Newsbreakers

July 8, 2009

According to MLB.com, Royals' shortstop Mike Aviles underwent successful Tommy John surgery on Wednesday.

Our View:

Aviles will miss the entire 2009 season and the injury will likely keep him out of part of the 2010 season as well. Don't make any fantasy plans for him for a very long time.

July 1, 2009

According to the Kansas City Star, Mike Aviles will undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

Our View:

Aviles looks to be out for nine to 12 months, so don't count him into your fantasy plans until around this time next year. He originally felt pain in his elbow and forearm in spring training, but battled through it until May 23rd when he landed on the DL. That may not have been the best decision though as he hit just .183 while in the lineup this season.

June 22, 2009

Mike Aviles is "nowhere close" to returning from his strained right forearm, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View:

Not that it would matter much anyway. After hitting .325 a season ago, Aviles was hitting just .183 before being shut down on June 3. One of the major fantasy busts of the season, he shouldn't be considered for an add whenever he does come back.

June 4, 2009

Mike Aviles has been shut down for two weeks due to his strained right forearm, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Inflammation is causing the discomfort in his forearm. Aviles will be re-evaluated in two weeks.

June 2, 2009

Mike Aviles met with Dr. Lewis Yocum today to get a second opinion on his strained right forearm, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View:

Skipper Trey Hillman noted that Aviles has not progressed much in his recovery. We will keep you posted when the results of his second opinion are disclosed.
