Newsbreakers

August 30, 2009

Mat Latos was coming off a dominant performance against the Braves, but he looked very much like a rookie on Sunday as the Padres fell to the Marlins 6-4. Latos went 3.1 innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits while walking two and striking out two.

Our View:

Latos has either been really good or really bad in each of his starts this season, but that's what you get with a rookie sometimes. The experience he is getting this season will pay off in 2010, and he should be a staple in the Padres' rotation next season.

August 25, 2009

Mat Latos showed why he is one of the more highly regarded pitching prospects in the game on Tuesday as he shut down the Braves for seven innings. Latos allowed only two hits and struck out four in the Padres' 12 inning win.

Our View:

Latos has been struggling over his last few starts, but he looks to have a promising future at the top of the Padre rotation. The team may shut him down early this season, but he will be a big name to watch for the 2010 season.

August 20, 2009

After a strong start to his major league career, Mat Latos got roughed for the second straight outing on Wednesday as the Padres fell to the Cubs 7-1. Latos lasted only 3.2 innings and allowed five runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out five.

Our View:

Latos won his first four starts, but he has come back to Earth over his last two outings. He was a very trendy pickup for awhile, but he will likely be shut down before the season is out due to an innings limit, so he is not a guy you should run out and pick up at this point.

August 14, 2009

Mat Latos got roughed up for the first time in his young major league career on Friday night, allowing seven runs in just four innings, as the Padres lost 9-2 in St. Louis.

Our View:

Latos had won four straight starts coming into tonight. The loss came against a very powerful Cardinals lineup, the best he had seen so far, so expect him to bounce back in his next outing, which will likely come against the Braves, a team he has already held in check, next week.

August 9, 2009

Mat Latos held the Mets to just one run on four hits and three walks over six innings Saturday. He fanned seven and earned his fourth win this season.

Our View:

The rookie is putting together a fine season. He lowered his ERA to 2.43 and he has yet to allow more than two runs in any start since being called up. Keep him active in all formats.

August 3, 2009

Mat Latos only issued two earned runs on six hits over seven innings in Monday's 4-2 win over the Braves at Petco Park. He had two walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:

Latos improved his record to 3-1 and trimmed his ERA to 2.66. The rookie has earned a win in three straight starts, and should remain active in fantasy leagues for his next turn in the Padres' rotation.

August 3, 2009

MLB.com is reporting that Padres' starting pitcher Mat Latos is expected to be shut down after the month of August. The Padres want to limit the youngsters' innings this season, and he will likely only make four or five more starts.

Our View:

Latos has been outstanding thus far in his three starts, but fantasy owners should consider this news before adding him. He is a good bet for production now, but with fantasy playoffs right around the corner you need to prepare to be without Latos for the month of September.

July 29, 2009

Mat Latos was dominant in his third major league start on Wednesday, allowing just one run and three hits in seven innings, as the Padres trounced the Reds 7-1 on the road.

Our View:

If not for a Jerry Hairston Jr. home run in the fourth inning, he might have thrown a no-hitter. If you haven't already looked at him, he's definitely worth an add in every format if you need pitching.

July 24, 2009

Mat Latos allowed two earned runs on five hits over 5.2 innings in Friday's 6-2 win at Washington. He had two walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:

Latos earned his first career win in his second start tonight, and is worth targeting as a flier for NL-only leagues. He has a 3.72 ERA.

July 19, 2009

Mat Latos was hit with the loss in his first major league start on Sunday as the Padres fell to the Rockies 6-1. Latos went four innings and allowed two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out four.

Our View:

Even though he took the loss today, Latos was impressive in his first start. He was on a 75-pitch limit, which accounts for him only going four innings, but he managed to strike out four in that time. Assuming he stays in the rotation for a considerable amound of time, he should be viewed as a nice option in NL-only leagues going forward.

July 18, 2009

As previously rumored, Mat Latos will indeed be called up from Double-A San Antonio and start for the Padres on Sunday, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Latos is widely considered the Pads best pitching prospect, and impressed at last Sunday's futures game in St. Louis. He is 5-1 with a 1.91 ERA in nine starts for San Antonio, and has struck out 46 and walked just nine in 47 innings of work. Batters are hitting only .192 against him. He is worth a look in most formats if you are in need of pitching.

July 14, 2009

MLB.com is reporting that the Padres may call up top pitching prospect Mat Latos to start on Sunday. Latos has dominated minor league hitting over the last couple seasons, and the Padres feel like he is ready to join the rotation.

Our View:

Latos has very little minor league experience, but he has been absolutely dominant in his time there. It seems unlikely that he will dominate at the big league level like he has in the minors, but he is a name to remember for the second half of this season and next year for sure.

June 5, 2009

Mat Latos improved to 2-0 for Double-A San Antonio after throwing 6.2 scoreless innings on Thursday. He allowed five hits, one walk and fanned eight.

Our View:

Latos, arguably the Padres' best pitching prospect, has been downright amazing so far this season. He is now 5-0 with a 0.42 ERA and 17 hits allowed in 43 innings between Low-A and Double-A.

March 2, 2009

Mat Latos allowed his third home run in just two appearances on Monday. Corey Hart took him deep in the Padres 4-3 win.

Our View:

Latos really had little chance to make the opening day roster to begin with, but he can expect a red slip in his locker pretty soon following these outings.
