SEASON

IPWSKERA

Newsbreakers

September 5, 2009

Mitchell Boggs only issued one earned run on five hits over seven innings in Saturday's 2-1 win at Pittsburgh. He had two walks with three strikeouts.

Our View:

Boggs had a strong outing, but was forced to settle for a no-decision rather than a win, as the game was tied at 1-1 when he exited. On the positive side, he trimmed his ERA to 4.11 and had his longest start of the season.

August 29, 2009

Mitchell Boggs had by far the best start of his short major league career on Saturday night, allowing three runs in six innings while throwing only 88 pitches, as the Cardinals beat the Nationals 9-4 at home.

Our View:

Boggs has struggled with deep counts and walks this season, but issued only one free pass on Saturday night. Still, his value is limited to spot-starting in NL-only formats.

August 26, 2009

Mitchell Boggs will take the injured Kyle Lohse's rotation turn this Saturday against the Nationals, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

Boggs has a 4.58 ERA and 2.01 WHIP in 37.1 major league innings this season, but for what it is worth, the team has gone 5-2 in games in which he has started.

August 22, 2009

Mitchell Boggs has ben recalled by the St. Louis Cardinals, according to the Twitter page of beat writer Matthew Leach. Boggs will take the place of the injured Kyle Lohse on the roster.

Our View:

Boggs was optioned just two days ago, but because of the injury he is allowed to be recalled. He should return to his role as a long reliever/fifth starter, but he won't see enough starts to make him fantasy worthy.

August 20, 2009

The Cardinals have optioned spot starter Mitchell Boggs back to Triple-A Memphis.

Our View:

With John Smoltz set to join the team Thursday in San Diego, the Cards needed to clear a spot on the roster and, frankly, have no more use for Boggs at this point (since Smoltz will take over the fifth starter role). He may get another call-up when the rosters expand in September.

August 19, 2009

Mitchell Boggs struggled against the Dodger on Tuesday. He allowed five runs on nine hits and three walks before getting yanked after just four innings. He fell to 1-2 on the season as the Dodgers polished off the Redbirds 7-3.

Our View:

Boggs has been very shaky since earning the fifth starter job in St. Louis' rotation. He has allowed more than two base runners per inning in his three outings and could lose his job if John Smoltz lands in STL.

August 11, 2009

Mitchell Boggs overcame four early runs on Tuesday to pitch six innings of four-run ball, but still took his first loss, as the Cardinals fell 5-4.

Our View:

It's encouraging that Boggs locked down after his shaky beginning, and he could be worth a spot-start if he gets another chance in the Cards rotation.

August 10, 2009

Mitchell Boggs is expected to make a spot-start in place of the ailing Todd Wellemeyer (elbow inflammation) Tuesday against Cincinnati, according to MLBblogs.com.

Our View:

Wellemeyer could land on the DL, and Boggs is worth a look as a flier for NL-only leagues. He has a favorable match-up against the Reds (48-62) at Busch Stadium as well.

August 1, 2009

Mitchell Boggs has been sent back down to Triple-A Memphis by the Cardinals, according to the Associated Press. Shortstop Khalil Greene was activated from the 15-day DL as the adjoining move.

Our View:

Boggs allowed two earned runs, six hits and five walks over five innings in Friday's start against the Astros, and apparently did not pitch well enough to push for another start.

July 31, 2009

Mitchell Boggs allowed two earned runs on six hits over five innings in Friday's 4-3 win over the Astros at Busch Stadium. He had five walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:

Boggs did not last very long, and had a high walk total, meaning it is uncertain if he showed the Cardinals enough to earn another start in the rotation.

July 31, 2009

As expected, Mitchell Boggs has been recalled by the Cardinals from Triple-A Memphis, according to Scout.com. Outfielder Nick Stavinoha was sent down to make room on the roster.

Our View:

Boggs was recalled to start tonight's home game against the Astros. He could work his way into the rotation if he pitches well, and is worth targeting in NL-only leagues.

July 28, 2009

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that the Cardinals plan to recall pitcher Mitchell Boggs to start on Friday in place of struggling starter Todd Wellemeyer. Boggs is 1-0 with a 3.22 ERA with the team this season.

Our View:

Boggs won't be recalled until Friday before the game, but he will start against the Astros that night. Boggs needs to get deeper in games this time around, but he has been successful as of late in Triple-A and he looks to be a better option than Wellemeyer.

May 15, 2009

Mitchell Boggs was sent down to Triple-A Memphis by the Cardinals to make room for newly activated Brendan Ryan, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Boggs made four starts for the Cardinals during his stint.

Our View:

This move seems to indicate that Chris Carpenter will be ready to move back into the Cards' rotation in the near future. Boggs wasn't bad with the Cardinals, and he should be the first to be called back up if the team runs into any other injuries with their staff.

May 14, 2009

Mitchell Boggs did his job for the Cardinals on Thursday in their 5-1 win over the Pirates. Boggs went 4.1 innings and allowed one run on nine hits with two walks and one strikeout.

Our View:

Boggs got the quick hook from manager Tony La Russa tonight, but he only gave up one run. He got himself out of trouble on several occasions by getting ground balls, which is a positive attribute for a young pitcher. His fantasy value is pretty low due to the impending return of ace Chris Carpenter, however.

May 11, 2009

Mitchell Boggs' next turn in the rotation has been pushed to Thursday against the Pirates, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

Pushing him back from Tuesday will allow Todd Wellemeyer and Joel Pineiro to remain on regular rest, while Kyle Lohse and Adam Wainwright get an extra day. Due to an off day May 18, the Cardinals will next need a fifth starter May 23, which is a possible return date for Chris Carpenter against the Royals.

April 26, 2009

Pitcher Mitchell Boggs will remain in the rotation for the week ahead. He will start on Thursday against the Nationals, MLB.com confirms.

Our View:

Boggs will remain in the rotation as long as he keeps pitching well. The Cardinals won't have Chris Carpenter back for a while. Boggs is worth a look in NL-only leagues.

April 25, 2009

Mitchell Boggs looked sharp in his first start of the season as the Cardinals beat the Cubs 8-2 on Saturday. He allowed just one unearned run in 5.2 innings of work. He scattered six hits and a walk, while striking out three Cubbies.

Our View:

Boggs is filling in for the injured Chris Carpenter and he should see regular action for the next month or two as Carp recovers from an oblique strain. He may be worth a look in NL-only leagues, but his fantasy potential is limited.

April 21, 2009

MLB.com reports that the Cardinals are going with Mitchell Boggs as their fifth starter in place of Chris Carpenter. He will make his first start on Saturday at home against the Cubs.

Our View:

The decision was between Boggs and P.J. Walters and the team decided on Boggs because of their belief that Walters can get warmed up quicker. As a result, they will use Walters out of the bullpen. Boggs does not have much fantasy value, but he is probably worth keeping an eye on. He figures to lose his spot once Carpenter does return from his oblique injury.

April 20, 2009

Pitching coach Dave Duncan said that the Cardinals are leaning toward starting Mitchell Boggs against the Cubs on Saturday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

P.J. Walters got the first chance at a start in Chris Carpenter's absence, and while he did strike out seven batters, he also gave up three runs while lasting just four innings and it appears that he could be in danger of getting sent back to the minors. Don't consider starting Boggs, especially against a dangerous Cubs lineup, until he can prove effective through his first two or three starts.

April 15, 2009

Mitchell Boggs has been recalled by the Cardinals from Triple-A Memphis, according to the Associated Press. Brad Thompson was optioned to Memphis as the adjoining move.

Our View:

Boggs could stick around as the long man out of the bullpen and is a candidate for starts down the road if P.J. Walters falters.

April 9, 2009

Mitchell Boggs will start the season opener for Triple-A Memphis today, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

Boggs held a 1.88 WHIP over 34 innings last season with St. Louis, but could serve as a spot-starter this season, if the club suffers any injuries in the rotation.

March 17, 2009

Mitchell Boggs was optioned to minor league camp by the Cardinals, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

Boggs was not in the mix for a rotation spot, but could be back at some point during the season as a spot-starter, depending on injuries.

February 20, 2009

Mitchell Boggs, who has been slowed by shoulder tightness, is slated to throw off a mound Saturday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

Boggs is not competing for a starting role, and is believed to be behind Kyle McClellan and Brad Thompson for the top reserve spots, meaning Boggs does not merit fantasy attention.

February 18, 2009

Mitchell Boggs participated in drills on Wednesday, according to the Cardinals' official site. He's expected to get back on the mound on Thursday.

Our View:

This is great news for the Cardinals as Boggs is currently sixth on St. Louis' depth chart for the starting rotation. He started six games with the Cards in 2008, so he has some big league experience which will help his case, especially if someone in the current rotation goes down during the spring.

February 14, 2009

Mitchell Boggs will be examined after experiencing tightness in his right shoulder during early bullpen sessions, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:

If healthy, Boggs will be competing for the No. 6 spot on the Cardinals' depth chart among starting pitchers.
