Newsbreakers

October 1, 2009

Clayton Richard pitched seven scoreless, one-hit innings on Wednesday, helping the Padres to a 5-0 win over the Dodgers.

Our View:

It was the first time he had allowed just one hit in any amount of innings in 34 career starts. He should be a mainstay in the Padres rotation for the next few seasons.

September 24, 2009

Clayton Richard didn't factor into the decison on Thursday as the Padres beat the Rockies 5-4. Richard went six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out two.

Our View:

When Richard keeps his stuff under control, he can be a very effective pitcher, and he did so tonight. Two walks are a very good sign, and Richard has now put together two very good starts in a row.

September 19, 2009

Clayton Richard pitched well but did not factor into the decision on Saturday as the Padres beat the Pirates 2-1. Richard went six innings and allowed one unearned run on four hits while walking three and striking out five.

Our View:

Richard was very good in his six innings today, and he deserved to get a win. It looks like he has stated to control his fastball a bit better as of late, and if he can keep the walk total down, he can be effective.

September 13, 2009

Clayton Richard allowed three runs on three hits and three walks over just five innings on Sunday. He fanned eight, but didn't stay in the game long enough to earn a decision as the Padres rolled the Rockies 7-3.

Our View:

Richard has great stuff, but needs to improve his control. While the eight Ks Sunday were impressive, the three walks in five frames is concerning. He has walked 26 in 45 innings since being traded to the Pads.

September 7, 2009

Clayton Richard was lit up for six earned runs on eight hits over a mere four innings in Monday's 9-4 loss at San Francisco. He had one walk with three strikeouts, and gave up two homers.

Our View:

Richard was a disappointment after only allowing one earned run over 6.2 innings in his previous start against the Nationals. He allowed six earned runs in two of his last three starts.

September 1, 2009

Clayton Richard held the Nationals to just one run on four hits and a pair of walks over 6.2 innings on Tuesday. He fanned six and picked up his eighth win of the season with a 4-1 Padres victory.

Our View:

Two of Richard's last three starts have been downright dominant and the young pitcher looks to be getting comfortable with his new team. He's now 4-1 as a Padre and looks to have a bright future ahead of him.

August 27, 2009

Clayton Richard got roughed up on Thursday night in his first Padres loss, allowing six runs in just 2.1 innings as the Braves won 9-1.

Our View:

Richard now has a 5.22 ERA and 1.81 WHIP in six starts for the Pads, and is no longer a solid NL-only option.

August 22, 2009

Clayton Richard kept the red hot Cardinals in check on Friday. He tossed six shutout innings, allowing just five hits and three walks over six innings. The rookie hurler fanned six and won his seventh game of the season after the 4-0 victory.

Our View:

Richard fared much better in this start than he did last time he faced the Redbirds. He allowed three runs in just 3.2 innings against them on August 16th. A warning sign: nine walks in his last 9.2 innings.

August 11, 2009

Clayton Richard improved to 2-0 in a Padres uniform on Tuesday night, allowing four runs in six innings, as the Pads demolished the Brewers 13-6 in Milwaukee.

Our View:

Richard wasn't super solid on Tuesday night, but he didn't need to be. Until he pitches a clunker in a Pads uniform, consider him a decent bet to start.

August 6, 2009

Picking up his first win as a Padre, Clayton Richard became a part of an ageless National League tradition, shutting down the Mets. The former White Sock actually allowed three runs and walked four in 5.2 innings, but still won his first NL start.

Our View:

The start snapped a streak of three straight games in which Richard gave up just one run, but he should be a good bet going forward pitching in the decidedly pitcher friendly Petco Park after coming from the bandbox that is U.S. Cellular Field.

August 2, 2009

Clayton Richard only surrendered one earned run on two hits over 5.2 innings in Saturday's 4-2 win over the Brewers at Petco Park. He had three walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:

Richard enjoyed a solid debut with San Diego after being dealt by Chicago. He should benefit from leaving launching pad U.S. Cellular Field for pitcher-friendly Petco, evidenced by tonight's outing. He is worth targeting in NL-only leagues as a flier if dangling on the waiver wire.

August 1, 2009

Clayton Richard will start for the Padres on Saturday against the Brewers, MLB.com confirms. The Padres added Richard on Friday as part of the Jake Peavy deal. Edward Mujica was slated to start, but he will return to the bullpen.

Our View:

It will be a classic matchup on Saturday: Richard vs. Mike Burns. Can you feel the excitement? Richard will now work half of his games in one of the league's best pitching parks, but we still don't think he'll have any fantasy value.

July 31, 2009

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the White Sox have sent starter Clayton Richard, prospect Aaron Poreda and righties Adam Russell and Dexter Carter for Jake Peavy.

Our View:

This is a great deal for the Padres. They finally unload Peavy, who is currently injured and owed a boatload of money, for a nice haul of young arms. Richard will likely join the Padres rotation right away and the other three look to help down the road. Poreda was the Sox's number one pitching prospect in 2008.

July 26, 2009

In what was maybe his last start before being sent to the bullpen, Clayton Richard pitched eight dominant innings in Detroit on Sunday, limiting the Tigers to one run and five hits. The White Sox won 5-1 to prevent a four game sweep in Motown.

Our View:

Richard used his fastball to great effect, and lowered his ERA to 4.65. If Bartolo Colon falters in his return to the rotation, expect Richard to quickly get the call to start again.

July 26, 2009

The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that White Sox' starter Clayton Richard is heading to the bullpen after his start on Sunday. With John Danks coming back, the team opted to stick with Bartolo Colon in the rotation instead of Richard.

Our View:

Richard has had his share of struggles this season in the rotation, but he is coming off what is probably his best start of the year against the Rays. Richard will likely start again at some point this season, but it looks like he is headed to the pen for now.

July 21, 2009

Clayton Richard only issued one earned run on four hits over eight innings in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Rays at U.S. Cellular Field. He had two walks and fired seven strikeouts.

Our View:

The Sox had a 2-1 lead when Richard exited, but the Rays rallied to score two runs in the top of the ninth, unfortunately handing Richard a no-decision. On the positive side, his spot in the rotation should be safe for now following tonight's strong performance.

July 10, 2009

Clayton Richard remains in Chicago's rotation for the time being, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:

Richard has been struggling and gave up six earned runs over one inning in his last start against Cleveland, but skipper Ozzie Guillen noted that he will remain in the rotation due to a lack of options. Richard's job is safe right now, but could be replaced by Bartolo Colon eventually if he does not get on track soon.

July 9, 2009

Clayton Richard may be on thin ice as a starting pitcher after giving up six earned runs over one inning in Thursday's loss to Cleveland, according to the Chicago Tribune. Skipper Ozzie Guillen said, "It is up to him. We did it with a couple of guys, and they did grab it. We will see what happens next start, if we are going to give him another start."

Our View:

Richard's next start would tentatively be July 19 against Baltimore, three games after the All-Star break. He would only be an option for deeper fantasy leagues if the Sox give him another chance to prove his worth in the rotation.

July 9, 2009

Clayton Richard was lit up for six earned runs on four hits over one inning of work in Thursday's 10-8 loss to the rival Indians at U.S. Cellular Field. He had three walks and one strikeout, and most of the damage came on a Kelly Shoppach grand slam.

Our View:

Richard falls to 3-3, and allowed 10 earned runs over his last two starts. Richard should only be considered in deeper fantasy leagues for his next trip to the mound.

July 5, 2009

Clayton Richard was tagged for four earned runs on eight hits over a mere 3.2 innings in Sunday's 6-3 loss at Kansas City. He had three strikeouts with no walks.

Our View:

Richard falls to 3-2, and has allowed four earned runs in each of his last three starts. He has a bright future ahead of him in the majors, but should only be considered in AL-only leagues for now.

June 30, 2009

Clayton Richard gave up four earned runs on four hits over six innings in Tuesday's 11-4 win at Cleveland. He had one walk and fired six strikeouts.

Our View:

The game was called after seven innings due to rain, and Richard ends the night with his third win of the season. He snapped a four-game skid without a win, and the young hurler is worth consideration in AL-only leagues for his next start.

June 25, 2009

Clayton Richard gave up four earned runs on six hits over 4.1 innings of work in Thursday's 6-5 win over the Dodgers at U.S. Cellular Field. He had one walk and one strikeout.

Our View:

Richard did not pitch well today, and is lucky he takes a no-decision rather than a loss. Richard has gone five straight starts without a win, and the young hurler should only be considered in deeper leagues for his next battle.

June 21, 2009

According to the Chicago Tribune, the White Sox have adjusted their rotation. Left-hander Clayton Richard will be moved up to Thursday to face the Dodgers.

Our View:

The Dodgers' lineup has some imposing lefties and and speedsters the Sox felt that this would be a superior matchup with Richard throwing from the left side and using his nasty pickoff move. Still, don't feel too comfortable starting anyone against the Dodgers. Jose Contreras will start Friday against the Cubs.

June 20, 2009

Clayton Richard did not factor into the decision on Saturday as the White Sox beat the Reds 10-8. Richard went three innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits while walking one and striking out four.

Our View:

Richard wasn't good tonight, but his offense bailed him out. His ERA is at 4.03, which isn't terrible, but his fantasy value is still low. He could maybe be an option in AL-only leagues, but there are probably better options.

June 12, 2009

Clayton Richard pitched well in Friday's 7-2 loss at Milwaukee, as he allowed one run (not earned) on four hits over five innings. He had three walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:

He was forced to take a no-decision, but fantasy owners should be encouraged by the young hurler's performance tonight. He trimmed his ERA to 3.76.

June 8, 2009

Clayton Richard gave up three earned runs on five hits over 4.2 innings in Monday's 4-2 loss to the Tigers at U.S. Cellular Field. He issued five walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:

Richard struggled with control today, evidenced by his five walks. He held a solid 2.83 ERA over 28.2 innings in May, but he is struggling so far in June as he allowed eight earned runs and nine walks over two starts. He is worth holding out of fantasy lineups until he proves to be effective again.

June 3, 2009

Clayton Richard gave up three home runs in Wednesday's 5-3 loss to the A's. He gave up a total of five runs in 5.1 innings on seven hits and four walks.

Our View:

This could have been a lot worse for Richard. Despite all of the base runners, all three home runs were solo shots. His five starts have come against the Indians, Blue Jays, Royals, Pirates, and A's so keep that in mind when evaluating his solid numbers.

May 29, 2009

Clayton Richard won his second straight game on Friday with seven innings of two-run ball. He limited the Royals to just six hits and a walk while striking out seven.

Our View:

Richard has been very good since moving to the starting rotation. His first start was a rocky one, but his last three have been nothing short of fantastic. He's worth a look in deeper leagues and if he keeps pitching like this, everyone will notice.

May 23, 2009

Clayton Richard picked up his first decision of the year on Saturday, beating the Pirates with six scoreless innings off four hits, three walks and a career-high eight strikeouts in six innings.

Our View:

Richard was the subject of trade talks this past week in the eventual botched deal involving Jake Peavy but appeared unfazed. He's been great his past two starts but still has plenty to prove before he can be relied upon in fantasy.

May 21, 2009

Clayton Richard is believed to be part of Chicago's pending deal to acquire Jake Peavy from San Diego, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

This would be a good deal for the 25-year-old hurler, as he would be assured of a rotation spot in San Diego, and would get to play his home games at pitcher-friendly Petco Park. His fantasy stock could improve as well.

May 18, 2009

Clayton Richard allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits over seven innings in Monday's 3-2 loss at Toronto. He had three walks and three strikeouts, and gave up a solo home run to Kevin Millar.

Our View:

Richard pitched well other than the three free passes, but was dealt a no decision as his teammates did not offer enough offensive support for him to win.

May 11, 2009

Clayton Richard, who will serve as the demoted Jose Contreras' replacement in Chicago's rotation, will start Tuesday, not his originally scheduled Wednesday, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View:

Mark Buehrle's turn was pushed back one day to give the veteran an extra day of rest after he threw 110 pitches on Thursday. Richard does avoid a matchup against Cliff Lee and instead get the unreliable Jeremy Sowers, though Richard isn't any more dependable himself and should probably be avoided.

May 11, 2009

Clayton Richard will replace Jose Contreras in Chicago's rotation, according to the Chicago Tribune. Contreras was demoted to the minors after struggling and going winless over his first six starts.

Our View:

Richard will make his first start Wednesday against Cleveland. He held a 4.80 ERA and 1.80 WHIP over 15 innings of relief, and is only worth acquiring for AL-only and deeper mixed leagues.

April 4, 2009

Clayton Richard has made Chicago's opening day roster, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Richard will serve as a long-reliever, and will be counted on with Jose Contreras and Bartolo Colon only expected to be 5-6 inning starters. Richard is worth consideration for deeper AL-only leagues, namely as he would be a top candidate to move into the rotation if one of their starters is injured.

March 27, 2009

Clayton Richard allowed seven runs on five hits and two walks in hi Friday start. He recorded exactly one out.

Our View:

This was a horrible start and could seriously damage Richard's chances of earning the fifth spot in the rotation. Still, he holds little fantasy value even if he gets it.

March 21, 2009

Clayton Richard is gaining ground in his bid for the fifth spot in Chicago's rotation, according to the Chicago Tribune. Richard is competing with Bartolo Colon for the job and skipper Ozzie Guillen said, "Richard is the one throwing the ball better."

Our View:

Richard held a 1.55 WHIP over 47.2 innings with the Sox in 2008, and should be left for AL-only leagues as a flier if he earns the fifth spot.

March 12, 2009

Clayton Richard was not too sharp against Kansas City on Thursday, allowing two runs off five hits and three walks while striking out two in 3.1 innings of work.

Our View:

With Jose Contreras and Bartolo Colon getting healthier with each passing day, it appears more and more likely that they'll be able to fill the final two spots in Chicago's starting rotation, which would relegate Richard to middle relief. Still, he would be one of the top candidates to start if anything happened to any of Chicago's five starters, something that is bound to occur at some point over the course of the season.

March 7, 2009

Clayton Richard was solid against Texas on Saturday, failing to surrender a run off four hits and zero walks, though he didn't strike anyone out.

Our View:

Unfortunately for those that thought Richard made for a possible deep sleeper this season, it looks like both Jose Contreras and Bartolo Colon may be healed up by the start of the year, meaning Richard would be relegated to the bullpen.

March 2, 2009

Starter Clayton Richard's second appearance this spring was not as promising as his first as he allowed four runs, three earned, in the third inning against the Mariners on Monday. He had three strikeouts in three innings.

Our View:

The 6-foot-5 southpaw was battered last season in 13 major league appearances, but he should still compete for a rotation spot this spring. The White Sox like his sinker, but he may ultimately make for a better reliever than starter.
