Newsbreakers

March 10, 2010

Pablo Sandoval cracked his first spring homer in grand fashion on Wednesday, as he cleared the bases when he took Carlos Zambrano deep in a 5-1 win over the Cubs.

Our View:

Sandoval is hitting just .278 this spring, but he has already driven in eight runners. He will once again be the centerpiece of the Giants' offense and is an elite option at either corner infield spot (especially third).

February 26, 2010

Pablo Sandoval learned that he has diminished vision in his left eye during an examination in November, and he's now wearing prescription goggles on the field, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Sandoval batted .330 with the Giants last season, so apparently his bad vision wasn't bothering him too much. That said, the fact he can see even more clearly certainly doesn't hurt. The slugger wore the goggles during the Venezuelan Winter League, where he hit .395 in 20 games.

December 30, 2009

Reportedly displeased with Buster Posey's progression this offseason, San Francisco is apparently considering using Pablo Sandoval behind-the-plate in 2010, according to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated.

Our View:

Wow. After the kind of offensive season Sandoval had last year, he didn't seem likely to ever be a catcher again. San Francisco does not seem anxious to put him there, and are said to be pursuing free agents. If no one is found on the open market, however, the Kung Fu Panda appears poised to go back to catching in 2010.

December 7, 2009

Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval will most likely bat cleanup in 2010, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

Our View:

Sandoval hit mostly out of the three-hole in 2009, but also was the Giants' cleanup man 24 times, hitting an impressive .416 when doing so. Now the team just needs to find some players that can get on base in front of him.

October 4, 2009

Pablo Sandoval went 2-for-4 and crushed his 25th homer of the season in the tenth inning to give the Giants a 4-3 win over the Padres on Sunday.

Our View:

Kung Fu Panda finished his impressive first full season with 25 homers, 90 RBI and a .330 batting mark that is good for second in the National League. Looks like the Giants finally have an offensive star to build a lineup around.
