Newsbreakers

December 16, 2009

Brett Wallace will begin the 2010 season in Triple-A, according to MLB.com's Jordan Bastian.

Our View:

The team envisions the hard-hitting corner infielder as a first baseman. Lyle Overbay could be on the way out. Stay tuned.

December 16, 2009

Brett Wallace has officially been sent from Oakland to Toronto as part of the four-team trade involving ace hurler Roy Halladay, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:

Wallace is a top prospect and played third base for Team USA. He is not great defensively, but can hit for average and power, and could develop into an MLB All-Star. He should compete for a roster spot with the Jays in spring training.

December 15, 2009

Brett Wallace is expected to be dealt to Toronto in exchange for Michael Taylor once the Blue Jays acquire Taylor's rights as part of the Roy Halladay deal, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.

Our View:

Wallace is a third base prospect who was dealt from St. Louis to Oakland as part of last season's Matt Holliday deal. Like Taylor, Wallace is 23 years old and an excellent hitting prospect, so this deal seemed to be more of a need for position by both clubs. Each of the two youngsters could contend for major league roster spots in spring training.

MLB.com is reporting that the Oakland A's are considering promoting prospects Brett Wallace and Chris Carter after the Triple-A season is done. The team's Triple-A affiliate is starting the Pacific Coast League Championship series on Tuesday.

Our View:

Wallace and Carter have both been on a tear over the last month or so, and it seems possible that both could see time with the A's when the championship is over. Both players look like can't miss prospects for the A's, and both should see time with the big club next season.

August 21, 2009

BaseballAmerica.com has ranked A's minor leaguer Brett Wallace the hottest prospect in the minor leagues over the past week. Wallace hit .419 with five homers, nine RBI, and nine runs scored last week.

Our View:

With all of the hype surrounding Matt Holliday in St. Louis, Wallace is quietly tearing up the PCL. Five homers and a .419 average over one week is outrageous, and Wallace is showing the people in the Oakland organization just how good of a hitter he is. If he stays hot he could get a September call-up, but even if he doesn't get a major league at-bat this season, he should be considered a favorite to start next season with the club.

July 24, 2009

ESPN.com is reporting that the St. Cardinals have traded Brett Wallace and two other prospects to the Oakland A's in exchange for Matt Holliday. Wallace was considered the Cardinals' top prospect before the trade, and he is expected to join the A's Triple-A team.

Our View:

Wallace may be much better off in the AL, as he does not project well as a defensive third baseman in the NL. His bat is major league ready, and he should get an opportunity with the A's either at the end of this season or to start 2010. He looks to be a big-time fantasy prospect for next season, assuming he plays the entire year with the big club.

June 22, 2009

Brett Wallace is batting .353 in his last ten games at Triple-A Memphis, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

The Cardinals have previously said that Wallace will not be an option at third base this season, and with Khalil Greene hitting three home runs in his first three games there, this sounds like it will hold true for at least the immediate future. Should Greene flounder and Wallace keep hitting, though, it is conceivable he could be promoted. The Cardinals have become very aggressive with advancing prospects and he could have an immediate impact should he join the big club. Again, at this time it is unlikely, but it is something to at least keep on your radar.

May 21, 2009

Cardinals' GM John Mozeliak reiterated that first-round pick Brett Wallace is not an option at third base, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

The Cardinals will determine next month if Troy Glaus will be able to return this season from January shoulder surgery. David Freese is out at least eight weeks while recovering from an ankle ailment, and the Cardinals have been employing a platoon at third base with Joe Thurston and Brian Barden.

May 18, 2009

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch believes the Cardinals won't push prospect Brett Wallace up to the majors too quickly. He made the move from Double-A to Triple-A this past weekend, and the paper notes that his next transition may be from third base to left field. However, that shift may depend on if and when fellow prospect David Freese (ankle) is healthy.

Our View:

Wallace remains at third base, for now. We were hoping that the Cardinals were fast-tracking Wallace to the majors, but this report puts some breaks on those promising thoughts.

May 17, 2009

Brett Wallace was 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in his first start at Triple-A Saturday. He was recently promoted to fill in at third for David Freese, who was placed on the DL.

Our View:

With Joe Thurston and Brian Barden struggling mightily lately after hot starts and Troy Glaus still a long ways away from a return, Wallace has a chance to be up in St. Louis soon if he hits well at Memphis.

April 10, 2009

Brett Wallace went 4-for-5 with two home runs and six RBI for Double-A Springfield on Thursday.

Our View:

Wallace still has plenty, and we mean plenty, to prove on the defensive side of the field at the hot corner, though, even at just 22 years of age, you won't get much argument that he'd already be the top offensive option at third for St. Louis for as long as Troy Glaus remains out. It doesn't appear likely that Wallace would get called up anytime in the immediate future, though if Glaus' injury continues to linger and Wallace can prove to be at least viable in the field, he could end up as a fine mid-season pickup, as there are few, if any, questions about his bat.

January 22, 2009

With Troy Glaus likely to miss at least the first few weeks of the season following shoulder surgery, 2008 first-round pick Brett Wallace could have a shot at starting for the Cards at third base on opening day.

Our View:

Wallace has only 49 at-bats above Single-A, but most scouts feel he could hit in the majors right now. That said, David Freese is more likely to fill in for Glaus.
