Newsbreakers

March 16, 2009

Cale Iorg has been reassigned to minor league camp by the Tigers, according to MLB.com. Catcher Alex Avila was reassigned with Iorg as well.

Our View:

Both players were non-roster invitees, and these moves were to be expected. Iorg is viewed as a "shortstop of the future" for Detroit, but there is no room for him at the position right now.

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski told MLB.com on Monday, "I think Cale Iorg is going to be an All-Star, and I think he's going to be an All-Star very soon -- I mean, real soon."

Our View:

Iorg spent the season at Class A Lakeland, so it's probably not as soon as Dombrowski made it sound. Don't count on the prospect to have an impact in 2009 despite the departure of Edgar Renteria. Triple A shortstop Danny Worth will probably be given a long look in the spring.

July 17, 2008

Cale Iorg has been placed on the DL at Single-A Lakeland due to a right shoulder strain, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View:

He is a promising young shortstop, but it will be a while before we see him in a Tigers' uniform.

April 17, 2008

Cale Iorg, a sixth-round pick last year, hit his third home run in as many games on Wednesday at High-A. He is now hitting .333-3-7 this season.

Our View:

It’s nice to see the Tigers prospect get off to a good start. The Tigers farm system was thinned out after dealing several good prospects during the offseason for Edgar Renteria, Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis.
