Newsbreakers

October 1, 2009

Chris Davis homered and drove in three runs on Thursday, helping the Rangers rout the Angels 11-3 on the road.

Our View:

Davis is wrapping up an immensely disappointing season that has seen him bat just .232 in 109 games while striking out an incredible 148 times. His 21 home runs and 57 RBI are indicative of his prodigious power, but he'll never be a viable major league hitter if he can't vastly improve his plate discipline.

September 30, 2009

Chris Davis was held out of the Rangers' lineup on Tuesday with a strained hamstring, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Davis injured the hammy stretching for a ball at first base on Monday.

Our View:

Davis is hoping that he will only miss a game or two, so this doesn't appear to be serious. He has been better since being recalled from Triple-A, but he has a long way to go before he lives up to his potential as a top-flight fantasy power threat.

September 18, 2009

Chris Davis went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles in tonight's 2-0 loss to the Angels at Rangers Ballpark.

Our View:

The Rangers had eight hits in the shutout loss, all singles. Davis was in need of a solid performance, as he was 1-for-13 over his previous four games.

September 8, 2009

Chris Davis carried the Rangers in Tuesday's 10-5 win at Cleveland in the second game of their doubleheader, as he went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. He hit two singles and a three-run homer off Jose Veras.

Our View:

Davis launched his 18th homer, surpassing his season output of his rookie campaign in 2008. He looks to be a solid source for power down the stretch.

August 25, 2009

Chris Davis has been recalled by the Rangers from Triple-A Oklahoma City, according to MLBblogs.com. Andruw Jones (torn hamstring) was placed on the 15-day DL as the adjoining move.

Our View:

Davis may continue to hit for a low batting average, but crushed 15 homers over 77 games this season, and is worth targeting for fantasy owners that could use help in the power department.

August 24, 2009

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram is reporting that the Rangers plan to recall first baseman Chris Davis from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Davis struggled for most of his time with the Rangers this season, but he has hit .335 since being demoted at the beginning of July.

Our View:

This is a very interesting case for fantasy owners. As bad as Davis was over the first three months of the season, he has been tearing up Triple-A pitching. If he has gotten it figured out at the plate, he could be a great addition to any fantasy squad. The question is, can he do it at this level? If you are willing to gamble, it might be worth taking a chance on him.

July 8, 2009

Since being demoted on Sunday, Rangers' slugger Chris Davis has gone 4-for-8 with Triple-A Oklahoma City, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He went 3-for-4 on Tuesday and finished the game a home run short of the cycle.

Our View:

Davis was bad this season with the Rangers, but if he proves he can do more at the plate than hit home runs and strike out he could return to the team sooner rather than later. If he is called up quickly, it would be a good idea to pick him up, because it would mean that the Rangers are confident he can get the job done at the major league level.

July 5, 2009

Chris Davis has been optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City by the Rangers, according to MLBblogs.com. Josh Hamilton was activated from the DL as the adjoining move.

Our View:

Davis clubbed 15 homers over 258 at-bats, but was sent down as he struck out 114 times. Fantasy owners will have to rely on another source for power while Davis works on his hitting in the minors.

June 27, 2009

Chris Davis hit his 15th home run of the season off San Diego's Kevin Correia on Saturday.

Our View:

Not surprisingly, Davis' other two at-bats concluded in whiffs. While his power is legit, he'll continue to frustrate with the absurdly high strikeout rate.

June 26, 2009

Chris Davis went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored in Thursday's 9-8 win at Arizona. The game went 12 innings to decide a winner. He hit a double, homer and two singles.

Our View:

Davis hit his second homer of June, and has 14 for the season. He has been a solid source for power, but his dismal .209 batting average leaves a bit to be desired.

June 18, 2009

Chris Davis went 1-for-4 with a solo homer in Thursday's 5-3 loss to the Astros at Rangers Ballpark.

Our View:

Davis ended a 17-game drought without a homer, and now has 13 for the season. He struck out two more times tonight as well, and continues to lead the majors with 97.

June 16, 2009

Chris Davis has been swinging like he has a hole in his bat, but GM Jon Daniels indicated that the Rangers do not plan on demoting him as of now, according to the Dallas Morning News. Daniels said, "We challenged Chris before the last road trip -- Ron Washington sat him down the last two days against Oakland, hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo worked with him -- and he has responded. Young players can be frustrating at times, but we cannot commit to playing the kids and then bail on them when they struggle."

Our View:

Davis has been a solid source for power with 12 homers, but he holds an anemic .208 batting average and leads the majors with 92 strikeouts. He is hitting better right now though, as he is riding a four-game hitting streak and holds a .270 average in June.

June 12, 2009

Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com is reporting that Rangers first baseman Chris Davis is on pace to strike out 239 times in 2009, which would break the record of 204 set by Mark Reynolds in 2008.

Our View:

Even in the age of the strikeout, that is an astounding number. Odds are that if Davis stays on this pace, he won't be getting much playing time in the second half of the season, and not because the Rangers don't want him to set that dubious record. He is also batting just .205 on the season.

June 9, 2009

Chris Davis went 1-for-2 with a single in Tuesday's 9-0 loss to the Jays at Rangers Ballpark.

Our View:

The Rangers only mustered two hits in the loss. Davis snapped a three-game skid without a hit, and has now gone 12 straight games without a homer.

May 30, 2009

Chris Davis will ride the pine for tonight's home game against the Athletics, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View:

Davis launched 12 homers, but holds a poor .194 batting average. He is getting a mental day off after striking out six times during Friday's doubleheader. Hank Blalock will cover first base in his place.

May 27, 2009

Chris Davis launched two home runs on Tuesday as the Rangers beat the Yankees 7-3. Davis went 2-for-4 on the game with the two bombs, two runs scored, and two RBI.

Our View:

Davis has been about what we expected so far this season. His average should improve from .208, but don't expect him to ever hit for much average. He is a home run hitter, and he has hit his share of homers this season. His power makes him an option in all leagues at this point, and he should continue to improve.

May 14, 2009

Chris Davis went 2-for-4 with two RBI in Thursday's 3-2 win over the Mariners at Rangers Ballpark. He hit a single and a two-run homer.

Our View:

Davis has been a solid source for power so far this season as he crushed his 10th homer over 33 games. He has three homers over his last four games.

May 12, 2009

Chris Davis was 2-for-4 with a home run in Texas' 7-1 win over the Mariners on Tuesday.

Our View:

Davis has had a disappointing fantasy season thus far, but is starting to turn it around. He has struck out 50 times in '09, but has also whacked nine homers and three of those have come in his last five games. He'll need to get the average up though if he wants to make a big impact. At .231 he's not impressing anyone.

May 7, 2009

Chris Davis went 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored as the Rangers fell to the A's 9-4 on Thursday. He also struck out for the 44th time this season.

Our View:

Davis continues to lead the league in whiffs, but he has shown some of the power that made many expect good things from him this season. He has seven home runs in 95 at bats.

April 26, 2009

Chris Davis continues to gain momentum as he homered again on Sunday. Davis now has five long balls on the year, and after a miserable start his numbers are starting to look decent.

Our View:

Davis is still hitting barely over .200 at .213 but he has gone deep five times. His average won't be this low all year, but don't expect him to hit .300 either. The power is starting to show, a good sign for Davis owners.

April 25, 2009

Chris Davis connected for his fourth home run of the season in a 6-5 Texas win over Baltimore on Saturday.

Our View:

After a terrible first couple of weeks, Davis has hits in nine of his last 10 games. He has also crushed four home runs and collected seven RBI in that stretch.

April 13, 2009

Chris Davis broke out of a 1-for-22 slump on Monday by going 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored in the Rangers 10-9 loss to the Orioles.

Our View:

Davis was not supposed to start tonight but Hank Blalock's stiff neck opened the door for the slugger. Hopefully this is the performance he needed to get his timing down and he can go forward as a solid fantasy contributor.

April 13, 2009

Updating a previous report, Chris Davis will start at first base in Monday night's game, according to MLB.com. He was going to get the night off, but Hank Blalock's neck was to stiff to man the position.

Our View:

Davis' timing has been off all season as he has just one hit in 22 at-bats compared to 10 strikeouts.

April 13, 2009

The Dallas Morning News reports that Chris Davis will not start on Monday. Hank Blalock will play first base and Andruw Jones will DH.

Our View:

There are a lot of factors building against Davis aside from the fact that he has just one hit against 10 strike outs through his first six games. He does not play good defense, cannot hit lefties, and is a strikeout machine. With the Rangers loaded with outfielders, the team would likely trot out a more powerful offense with Blalock at first and one of their extra outfielders manning the DH role.

April 12, 2009

Chris Davis is 1-for-18 so far this season, and leads the AL with nine strikeouts, according to the Dallas Morning News. His lone knock was a single.

Our View:

Davis is in today's lineup at first base against the Tigers, and hopefully he will benefit from playing at hitter-friendly Comerica Park.

April 11, 2009

Chris Davis' early-season funk continued Saturday, as he was 0-for-3 with three strikeouts in the loss to Detroit. He did draw a walk.

Our View:

Davis is now just 1-for-18 with nine punchouts thus far. There is real power potential here, but Davis is looking like a fantasy bust thus far.

April 1, 2009

The Dallas Morning News reports that Chris Davis does not feel that his sore knee is an issue, and he will be ready for opening day. He has apparently dealt with patella tendinitis since the end of last season.

Our View:

Davis is hitting .310 through 71 spring at-bats and the Rangers are banking on him to repeat his .285/.331/.549 rates from last season. Should he manage that over 150 games or so, he would be an incredibly valuable corner infielder.

March 27, 2009

Chris Davis was 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored on Friday.

Our View:

Davis is showing some pop this spring and is expected to put up solid fantasy numbers across the board this year. He's a good middle round pick and could bust out with a 30 homer 100 RBI campaign based on his half season last year.

March 25, 2009

Chris Davis had two hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs for the Rangers in their 8-5 win on Wednesday.

Our View:

Davis is the man at first and most are expecting him to put up solid numbers in not only AL-only formats but mixed leagues as well.

January 16, 2009

With Michael Young agreeing to play third base, Chris Davis can settle in at first base, for now. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram recalls that prospect Justin Smoak is a fast-rising first baseman who is known for his slick glove, as well as his bat. Smoak, a 2008 first-round pick, could make it to Texas by 2010.

Our View:

The Rangers can worry about any Smoak-Davis conflicts down the road. By the time Smoak is ready, the Rangers might have openings back at third base or DH, and we're not too worried about Davis's future. If he slugs as well as expected, his fantasy position won't matter very much.
