this point.

Our View:

With no need for a fifth starter until today, the team sent Hernandez down to Double-A to get work in during the break. Hernandez is 2-2 with the O's this season, and he might be worth a spot start in Al-only leagues when not pitching against the Yankees. It would probably be wise to stay away from him tonight, however.

July 10, 2009

David Hernandez has been optioned to Double-A Bowie by the Orioles, according to MASN Sports. Cesar Izturis has been activated from the DL as the adjoining move.

Our View:

Hernandez will likely return to the Orioles' rotation to start July 20 against the Yankees. The club did not want to move him into the bullpen, and prefer to keep him on a starter's schedule.

July 8, 2009

David Hernandez had a solid start on Wednesday night, allowing just two runs on five hits and two walks over six innings. The Orioles scored five runs in the ninth, so Hernandez did not earn a decision in the 5-3 win over the Mariners.

Our View:

Hernandez made just one mistake to Jose Lopez that left the building in the first inning. Otherwise he was dominant. He dropped his ERA below 4.00 for the season, and is a decent option if you need starts in deep or AL_only leagues.

June 28, 2009

David Hernandez was hit with the loss on Sunday as his Orioles fell to the Nationals by a score of 5-3. Hernandez went 5.2 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out three.

Our View:

Hernandez wasn't terrible today, but he didn't do enough to solidify his hold on a rotation spot. The fact that he dropped a game to the Nats doesn't look good on his resume, but he will get a few more chances to earn a spot while Uehara is out.

June 28, 2009

As previously expected, David Hernandez will be recalled from Triple-A and get the start in the series finale against the Nationals on Sunday, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:

Hernandez will get a handful of starts with Koji Uehara on the DL, and if he impresses he could stick in the rotation. He has the stuff to force Uehara to a bullpen role and the kid couldn't have asked for a better match-up than the Nationals. He's an intriguing AL-only option for Sunday's start.

June 27, 2009

The Orioles will call up David Hernandez from the minors to start in place of the injured Koji Uehara (elbow) against Washington on Saturday, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:

Hernandez has great stuff and does make for an intriguing play against a weak Washington offense, though it'd probably be best to wait it out with Hernandez given his shakiness over a three-game stretch that began a month ago. He should get at least another one or two turns after Sunday with Uehara likely to land on the DL.

June 11, 2009

David Hernandez has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk by the Orioles, according to the Baltimore Sun. Koji Uehara was activated from the 15-day DL as the adjoining move.

Our View:

Hernandez fared well as a spot-starter, but was viewed as expendable to make room for Uehara on the roster. Hernandez holds no fantasy value while working in the minors.

May 28, 2009

David Hernandez picked up a win in his 2009 debut on Wednesday as the Orioles downed the Tigers 5-1. Hernandez went 5.2 innings and allowed one run on five hits while walking four and striking out three.

Our View:

Hernandez was very impressive tonight, but his four walks are a little concerning. It is unclear at this point how long he will remain in the rotation, but this start surely helped his cause.

May 27, 2009

David Hernandez has been slated to start Thursday's game against the Tigers at Camden Yards, according to the Baltimore Sun. He replaces Koji Uehara, who landed on the DL with a strained left hamstring.

Our View:

Hernandez was 3-1 with a 2.91 ERA over eight starts with Triple-A Norfolk this season. He fired 60 strikeouts over 43.1 innings and is worth a look for deeper fantasy leagues while Uehara is out.
