GM Omar Minaya suggested that Jonathon Niese could be a part of the Mets' rotation for 2010, according to NY Sports Day.
If so, Niese would be joined by ace Johan Santana, John Maine, Mike Pelfrey and Oliver Perez. This could change if the club signs another starter though, such as Joel Pineiro. Niese has been recovering from a torn hamstring, but is expected to be ready for spring training.
As expected, the Mets placed injured starter Jonathon Niese on the 60-day disabled list Thursday, according to TSN.com.
Niese is out for the season after completely tearing his hamstring while covering first base in Wednesday's game against St. Louis. He will have surgery to repair the damage and should be fine to start 2010 Spring Training.
Jonathon Niese suffered a "complete hamstring tear" against the Cardinals on Wednesday, and is scheduled for surgery and will not be back in 2009, according to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post.
Yikes. That's three more Mets that have gone down with injury in the last two days, par for the course for the Amazins' disastrous 2009 season. Niese had gone at least six innings in both of his last two starts, and seemed to be developing into a bright spot for a team starved of them in 2009. The team's injuries are almost bordering on parody at this point, so Niese likely won't be the last Met to go down this year.
Jonathon Niese left Wednesday's start against the Cardinals in the second inning with a hamstring injury.
He was replaced on the mound by Nelson Figueroa after allowing no runs, one hit and one walk over 1.2 innings. Niese apparently injured the hammy by stretching for a throw at first base. He attempted a warm-up toss, but fell to the ground in pain. The injury roller coaster continues for the Mets.
Jonathon Niese was tagged for four earned runs on eight hits over 6.1 innings in Thursday's 4-2 loss to the Rockies at Citi Field. He had four walks and three strikeouts.
Niese was dealt his first loss of the season, and was a disappointment tonight after only allowing one earned run over seven innings in his last start at Houston. He should be able to bounce back fine, and is worth consideration in NL-only leagues for his next trip to the hill.
Jonathon Niese sparkled in his first start since being recalled from Triple-A. He held the Astros to just one run on four hits and a pair of walks over seven innings on Saturday. He fanned three and earned his first win of the season.
Niese kept up what he started in the minors on Saturday. After going 5-0 with an almost invisible 0.73 ERA in Triple-A he showed he can get it done at the big league level as well.
As expected, the Mets have recalled started Jonathon Niese to pitch Saturday against the Astros, according to the New York Daily News.
Niese has a 6.57 ERA in five career starts, but he has sparkled in the minors this season, going 5-0 with an 0.73 ERA in his last seven starts. He may be worth a look in NL-only leagues. In a corresponding move, Gary Sheffield was placed on the DL.
Jonathon Niese has been slated to start Saturday's game against the Astros, according to MetsBlog.com. It is uncertain who the Mets will demote to recall Niese from Triple-A.
Niese holds a poor 5.91 ERA and 1.50 WHIP over two starts (10.2 innings), and is only an option for deeper fantasy leagues.
Jonathon Niese is expected to take Fernando Nieve's next turn in the rotation, scheduled for Saturday, according to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post.
Niese has allowed seven runs in 10.2 major league innings this season. He has a 3.82 ERA at Buffalo. Especially with the lack of run support he will likely receive, he won't be a good spot-starting option when he goes this weekend.
The New York Daily News is reporting that Jonathon Niese was optioned back to Triple-A Buffalo after his start Wednesday. The move was made to make room for the returning Nelson Figueroa.
Niese lasted two starts for the Mets, and he was just average. He hasn't shown anything that would make him a solid fantasy contributor this season, so no need to jump on him if and when he comes back up.
Jonathon Niese had a fine season debut on Friday. He held the Pirates to just two runs on seven hits over six innings but did not factor in the decision. He struck out five and did not walk a man in the Mets' 7-3 win.
Niese had a nice start tonight, but it's going to take a few more outings like this in a row for us to believe in him. He had a poor record in Triple-A and likely just took advantage of a struggling Pirates' lineup in this one.
Despite a 0-2 record and a 6.55 ERA at Triple-A Buffalo, the Mets have decided to call up Jonathon Niese to start on Friday, according to MetsBlog.com.
Niese has not been good this season and he was not good last season. It's unlikely that he becomes a fantasy factor any time soon, despite the Mets faith in him. He gets the nod on Friday over veteran Ken Takahashi but he'll need to show well to keep the spot in the rotation next week.
Jonathon Niese has been sent down to minor league camp by the Mets, according to the NY Post.
Niese failed to perform well in spring training, and his demotion is not surprising. This move pushes Livan Hernandez closer to the fifth spot in the Mets' rotation.
Jonathon Niese allowed two earned runs on two hits over four innings in Tuesday's 5-1 loss to Atlanta, with three walks and three strikeouts. He gave up a two-run homer to Josh Anderson.
Niese had another poor outing, and needs to step it up if he is to stay in the running for the fifth spot in the rotation.
Jonathon Niese allowed two earned runs on two hits over two innings in Friday's 5-4 win over the Cardinals in the Grapefruit League, with two walks and two strikeouts.
Niese failed to impress in his bid to claim the No. 5 spot in the Mets' rotation. Other candidates for the job remain Tim Redding, Freddy Garcia and Livan Hernandez.
Skipper Jerry Manuel was pleased with Jonathon Niese during camp today, according to MetsBlog.com.
This is encouraging news, but Niese is not expected to beat out Tim Redding or Freddy Garcia for the fifth spot in the Mets' rotation.
