Newsbreakers

September 8, 2009

Gaby Sanchez has been recalled from Triple-A New Orleans.

Our View:

Sanchez is 0-for-9 in the majors this season, but could see some playing time down the stretch if the Marlins fall further out of the wild card race.

August 28, 2009

Gaby Sanchez has been optioned to Triple-A New Orleans.

Our View:

Sanchez failed to record a hit in seven at-bats during his most recent call-up.

August 18, 2009

The Florida Marlins have recalled first baseman Gaby Sanchez from Triple-A New Orleans, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. The team optioned pitcher Rick Vandenhurk in a corresponding move.

Our View:

Sanchez was sent down after the team acquired Nick Johnson, but with Johnson ailing they felt like they needed more infield depth. Sanchez could see some time while Johnson is hurting, but not enough to make him worth of a fantasy roster spot.

August 1, 2009

The Marlins have optioned infielder Gaby Sanchez back to Triple-A New Orleans.

Our View:

With Nick Johnson in town, the Marlins no longer had a need for this corner infielder. Sanchez will probably come back up this September.

July 21, 2009

Gaby Sanchez has been recalled by the Florida Marlins, according to the Miami Herald. Sanchez will replace starting pitcher Andrew Miller on the roster, as Miller was optioned by the team on Monday night.

Our View:

Sanchez has been hitting well in New Orleans all season, and one would think that the Fish plan on playing him regularly since it seems unlikely they called him up to sit the bench. Sanchez could be worth a flier in NL-only leagues, but his fantasy value will depend on the amount of time he sees in the lineup.

July 6, 2009

The Red Sox have apparently asked Florida about the availability of Gaby Sanchez, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:

Sanchez has been unable to crack Florida's roster despite a .300 average with eight home runs in 190 at-bats at Triple-A New Orleans this season. He'd provide nice, young depth at first base and DH for Boston, although it appears, at least for now, that the Red Sox are unwilling to give up the pieces in the bullpen that the Marlins are asking for in return.

May 7, 2009

Gaby Sanchez was placed on the disabled list on Thursday at Triple-A New Orleans with a right knee injury, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Our View:

Sanchez had been hitting well in Triple-A and there was a chance he could have been called up in the near future to Florida, though that opportunity will now have to wait until he gets back to full health.

May 6, 2009

Gaby Sanchez is awaiting results of an MRI on his injured knee, according to the Miami Herald. He injured his knee in a collision at home plate and could miss up to six weeks.

Our View:

Sanchez was hitting very well at Triple-A and there had been some talk of putting Jorge Cantu back at third base and calling Sanchez up to man first. However, that plan of action will have to wait at least a couple of months.

May 1, 2009

Gaby Sanchez went 3-for-5 with his third home run of the season for Triple-A New Orleans on Friday.

Our View:

Sanchez is now hitting .333-3-15, but he likely needs someone in Florida to get hurt in order to get a chance considering how well Jorge Cantu and Emilio Bonifacio have fared thus far.

March 31, 2009

Gaby Sanchez has been sent down to Triple-A New Orleans by the Marlins, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

Our View:

He was competing for the starting gig at first base, but now the Marlins will start the season with Jorge Cantu at first and Emilio Bonifacio at third. Sanchez was hindered by a knee injury in spring training.

March 27, 2009

Gaby Sanchez, who had missed time due to a knee injury, returned to action on Thursday, going 0-for-1 at the plate.

Our View:

It was good to see Sanchez back out on the field, though his average dipped to .194 this spring. He now has just a week and a half to prove he deserves to be Florida's Opening Day starting first baseman. If he continues to struggle, the Marlins could opt to start Emilio Bonifacio at third and move Jorge Cantu over to first.

March 24, 2009

Gaby Sanchez won't play today as the Marlins initially planned, according to the Palm Beach Post. He is recovering from a bruised left knee and skipper Fredi Gonzalez said, "Probably another day or two before he sees some game action."

Our View:

The ailment is minor, and Sanchez should remain on track to be the Marlins' starting first baseman for opening day.

March 21, 2009

Gaby Sanchez is expected to return to the Marlins' lineup by the middle of next week, according to the Palm Beach Post. Sanchez is nursing a bruised left knee and he said, " It is getting a ton better every day."

Our View:

Sanchez should be back in time to nail down the starting gig at first base. He wouldn't offer much speed or power though, and should be left for NL-only leagues.

March 20, 2009

Gaby Sanchez's MRI revealed that he is only dealing with a lower-leg contusion, according to the Miami Herald. Sanchez said, "I tried walking it off, but as soon as I did, it started to feel really tense. The test came back negative, though, which is the good thing, and the doctor said it is basically like a bone bruise."

Our View:

Sanchez will likely miss the next two games, but could return to the diamond after that. He has been competing for the starting gig at first base.

March 19, 2009

Gaby Sanchez was scratched from Thursday's game due to a lower leg contusion. He is listed as day-to-day.

Our View:

Sanchez is only hitting .200 this spring so winning the first base job might be a long shot. He could be used in a platoon with Dallas McPherson as he tends to hit lefties very well.

February 27, 2009

Gaby Sanchez went 0-for-3 with one strikeout and five runners left on base against Baltimore on Friday.

Our View:

Sanchez is expected to start at first base to open the season for Florida, although he doesn't have much pop for a typical first baseman and the Marlins do have the option of playing third baseman Jorge Cantu at first if Sanchez struggles.

January 15, 2009

Skipper Fredi Gonzalez commented on XM Radio 175 that Gaby Sanchez is the Marlins' projected starting first baseman for 2009.

Our View:

Sanchez has solid power potential, and could rank as a favorable sleeper, especially if he works his way up the batting order.
