Newsbreakers

July 29, 2009

Josh Geer has been yanked from the Padres rotation after his latest bad start on Tuesday, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:

He will replaced by reliever Edward Mujica. Geer has given up a major league leading 27 home runs this season (no small feat for pitching half of your games in the cavernous Petco Park), and has a cringe-inducing ERA of 5.96. He won't be back in the rotation any time soon.

July 27, 2009

Josh Geer gave up five runs (four earned) on four hits over four innings in Monday's 6-4 loss at Cincinnati. He had one walk and one strikeout, and was rocked for three homers.

Our View:

Geer falls to 1-7, and was not expected to fare well at launching pad Great American Ballpark. He is only an option for the deepest of fantasy leagues.

July 22, 2009

Josh Geer pitched six workmanlike innings on Wednesday, allowing just two runs on six hits, but took his six loss of the season, as the Pads couldn't get anything going against Ricky Nolasco.

Our View:

Geer has just one win in 2009, and only five quality starts. He's not a good bet if you are looking for a spot-starter.

July 18, 2009

Josh Geer struggled again on Friday in the Padres' 5-3 loss to the Rockies. Geer went four innings and allowed five runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out two.

Our View:

Geer has now gone ten straight starts without a win, and his fantasy value has never been lower. He should not be viewed as an option in any format, and he will have to put together a nice run to get any value back.

July 10, 2009

Josh Geer was roughed up for six earned runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings in Thursday's 9-3 loss at San Francisco. He had no walks and four strikeouts, and was tagged for three homers.

Our View:

Geer falls to 1-4 and his ERA climbs to 5.79. He is winless over his last nine outings, and is not fit for fantasy duty.

July 4, 2009

Josh Geer kept the Padres in the game with six gutty innings on Saturday, but took a no-decision as the Padres beat Los Angeles 7-4.

Our View:

He isn't anything more than a spot-starter in most fantasy formats, however.

June 29, 2009

Josh Geer was tagged for three earned runs on seven hits over seven innings in Monday's 3-1 loss to the Astros at Petco Park. He had no walks and two strikeouts.

Our View:

Geer falls to 1-3, and has not won since May 23. He has given up three or more earned runs in each of his last five outings, and is only worth consideration for deeper NL-only leagues for his next start.

June 25, 2009

Josh Geer surrendered three earned runs on eight hits over six innings in Wednesday's 4-3 loss at Seattle. He had three walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:

Geer is winless over his last five starts, and has given up three or more earned runs in each of his last four. He is only worth using in deeper NL-only leagues for his next turn in the Padres' rotation.

June 18, 2009

Josh Geer rebounded after a poor outing his last time out, and held the Mariners to three runs in six innings while striking out six and walking none. The Padres won 4-3 in ten innings.

Our View:

Geer was good today, but could very easily be terrible his next time out. He is a start at your own risk spot starting option.

June 13, 2009

Josh Geer was lit up for seven earned runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings in Saturday's 9-1 loss at the Angels. He had one walk and five strikeouts, and gave up four homers.

Our View:

Geer has allowed four or more earned runs in five of his last seven starts, and is too unstable to employ outside of deeper NL-only leagues.

May 5, 2009

Josh Geer tossed a brilliant eight-inning affair on Tuesday, but did not factor in the decision as the Padres won in walk-off fashion in the tenth inning. Geer allowed just one run on five hits and two walks as the Pads doubled up the Rockies 2-1.

Our View:

Geer has only started three games this season and has looked good in two of them. He was roughed up in one and also in a relief outing, but appears to be figuring things out. Tuesday's effort dropped his ERA to a respectable 3.96.

April 19, 2009

Josh Geer looked good in his first start of the season on Sunday, giving up one earned run (two total) off six hits and zero walks while striking out four in seven innings for the no-decision against Philadelphia.

Our View:

Geer replaced Walter Silva, who was placed on the 15-day DL with a forearm strain. Geer should get at least one or two more starts to prove he belongs in San Diego's rotation. He was decent in five starts last year and could be worth a look as a spot starter in NL-only leagues.

April 19, 2009

Josh Geer will be called up by San Diego on Sunday to start against the Phillies in place of the injured Walter Silva, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View:

Silva will be placed on the DL with a forearm strain and, according to manager Bud Black, will likely remain on the DL for longer than the necessary 15 days. Thus, Geer could end up with a few chances to prove deserving of a spot in San Diego's permanent rotation, though he won't be worth paying attention to until he strings together two or three effective outings.

March 12, 2009

Josh Geer looked good against Milwaukee on Thursday, shutting out the Brewers through three innings off three hits, zero walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:

The successful outing should help the 25-year-old's confidence as he fights for a spot in San Diego's starting rotation. He wasn't too sharp in his previous two outings but should be able to fill the back of the Padres' rotation as long as he can be mostly dependable this spring, though his fantasy potential is limited without the ability to log many strikeouts.

March 7, 2009

Josh Geer was hit hard by Oakland on Saturday, giving up four runs off five hits, three of which were home runs, and one walk in just two innings.

Our View:

The start came after a decent first outing on March 2. Geer has been tabbed as the favorite to enter 2009 as San Diego's No. 5 starter, though he's far from a lock and will have to pitch better if he wants the spot.
