According to MLBlogs.com, Jason Schmidt is likely to retire this offseason.
Schmidt currently has no plans to pitch next year, even though he filed for free agency on Wednesday, and it's not likely that his services would garner many interested parties. The once dominant starter went just 2-2 with a 5.61 ERA in four starts last season, and was severely limited once again by his practically bionic shoulder that has seen multiple surgeries. It was a solid career, but Schmidt likely should have hung up the spikes seasons ago.
According to MLBlogs.com, Jason Schmidt has been moved from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.
The move was made to clear room for new addition Vicente Padilla on the 40-man roster. The move effectively ends Schmidt's career as a Dodger and likely his career altogether. In three seasons with LA he won just three games and had two shoulder operations.
Jason Schmidt has been placed on the 15-day disabled list after suffering a setback with his balky right shoulder, according to the Associated Press.
Schmidt's three-year tenure in Los Angeles, for which he has been paid $47 million, has just been an incomprehensible disaster. The former power righty has made only ten starts starts during that time (four this year), and seen his stuff reduced to almost nothing this season. Hopefully he realizes it's time to call it quits and go out with a little grace while he still can.
After a one-game reprieve, the Jason Schmidt experiment went back to being a disaster for the Dodgers on Wednesday. The soft-tossing righty allowed five runs in just 3.2 innings while walking three batters. L.A. lost 4-1 to the Brewers at home.
Nothing like having one of the worst starters in the majors come out to make a statement the night after your team is involved in one of the most controversial incidents of the season. The team probably would have had Schmidt throw at Prince Fielder, if only getting hit by an 81 MPH fastball hurt. Regardless, this madness can't continue much longer, and the team needs to find a viable fifth starter, and fast, if they want to be taken seriously down the stretch.
Jason Schmidt only issued one hit over six scoreless inning in Friday's 5-0 win at Atlanta. He had five walks and three strikeouts.
He pitched well, but his performance was spoiled by the five free passes. With that said, he could be a viable starter for NL-only leagues if he can work on his control.
In somewhat of an upset, Jason Schmidt has been named as the Dodgers starter for this Friday, according to MLBlogs.
It's somewhat of an upset because Schmidt has absolutely nothing left. His fastball topped out in the low '80s on Sunday with very little movement, and the Marlins batters appeared as if they were taking batting practice. Don't expect this awful experiment to go on much longer, as any team with serious title aspirations won't make it there with Schmidt in their rotation.
Jason Schmidt had an embarrassing start on Sunday, allowing five runs in three innings, while seeing his fastball top out in the low eighties. The Dodgers lost 8-6 to the Marlins at home.
The Jason Schmidt experiment has not gone well for the first place Dodgers, and isn't likely to go on much longer if he pitches at all like he did on Sunday.
Jason Schmidt has been activated from the 60-day DL following his recovery from shoulder surgery, according to TSN.
Schmidt will make his first start since 2007 tonight against the Reds at Dodger Stadium. He is worth consideration as a flier, but should not be penciled into lineups in his first game back.
Jason Schmidt is slated to start Monday's game against the Reds, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.
Schmidt has been plagued by injuries, and will be making his first appearance in the majors since 2007. He is too risky to consider for fantasy duty in his first game back, but is certainly worth a look as a flier if you need pitching help.
According to MLBlogs.com, Jason Schmidt earned the second win of his Triple-A rehab assignment on Wednesday. The former ace allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings.
Schmidt's line doesn't seem that great, but he did strike out five, did not walk a batter and threw 60 of his 85 pitches for strikes. The Dodgers are looking for pitching help down the stretch and Schmidt just may be the answer.
The LA Times reports that injury plagued starter Jason Schmidt threw 7.2 scoreless innings in a Triple-A rehab start.
Schmidt threw 104 pitches and allowed just five hits and a walk while striking out seven. This was easily the most encouraging sign in the hurlers path back to the majors.
Jason Schmidt allowed five hits with six strikeouts and three walks over seven innings during his rehab start with Single-A Inland Empire Sunday, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. He has been recovering from right shoulder surgery.
His pitch location was better, but his velocity was down. Schmidt has not pitched in the majors since 2007, and is only worth holding in deeper NL-only leagues. He could be back in mid-June.
Jason Schmidt is set to being a minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. "We still want to wait and see how he comes out," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said. "He threw a bullpen (in extended spring training on Thursday)."
Schmidt will toss pitches for the Single-A Inland Empire squad on his 30-day rehab stint. While the club continues to be hopeful that Schmidt will be able to provide positive returns, we are highly skeptical of a hurler who hasn't started a major league game since 2007.
After Jason Schmidt's performance on Wednesday his next scheduled start has been pushed back, according to the LA Daily News.
Schmidt is pitching in extended spring training in an attempt to come back from shoulder surgery. If he makes it all the way back to the big club don't expect him until May or June. And there's no telling whether he'll be effective when he gets there as he's been struggling mightily with his velocity.
The Los Angeles Times reports that Jason Schmidt threw 89 pitches in an extended spring training game. He has pitched on four days' rest four consecutive times as he battles back from a shoulder injury.
Schmidt should be able to join the Triple-A squad soon as the next step in his rehab. The Dodgers could use his presence, if healthy, in their starting lineup. However, fantasy owners should hold off until he proves he can still be effective.
Manager Joe Torre noted that Jason Schmidt (shoulder) will start the season on the disabled list, according to MLB.com.
Schmidt is not going to hold the fifth spot in the Dodgers' rotation, and does not garner fantasy attention in anything but deeper NL-only leagues.
Jason Schmidt allowed three runs on three hits in three and one-third innings Sunday against the Padres.
This was Schmidt's first loss of the spring, and it came with mixed results. His four strikeouts indicated his velocity was up, but his three walks raised some red flags.
Pitcher Jason Schmidt tossed 45 pitches in a minor league outing against the Brewers on Tuesday. He allowed six hits and two runs, walked one, and struck out three. Schmidt's fastball reached 88 mph, MLB.com reports. "It felt pretty good -- the best I've felt as long as I can remember," he says. "I didn't have command all the way through. That's going to come. But I didn't have fatigue as before.
Schmidt is headed in the right direction, but we've seemingly been down this path before. We need to see a lot more before we can believe that he offers anything to fantasy owners. Schmidt won't be ready for the start of the season and probably shouldn't be drafted in any format or league size.
Jason Schmidt allowed no runs, one hit, and two walks in Monday's 10-8 loss to Oakland. He struck out two in the outing,
Earlier in the day, manager Joe Torre said Schmidt was out of the running for the opening day rotation. Schmidt needed some extra time off prior to taking to the mound today. He seems a good bet to join the rotation at some point this season, but consider him too risky to draft at this point.
The Daily News reports that manager Joe Torre said that Jason Schmidt is out of the running for the fifth spot in the rotation prior to his spring start on Monday.
Schmidt was dismissed simply because he needed some extra time off between starts. He will likely make a few starts for the Dodgers at some point this season, but April may be too soon to expect him to do so.
Jason Schmidt had a rough start for the Dodgers on Monday, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks. He did fan a couple.
Schmidt now has an ERA of 13.50 for the spring and is pretty risky for fantasy purposes going into this season.
Jason Schmidt, who is recovering from a shoulder ailment, is slated to start Monday's game against the Rangers, according to the LA Daily News. He will pitch one inning.
Schmidt will remain a risky fantasy option due to his poor track record with durability, and he should be left for the deepest of NL-only leagues.
The Dodgers' Jason Schmidt said his shoulder felt good after his throwing session, according to the L.A. Times.
Schmidt should still be avoided in fantasy drafts due to his penchant for getting injured. He signed a $47 million contract before the 2007 season, and has given L.A. all of six starts and a 6.31 ERA for their investment.
Jason Schmidt reportedly looked great during today's intrasquad game, according to the LA Daily News. Schmidt fired 11 pitches, nine for strikes, and put down three (Juan Pierre, Mark Loretta, Matt Kemp) of the four batters he faced.
This is encouraging news as Schmidt competes for the fifth spot in the Dodgers' rotation. He could be worth a look as a flier for NL-only leagues.
Jason Schmidt has his sights set on the fifth spot in the Dodgers' rotation heading into 2009, according to the club's official site. After multiple surgeries, he's expected to be 100 percent this season.
Schmidt has only started six games in the past two years after signing a three-year, $47 million deal two winters ago. The Dodgers certainly won't get their money's worth for the net worth of the contract, but if he's back to being the pitcher they signed, they could get it this year.
